Here's Reagan's speech on the 40th anniversary. It is a masterpiece.

On this day I am always reminded of my crusty and colorful friend Henry Martin who landed on Juno Beach with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. I recall him tellling of the bullets whizzing overhead as they neared the beach and so he scanned the landing craft and found the biggest guy in the boat. As soon as the doors swung open he tucked in right behind the big guy and screamed at him "RUN RUN RUN" as they ran all the way to the seawall. They made it unscathed through that day and got drunk later that night when they found some wine in an empty house. He was eventually severely wounded in the battle to close the Falaise Gap which he would never talk much about as it was so horrible. A true hero.

This iconic photo always gives me the chills. Most of the soldiers who clambered off these landing craft and into the water and smoke were around 20 years old.
