    Season Efficiency 2016-2017

    Welcome to the new season.
Nothing new this year unless you have any suggestions.
I'll try to keep the opponents efficiency top 25 performances vs Utah updated once a week.
I'm also going to only post efficiency scores of those who played, makes things more efficient

If you have anything you'd like me to track that isn't found on ESPN or whatever, just ask.
The score +/- per player is tough for me to track since I don't have that but I can extract whatever numbers we need.

    Got it?
    Let's go.

Yawn game #3. Utes shot the best game of the season from 3 at 42.9% 12/28.
They also had season highs in assists (22) and steals (9) but they also had a season high in fouls (22)
+96 efficiency was a high for the season but it came against a very tired Coppin St team.

The first real test of the season and I give them a C+. Utah won the battle at the free throw line and that's the only thing that kept them in this game.
Utah was +11 free throws made and +35.2% from the charity stripe. Everything else belonged to Butler. Their defense is really good.

The good. Free throws. Utah shot a season high 81.8% from the free throw line 18/22. Utah also had the 2nd most steals in a game (7) vs a really good passing team.
The Utes did a fair job on the boards even though this was the first time they've been outrebounded. They actually had +1 offensive rebounds over Butler.
The Utes were +6 in possessions but scored a season low for possessions at 70, with that said they allowed a season low 64 possessions.
The Utes scores a season high 20.3% of possessions resulted in a turnover. Also Butler didn't score a single block, Utah was +3

The bad. Utah shot terribly from the field. 36.5% was a season low 19/52 (both season lows). 15% from deep 3/20...all season lows.
Utah had a season low in possessions (70), turnovers per possession 25.6% of possessions, 39.1% of all possessions resulted in a score (first time they dropped below 45% all season)
Utah only had 7.7% of all shots scoring an assist and only had 4 assists which is -11 off their average.

You'll noticed I added Butler's efficiency scores, I like that and I think I'll keep doing that.

For the second straight game Utah gave up over 20% of assist to shot percentage, but Utah was a season 2nd high at 31.8% of all shots were assisted on.
    * - FYI Utah was only 7.7% of assists to shot attempts vs Butler.
Utah had almost a season high for possessions at 81.
Utah tied a season high of 23 free throws made and was 76.7% 23/30 (3rd highest)
Utah only allowed 31 rebounds which was a season low for an opponent but they gave up a season high from three of 52.2% 12/23, also season highs.
Utah attempted only 19 threes, a season low but attempted 66 shots which was +14 more than Butler game.
This was the third time Utah scored over 90 and comes off the season low of 59 vs Butler.
Utah got 44.1% of all offensive rebound opportunities which is 2nd best for the season. Meaning there were 34 offensive rebound opportunities and Utah got 15 of them.
On the defensive boards Utah got 75% of those, 4th highest on the season. Out of 40 defensive rebounding opportunities Utah got 30 of them.
Utah allowed a season low opportunites for defensive boards at 55.9% for Montana State. Meaning they had 34 opportunities they only got 19 of them.
    * -FYI those numbers won't add up because of the addition of team rebounds.

For the season Utah has had more blocks than their opponents in every game and has fouled less than their opponent in every game.

    Bring on UVU

  8. #8

    Utah 93 UVU 93 (Utah 87-80)

I think that's the first tie I've ever seen on efficiency team scores.

    PLAYER PER +/- PLAYER PER
    Tyler Rawson 19 +0.1 Isaac Neilson 36
    Lorenzo Bonam 18 -1.7 Jordan Poydras 22

    Devon Daniels 7 -8.7 Kenneth Ogbe 3
    Gabe Bealer 2 -2.6 Jared Stutzman 3
    Joonas Tahvanainen 1
    Ivory Young -4

*-editing note, I'm going to use the abbreviation for Utah Opponent as UO from now on. It just gets wording using all those letters and stuff.

Not only did Isaac Neilson shatter the opponents PER score with 36 but Poydras is now ranked 2nd for a Utah opponent this season
On the flip side, the 19 from Rawson was the 13th best performance for a Ute this season. FYI Kuzma has the season high with 37 vs NW Nazarene.

The good. Utah shot a season high 45.5% from deep 10/22. They also had their second best turnover performance with only 15% of all possessions ending in a TO.
Utah also shot over 50% from the field for the third time all season. Defensively Utah didn't have a great game and should be happy to escape with a win. This isn't your Dad's JC, this is UVU division I basketball. They are pushing to be a top 3 basketball program in the state. I think after beating BYU and this game, they have a valid argument.

The bad. UVU assisted on 29.2% of all their shot attempts. Meaning they got an assist for 1/3 shots, not shots made but shots. UVU made 32 shots (season high for UO). UVU had 19 assists (season high for UO) 4 blocks tied a season high for UO. UVU made a 2pt basket on 33.7% of all their possessions (2nd only to Butler at 35.9% ). Utah only had 8 offensive rebounds, season low. Utah tied a season low with steals at 2. Utah was -5 in the assist category. Utah scored a season low for offensive rebounding opportunities getting only 26.7% (averaging 36% ). This equates to an 83.3% of defensive rebounding opportunities gathered by UVU, second to NWNaz 87.1%. For only the second game all season (Butler) Utah had a lower basket rate per possession than their opponent on 2 point baskets, unlike Butler though Utah was +4.2% better on 3pt possessions which was the difference in the game.

Utah is 6-1 but this could've easily been a loss with a few bad bounces and smarter play from UVU. The Utes won't be so lucky if they play like that vs Xavier.

Utes only went 8 deep again. I think they did a better job than expected and it was nice to see them not quit.
Several bounces go there way and this game is in there hands. Daniels played great and put up his 4th 20 PER performance of the season.

The good. Xavier only had 3 steals, Utah did a much better job controlling the ball and only suffered 13 turnovers, 3rd lowest for the season.
Utah also shot 51.9% for the gams (2nd highest for season) and had 35% of all possessions end in a 2pt bucket. Shooting so well help Xavier to only 20 defensive rebounds, and they're one of the better rebounding teams. This game was a season low for possession for a UO, Xavier only had 63. Average is 72.6, but that also means Utah had a season low of 66, averaging 74.9. That's it.

The bad. There were plenty to cover. Season low in blocks (2), possessions (66), FT% 66.7%/attempts and makes 8/12, three point attempts (19), rebounds (25) and offensive rebounds (7). They also gave up a season high to UO in offensive rebounds (13), forced turnovers (8) and scores per possessions 54.2%. They said several times that Utah hadn't been out rebounded, well if you account for team rebounds Utah has been outrebounded -4 to Butler, -3 to UVU an -8 vs Xavier. This was the first game Utah had more fouls +4 over a UO. Utah only gathered 58.1% (meaning Xavier missed 31 shots and Utah only collected 18 rebounds) of all defensive rebounding opportunities, averaging 75.4%, this also equated to a season high of UO offensive rebounding opportunities 41.9%. Utah allowing 25.9%

Had this game as a 12 point loss 80-68 so I'll take a 77-69 beat the spread win.

Up next...Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University of Prairie View Texas Panthers.

This game was all about Collette and Barefield. Both put up 13 PER and did not disappoint. The big downside was Collete and 3 fouls and Barefield with 5 turnovers.
Barefield quickly established himself as Utah's three point threat and now leads the team at 62.5% (this after airballing his first attempt). I know it was Prairie View but Barefield is now the 2nd rated player on the team (Kuzma). Collette is 5th.

The Good. Utah only allowed 25 rebounds (average is 32.0). PVAM went 2/19 from deep for 10.5% (2nd low). Utah had a season high 40.7% assists to shot ratio. 22 assists on 54 shots. They also shot a season high 35 free throws. Something I brought up last year was efficiency per possession. If Utah averages +1 efficiency or higher per possession they usually win. Last night was 120 efficiency to 75 possessions for +1.61 eff/poss. Versus Butler they were -0.56 difference and versus Xavier -0.31. UVU they were +0.01. Versus PVAM they were +0.86. Utah scored on 56.2% of their possessions (2nd highest). Utah rebounded 94.9% of all defensive rebounding opportunities and 45.5% of all offensive rebounding opportunities (both 2nd highest on season).

The bad. Versus a weak team Utah appeared to get lazy in the second half. Probably why Daniels got benched. The announcers made it a point of emphasis to say every player is fighting for jobs. This team now has 10 guys averaging over 10 minutes a game. I expect Bealer and Johnson minutes to drop in lieu of Collette and Barefield to bring that number to 8 (although everybodies time will drop those two will become non-existent). Utah only forced 6 turnovers, season low, and were -8 on turnovers. This also lead to being -5 in steals. Utah also was blocked 4 times (4th time this season). Utah only shot 60.0% from the line 21/35 (season high for attempts). Kuzma 8/12, Collette 1/4 (and they weren't even close), everybody else went 1/2, Daniels being the only bright spot at 4/4.

Off to Hawai'i for the Diamondhead Classic (Illinois St and San Diego St are my expected opponents)

You can see Barefield already ranks 1st in 9 categories, obviously this will go down as the season gets tougher. This is a great overall gauge of the best players on the team.

Scary to think about this game without Barefield and Collette. Kuzma had his worst performance of his career...obviously.
Shooting 57.1% from three you can beat pretty much anybody.

The good. San Francisco didn't record one single block. The other game that happened...was Butler. The Dons had 23 turnovers (almost double what Utah has been getting) and 26 fouls +5 over average. Utah had 10 steals, they shot 80.8% from the line (2nd highest for season), 83 possessions was a season high and Utah shot 41.2% 7/17 from deep which was the 4th highest of the season. Plus, not in the score book, Utat didn't give up. When San Francisco was shooting lights out and got up 15 or whatever Utah just keep playing and came back.

The bad. I thought San Francisco would drop below 50% for the game but 16/28 is unreal. Both way over what Utah has been allowing. 7.3/20.6 is what Utah has been allowing. 89 points was a season high allowed. Only one other game did a UO shoot over 50% (Butler) from the field 52.5% from the field and 57.1% from deep. That's the 5th time this year a teams has shot better from three than from two but the first time it's been over 50% on both, close in the Xavier game. 19.1% of all San Francisco possessions resulted in a three, that's insane. Most games are around 6%-9%. If it wasn't for the 27.5% of possessions in turnovers SF would've won by 20. Utah had 21 turnovers (season high), 25 rebounds (season low). I know they don't really correlate but Utah has been +28 per game of rebounds to turnovers, they were +4 in this game. 5 offensive rebounds was a season low, that equated to a season low 19.2% of offensive rebounds were had, averaging 34.6%. Utah was also low on defensive rebounding opportunities. 71.4% of all defensive rebounding opportunities were had, average is 77.1%. Utah gave up a season high of defensive rebounds at 88.5% of all Utah shots were rebounded by San Francisco, average is 74.7%. Utah has been outrebounded 4 times (3 losses).

Well, the good news is Illinois State might have destroyed Utah. Bring on the Rainbows.

Terribly inefficient game on both sides. 38.2% shooting combined 39/102, only Coppin St game was worse 44/117 37.6%

The bad. Utah did a much better job across the board but Hawaii did shoot 80% from the line, 16/20 season high for UO. Barefield fouled out, Collette with 4 fouls and Utah has 21 fouls overall (22 Coppin St). The 51 shot attempts was a season low, 14 3pt attempts was a season low. The pace of this game was very slow. 139 possessions overall was the second lowest (Butler), 118 points was tied for lowest (Nazarene). 102 shot attempts was the season low. Utah again suffered on the offensive boards, only gathered 22.2% (second to San Francisco). Utah was averaging 11 offensive rebounds, they have 11 in the last two games combined.

The good. Utah hasn't been blocked in the past two games. Utah only gave up 2 steals and 5 offensive rebounds to Hawaii. Utah recorded 7 blocks (2nd highest Concordia). Utah was +9.8% on assists to shots. Defensive rebounds Utah gathered 86.1% of all opportunities (3rd highest of season). Gabe Bealer had a great game which was nice to see. 3/5 from field, 1 rebound, 1 steal for his 2nd best game of the season (Nazarene). David Collete scored his best game of the year...out of 3. 7/11 shots, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks but 5 turnovers. Would've broken 20 PER with better control of the ball.

Utah needed this game. Early start, easy game to lose. Gritty game with a couple of role players stepping up.
Barefield was held in check for the second straight game.

The good. Utah shot 58.5% from the field, (2nd highest) 24/41 and assisted on 41.5% of all shot attempts (season high) 17 assists on 41 attempts. Utah tied their 2nd highest amount of steals with 9. Defensively they held SFA to only 43 shot attempts, 10 attempts from deep, 23 turnovers, 15 defensive rebounds and 33.6% of possessions resulting in turnovers...all season highs or lows for UO. The teams combined for 53.6% from the field 45/84 a season high for Utah game and the 3rd time they've combined for over 50% shooting. Combined 48 personal fouls was 2nd for season, (blame it on the early start). Collette scored his season high PER for the fourth straight game. 13 vs Prairie view, 17 vs USF, 18 vs Hawai'i and 21 vs SFA (14th best performance for a Ute this season). Utah finally gave up a block. There was a 4 game stretch where Utah was getting blocked 4 times a game. The last three games they've given up 1.

The bad. Free throw defense. I know that sounds silly but this was the second straight game UO shot great from the line. 35-44 the past two games. A lot of this has to do with playing better opponents but a lot has to do with more opportunities. Utah was averaging 14 fouls per game, the last two game they've averaged 21.5. Utah had a season high 26.4% of all possessions ending up in a turnover. They also had a season low for offensive rebounds (4) but that had a lot to do with shooting 58.5%. Utah gave up a lot of boards for the opportunities allowed. SFA picked up an offensive rebound 40.9% of their shots (2nd highest for UO, Xavier 41.9% ). Utah also gave up 88.2% of all defensive rebounds (averaging 75.8% allowed) only San Francisco rebounded better for UO. With that said this game had the least rebounds (43) and shot attempts (84) averaging 68.5 rebounds and 117.6 shot attempts. This game saw 10 less possesions for an average Utah game.

The way to read this is as follows. In wins Utah averages +9.1 field goals made but in losses they are -3.3 field goals.

The numbers that really stand out are three point defense, assists and rebounds.

Guard the three, rebound and pass the ball. If Utah can do that, easier said than done, then they typically will win the game.

    Turnovers....turnovers...turnovers.

The good: For the first time since Prairie View, Utah was over 1:1 ratio of assists to turnovers. I use just the player stats so the team turnovers don't come into play with my numbers. For only the second time did Utah get over 2:1 ratio of assist to turnover margin. 8 turnovers to 18 assists. The official numbers are 10 turnovers (2 team turnovers). 11.8% of all Utah possessions resulted in a turnover (only Concordia game was better). Combined teams only hd 30 fouls (3rd lowest for Utah game) and 21 free throw attempts (tied season low - Condordia). For the 4th straight game Utah did a poor job on the offensive boards. Only 20.7% of all opportunites were had. Utah averages 32% but a lot of that is due to better competition over (Riverside, Montana St, Prairie View and Coppin St). Utah was -7 in turnovers (season high). Utah has really slowed down their offense, averaging 75.7 before the Hawaii game and only 68.7 in the past 3 games. Utah only allowed 1 block again. 2 in the past 4 games.

The bad: Colorado only committed 16 fouls, 4th time a UO was less than 20 (Concordia, Riverside, Xavier). Utah was only 60% from the line 6/10 all three season lows. Offensive rebounding. Some of this has to do with Utah shooting better. Utah was shooting 49.6% before the Hawaii trip and 11 offensive rebounds. Last 4 games they've shot 52.4% and offensive boards have dropped to 5.3 per game. I'll take that. This was the third straight game the total possessions was under 140, Utah game average is 146.5. Overall it was a great game controlled by the turnover margin. In Utah wins Utah is +0.4 in turnovers, in Utah losses Utah is +2.7. When their losses are at an average of 6.7 points and a turnover margin right around 3 it's easy to see cut down the turnovers and you get the win.

    Next up, Arizona trip.

Without taking too much away from Devon, it was clear Arizona was going to let Devon Daniels score and shut down Bonam, Barefield and Kuzma. It should be noted that Devon has 6 of the top 25 performances of the year. He led the Utes in both Xavier and Arizona games at PER.

I think Utah has solved their turnover issues...now they're struggling on the boards.

The bad...Utah allowed 38 rebounds, 30 defensive boards and only managed 4 offensive boards. Yes a lot of that had to do with Arizona doing a great job on the boards but Utah only picked up 12.1% of all offensive rebounding opportunitied. They actually did an average job on the defensive boards, getting 71.4% (average is 76.6% ). This game was won on second chance points from Arizona and the lack of Utah getting fouls called. Only 8 fouls were called on Arizona resulting in only 4 free throw attempts for Utah....4. Utah was 2/4 50% season low on all three. The 56 points was also a season low and only the fourth gime Utah scored less than 70, 1-3 in those games. The 63 possessions was also a season low (average 73.3). Arizona was 14/17 from the line 82.4% (season high for UO). Utah was 0.87 efficiency per possession, remember the magic number is 1. Utah is 10-0 when they score over 1 efficiency per possession, they are 0-4 when they are at 1 or lower. Utah was -14 on the boards (season low), +9 on fouls (season high), -32.4% on FT%, -10 defensive boards (season low), -25 PER (2nd lowest - Butler).

The good....Not a lot but there was some good. First off, Devon Daniels. 6/11 - 7 rebounds - 5 assists - only 1 turnover. Arizona only forced 3 turnovers (Utah has been giving up 6.1) that equated to only 7 turnovers and 15 in Pac12 play. Utah was averaging over 15 turnovers a game, huge improvement. This relayed to only 11.1% of all possessions as a TO. Utah was +6 on shot attempts but was -3.1% worse on overall shooting. +7 on attempts from deep. Interesting that Utah has committed 17 fouls in 3 of their losses (Butler, SF and AZ) and they average 21 fouls in their wins. This could mean two things, when Utah plays more aggressive they have better defense and wins. Or they are playing better teams in losses that get cleaner shots off and better offense. Also, in wins Utah is averaging 74 possessions but in losses it's only 70. Speed up the game and play more aggressive defense.

Next up...Part 2 of the Arizona trip...I feel a Utah road win coming.

Welcome back Kuz! Nice to see Daniels and Zamora getting in a grove. Where have you gone Rawson and Barefield. Thanks for playing VanDyke, Johnson and Bealer. Enjoy the show Jokl and Connor.
Justice 19 was the 9th best performance vs Utah this year and Oleka's 18 was tied for 10th (Markkanen). Kuzma now has the top 4 performances of the year, his 33 was the second best of the season (37 vs Nazarene).

The bad....ASU recorded 4 blocks, 5th time this year Utah has allowed 4 blocks...Utah is 5-0 in those games. This was the 4th time Utah has allowed 80+ points (3-1 in those games) and the 32 shots made tied a season high for UO. Utah was -11 on attempts from deep (27 attempts from ASU, 16 for Utah). Utah has shot 60% from the line in 3 of their wins. Averaging 68.9% from the line in wins, 76.6% in losses...can't explain that one. Turnovers bumped back up again to 15 but Utah recorded 20 assists for the first time since Prairie View so not a huge deal. Not much else was really bad about this game.

The good...50% from deep. 8/16. First time Utah shot 50% all year from deep. They also recorded 20 assists (averaging 15.4) and had 32.3% of all shots recorded an assist. ASU only had 5 offensive board (tied season high Hawai'i). The 78 possessions for Utah was the most since San Francisco (averaging 73.6 possessions but only 67 over the past 4 games). Utah recorded 80% of all defensive rebounding opportunities (average is 76.8% ). The +4 on offensive boards was the first positive on offensive boards since Prairie View. 9 for Utah 5 for ASU. The teams combined for 66 made shots (season high for Utah game - averaging 52.9) and the 51.2% shooting was the third best combined shooting performance of the season (SFA and USF shot better). The teams combined for 191 efficiency, second highest on the year (195 Montana St).

Overall, great game especially after getting down in the first half. Kuzma hit some big shots and Collette played another solid game. Collette has played 7 games and his PER in order has been 13, 17, 18, 21, 21, 16, 19.

Huge home stretch this week vs UCLA and USC. If the Utes can control the turnovers and collect the defensive boards they have a shot to win both games. Kuzma needs to lead this team.

Give it up to Reininger, new career high efficiency and minutes (16). Collette still reached double PER and has so in every game this season.
Daniels has been on a tear lately, 19,20,20 in the last 3 games. USC was the 7th game he reached 20 PER...remember, he's only a freshman averaging 14.3 PER.

The bad...USC shot 26 free throws and pulled down 14 offensive board (season high for UO). Utah only had 2 block (5th time this season) and Utah's assist/shot ratio was barely 17.2% (lowest for a Utah win), been averaging 25.9% on the season. Utah was right at 1.00 for assist to turnover 10/10, averaging 15.1 assists and 13.8 turnovers. Utah had 68 possessions which was a little under their average of 73.2. Utah only pulled 63.2% of all defensive rebounding opportunities, averaging 75.9%. That's an obvious correlation to the high amount of offensive boards USC got. The 10 assists for Utah was a season low for a Utah win and so was the 68 possessions. Utah is 2-3 in games where they only get 2 blocks, this game being the 2nd win.

The good....for the second straight game Utah shot great from deep, 9/17 52.9% from three (season high percentage). Utah scored on 56.1% of all possessions, barely behind Prairie View and Concordia, that's how well Utah scored. Even though USC shot 26 free throws, they were only 53.8% from the line 14/26, second worst peformance for UO. Utah won despite giving up 14 offensive boards, this game was won through execution. Utah shot 18.5% better from the field over USC

What can I say about Lonzo Ball? The dude is a winner. Without him Utah wins this game. His 2 key steals to dunks and deep threes out of nowhere won the game for UCLA, he was everything as advertised. You know what I liked most about him? I can't remember him saying a word during the game...not a peep. Below are the top 5 performance vs Utah this year, two now belong to UCLA players.

Pac12Network noted he's only the third player in the nation to post +15 points +5 rebounds +5 assists +5 steals in a game and the first freshmen in like 38 years, not sure the actual stat. That's a special kid. Also, he was the first Utah opponent to play all 40 minutes.

The bad...I made a comment before the game that Ball isn't necessarily a great free throw shooter and Utah needs to put him to the line. He went 0/0. Utah scored 0 blocks for the first time this season. Now 2-4 when getting 2 or less blocks. Utah shot a season low from the line 3/6 50%. I thought Utah needed to keep the game under 140 possessions to win, they were at 143. Take away the 4 extra plays UCLA got off of steals and Utah wins this game by 7, that's mostly Ball. UCLA made 33 shots (season high for UO, Utah been allowing 24.1) they also put up 29 shots from 3 but only shot 31%, that kept Utah in the game. UCLA had 17 assists and had an assist on 25% of all shots, Utah allows 18.6% in this category. The 96 efficiency was a season high for UO, FYI UCLA has been averaging 110.3 efficiency as a team. 96 was a season low, UCLA had 102 in their only loss to Oregon and 113 in their win at Kentucky. Utah is the second team to hold them under 100 efficiency, Oregon State 99. The teams combined for only 57.9% from the line 11/19. UCLA scored a 2.43 assist/turnover ratio, Utah been allowing 0.89. UCLA 17 assists 7 turnovers. UCLA is just a very good team.

The good....Utah only gave up 1 block. Bryce Alford, their leading scorer only averages 15.9 PER was held to 11. Ball, who is third on the team in scoring, is averaging 23.1 PER. That's why I love the efficiency stat. Sure Alford is leading in scoring but it's obvious Ball is the best player on the team. Leaf is averaging 23.9 PER. Yes that's two players averaging over 23 PER and neither is the leading scorer. Utah only had 9 turnovers and was 2:1 on assists to turnovers 18 assists 9 turnovers, third highest of the season. Utah made 36 shots, 2nd highest (38 Concordia). Utah did score a season high of 2 point buckets per possession. 40.4% of all possessions ended in a 2 point bucket, averaging 31.7%, that's a phenomenal number. Also, Utah only gave up a turnover 12.5% of the time, averaging 18.4% of all possessions having a turnover. In fact, this was the 4th out of 5 games where Utah made great improvements in this number, ASU was 19.4%. The Hawai'i trip Utah was 24.4%, worst stretch of the season. The teams combined for many season highs for a Utah game. 69 shots made, 50 three point attempts, 35 assists, 16 turnovers (low). The combined 51.5% shooting was second only to San Francisco game at 52.6%. Something else overshadowed was Kuzma's game. Put up the 7th best performance of the season with 25 PER. That's a great performance versus one of the best teams in the NCAA.

In Utah wins Utah shoots 5.6% better from deep. In Utah losses Utah shoots -14.6% worse. Utah shoots 37.0% in wins, 26.5% in losses from three. Utah allows 31.4% in wins and a whopping 41.2% from deep in losses. In the five

Utah losses Utah has allowed 42/102 from deep for 41.2%
Utah wins Utah has allowed 75/239 from deep for 31.4%

Guard the three or find a way to make them miss. Holiday was 1/6, Hamilton was 1/7, that probably won't happen again for them.

    Bring on the Pacific Northwest
Ball did do it all including hacking Kuzma's arm intentionally to prevent a put back late in the game that may have changed the outcome. Nice no call refs.

    Utah 106 Wazzu 28 (Utah 88-47)

    PLAYER PER +/- PLAYER PER
    Kyle Kuzma 31 +11.8 Josh Hawkinson 27
    Lorenzo Bonam 23 +8.4 Malachi Flynn 9
    Gabe Bealer 15 +11.6 Ike Iroegbu 4
Parker Van Dyke 10 +5.2 Robert Franks 3
    Sedrick Barefield 10 +0.7 Conor Clifford 2
    Tyler Rawson 9 -1.6 Jeff Pollard -2
    Jace Johnson 6 -- Chrles Callison -3
    Devon Daniels 3 -10.8 Viont'e Daniels -3
    Marc Reininger 1 +0.6 Steven Shpreyregin -4
    Beau Rydalch 1 -- KJ Langston -5
    Jake Connor 0 -1.7
    Jakub Jokl -1 -3.6
    JoJo Zamora -2 -10.2

So, Kuzma had a higher efficiency rating than the entire Washington St team....yeah. 5 negative players? Never seen that. Hawkinson obviously carries that team right now, third best performance vs Utah this year BTW.

Nothing bad in this game except Washington St. The only negative I can take from this game is Utah only had 9 assists. 15.8% assist/shot was a season low for Utah in a win (Butler and Xavier games Utah was worse).

The good: Lots of good but nothing to brag about. Washington St was dreadful.

Let's look at individual numbers for guys getting a chance to play.
Reininger played 4 minutes, pulled down 1 rebound. (High 3 USC / Low Montana St -1)
Jace Johnson played well but he's eerily familiar to Chris Reyes. Plays well vs lesser talent, below average vs elite talent. Is he playing a league up? Maybe, I have hope he'll develop. (High 18 Riverside / Low -1 ASU)
JoJo Zamora 0-2 with a block and a turnover in 18 minutes. He needs to produce more when he gets the chance. He was coming off a great game at ASU 3 games ago, very inconsistent. (High 21 Coppin and Concordia / Low -3 USF)
Rawson is another guy who's disappeared in Pac12 play. A lot of that has to do with the emergence of Collette. WSU game was right in the middle for his performances (High 23 Montana St / Low 1 Xavier)
Gabe Bealer had his best game of the season. Most minutes 18, 10 pts (2nd) 7 rebounds, 1 sweet dunk, 2/4 from three. I have a fondness for Bealer, if he can be a solid bench player Utah will succeed. (High 15 WSU / Low -2 ASU)
VanDyke had his 3rd best game of the year in only 14 minutes. Somebody made a comment that PVD is amazing at catching the pass off a screen and not doing anything, that needs to stop. (High 21 Concordia / Low USC -2)
Jokl had his worst game of the year, in a blowout. Will he figure it out? He's young, I have hopes. He appears very stiff, do some yoga. (High 8 Coppin / Low -1 WSU)

Ranking all the players in every category I've come up with a Utah power depth chart. See below.
Bolded are averaging 10 min or more a game
    - FYI Kuzma leads in 8 categories - Kuzma also owns the top 5 PER for the season.
    1 Kyle Kuzma
    2 Lorenzo Bonam
    2 David Collette
    4 Devon Daniels
    4 Sedrick Barefield
    6 Tyler Rawson
    7 JoJo Zamora
    8 Jace Johnson
    9 Parker Van Dyke
    10 Gabe Bealer
    11 Jakub Jokl
    12 Beau Rydalch
    13 Marc Reininger
    13 Jake Connor

Need a win on Saturday vs the Huskies. Hopefully Collette will be good to go, going to need him.

Thrill - this is truly great work.

It would be interesting to see what the numbers look like in conference games, and what the composite numbers are, beyond ordinal ranking. My sense is Zamora has been more productive than Rawson, and maybe Barefield, but those two were much stronger earlier, and have faded lately.

    Utah 112 Washington 58 - (Utes 94-72)

    PLAYER PER +/- PLAYER PER
    Lorenzo Bonam 29 +13.6 Markelle Fultz 28

    Sedrick Barefield 10 +0.6 Matisse Thybulle 5
    Jace Johnson 7 +0.9 David Crisp 5
    Tyler Rawson 6 -4.3 Carlos Johnson 3
    Jakub Jokl 3 +0.4 Matthew Atewe 2
    Gabe Bealer 3 -0.4 Noah Dickerson 2
    JoJo Zamora 1 -6.8 Greg Bowman 0

    Beau Rydalch 0 -0.8 Dan Kingma 0
Parker Van Dyke -1 -5.5 Bitumba Baruti -1
    Quin Barnard -1

1-2-3 it was the Bonam, Daniels and Kuzma show. Even though the announcers spent 39.6 minutes talking about Fultz. Our freshman played every bit as good as Fultz...what's his name again?

    Bonam 10/12 FG - 2/2 FT - 2/2 3P - 2 reb - 6 ast - 0 stl - 1 to - 24 pts - 29 PER
    M. Fultz 10/18 FG - 6/8 FT - 4/7 3P - 7 Reb - 4 ast - 1 blk - 4 to - 30 pts - 28 PER
    Daniels 10/13 FG - 1/2 FT - 3/3 3P - 6 reb - 3 ast - 1 stl - 2 to - 24 pts - 28 PER
    Kuzma - 10/21 FG - 2/5 FT - 0/1 FT - 15 reb - 2 ast - 1 stl - 1 blk - 1 to - 22 pts - 26 PER

I don't think I've ever seen a game with 3 players over 25 PER, especially from Utah.
It appears Krystkowiak said "Let their stars get their numbers, stop the other guys. Hawkinson and Fultz had 55 PER combined, the rest of the state of Washington had 31 PER.

The bad...Utah gave up 5 blocks to an undersized team. Also Utah only forced 7 turnovers, average is 12.3. Surprisingly Utah gave up 13 offensive boards to Washington, only game worse was USC with 14. Washington picked up 31% of available offensive rebounds which is much higher than the average Utah game. Utah was -16 in three point attempts but +22.6%. The 12 three point attempts for Utah was well under their average of 19.1, probably because Washington just kept letting them make layups. Utah had 21 fouls +4 over average and the first time they had +20 fouls in Pac12 play. Utah was only 53.3% from the line, 9/16. The teams combined for only 52.5% 21/40 which was the worst of the season for a Utah game.

The good...Utah scored a 2pt bucket on 44.7% of their possessions, that's a huge number. The Utes average 32.6% with that. They also averaged a score on 60.4% of every possession, they scored 60% of the time! Typically they're right around 50%. 60% shooting was a season high 39(season high)/65 shooting. The 58.3% from three was also a season high 7/12. They only allowed 1 steal in both Washington games, that's huge since Utah was giving up 6.1 steals per game before the trip. Utah was +14 on shots made in both games in Washington, that's crazy numbers similar to Nazarene and Concordia...not common in Pac12 games. The teams combined for a season low for a Utah game with only 15 turnovers, average is 25.3.

That was a huge trip with two great blowouts. I had Utah winning both games but not like that. All this without Collette.

Huge game vs Oregon on Thursday. Need a win...it's a must win.

So I took your idea and ran a comparison of out of conference vs in Pac12 ranked by efficiency improvement. Granted Collette and Barefield only had 2 games but the point is still made. This will show who has stepped it up during Pac12 and who has faded. Kuzma, who had great OOC numbers, has actually improved. That's a nice thing to see. Interesting that Barefield is averaging more rebounds and steals but his minutes dropped by nearly 10 a game.

So the obvious takeaway from this is: Collette needs to take more 3's.

Well that's because he went from 0-0 to 1-1. Great improvement by doing that.
