I'll be seriously disappointed if we only score in the 40's. With their OL and starting 2 freshmen...our defense should get us 14-28 points alone (returns or short fields of 30 yards or less). That means if we only get in the 40's, then our offense only scored 12 points or so...That would be heartbreaking.

Heartbreaking is probably an overstatement. Baylor and TCU score in the 70s vs FCS teams. Utah really isn't built that way. If we win easy, we've done what we wanted to do. If we win a close one, we are still alright. If we lose, that's heartbreaking.

    Yeah, it is an overstatement.

But, if we only score 12 points directly from our offense going more than 30 yards and scoring, would that worry you? Shouldn't our run game, especially McCormick and our OL, be able to rip off some long runs?

Yes, I want more than 12 points from the offense. There were some assumptions in your first post about how many points we would score on defense and special teams. I'm not worried if we don't score any points off defense and special teams. I see those points as random occurrences that can't be counted on.

SoCal pointed out a few weeks ago that we need more TDs off of big plays to catch up to our peers. I think big plays are a big deal in college football, and I want to see more of them. But even that is an area highly influenced by luck.

The big plays are huge. I think big plays are less lucky on this level because the competition is worse. Even USC only has a handful of NFL guys on their defense. The rest are there for girls and parties. Big plays were to be had last year. Defenses were zoned in on our run game. We just never went after them. Whether that was Wilson or Arod, we will find out tonight.

    Great. Thanks Sully.

And this was probably in the brochure we had to fill out, but how exactly is the score calculated? I ask because I was behind "70-0" Utah. I assume he got some bonus for correctly predicting that zero.

100 points possible each game. You get 34 points for picking the winning team (all or nothing). 33 points for picking Utah's score correctly (sliding scale). 33 points for picking opponent's score correctly (sliding scale) Basically minus 2 points for each point you are off the correct score.

So let's use Utah's predication as an example: He got 34 points for picking the correct winning team. He also got 33 points for picking SUU score correctly. He predicted 70 points for Utah's score, which was 46 points off from the correct score. 46 x 2 = 92. 33 points possible minus 92 = 0 (we don't do negatives). So he got zero points for his prediction of Utah's final score. So his total points are 34+33+0=67.

I am always willing to tweak the calculation if enough people want it different.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

    Thanks.

So a prediction of 1000-0 would have tied Utah's? Actually, I think Utah initially predicted 1000-0 (jk, Utah, we love your wide eyed optimsim).

lol. Heck ya. I was shocked to see myself so high as well.

And for the record, as long as I sit so high on the rankings list, I like the calculations. If I slip...well, then...

Strangely enough, kinda was my thinking, particularly seeing some of the super high predictions. It was a half joke that Whittingham would go up 7-0 and then shut things down on offense and let defense win the game the reset of the night causing Ute fans to lose their minds and BYU to find out nothing about us. Sadly, after that game it doesn't seem so crazy does it?

Utah Is one of the few teams who can make 24-0 feel like an utterly overwhelming domination. Which it was.
