    Diamond Head Classic

The Utes (7-2) are off to Hawaii for the Diamond Head classic where they will first meet San Francisco. The Dons are 7-2 out of the WCC, and actually have a game tonight before heading out to Hawaii:

    Here's the lineup of games:

Tulsa (AAC) 5-4 vs. Stephen F. Austin (Southland) 4-5 - Game is on 12/22, ESPNU at 2:30 PM, Mountain

SDSU (MWC) 5-4 vs. Southern Miss (CUSA) 3-5 - Game is on 12/22, ESPN2 at 5:00 PM, Mountain

The winners of these games will play on December 23, ESPN2 at 2:30 PM, Mountain

The losers will play on 12/23, ESPN3.

Utah (P12) 7-2 vs. San Francisco (WCC) 7-2 - Game is on 12/22, ESPNU, at 9:00 PM, Mountain

Illinois St (MVC) 6-3 vs. Hawaii (Big West) 4-5 - Game is on 12/22, ESPN2, late late late.

Winners play on December 23, ESPN 2, probably around 8:00 PM, Mountain.

    Losers play on 12/23, ESPNU

The Championship game is on Christmas Day, around 6:00 PM Mountain.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

It's not often that we're "that team" in the pre-season tourney that all of the other teams want to play and beat. I guess it's both a compliment to us and says a little about the...uh...lack of star power in this particular tourney.

I want this year's team to do well for two reasons. 1. I like to win. 2. I hope the show enough to give Larry the balls to make a real schedule for next year.

He said last week I think that they were still evaluating tournaments to go to for next year, which made me wonder if he was looking for one that would be more competitive. We should win this one going away.

I also saw that we're the only Pac-12 school that isn't signed up for a tournament yet. Seems like most of the good tournaments should be full at this point.

Sancho asked in another thread if Utah should be the favorite to win this tournament. It's too early to rely on RPI for rankings, but here is where all of the teams rank right now according to Jerry Palm:

    Team RPI Record (against D1)
    Tulsa- 187 (5-4)
    SFA- 276 (1-5)
    SDSU- 146 (4-4)
    So Miss- 341 (1-6)
    Utah- 203 (5-2)
    San Francisco- 209 (7-2)
    Illinois St- 61 (5-3)
    Hawaii- 317 (3-5)

If we think we are truly a middle-of-the-PAC team, we should be the favorites in this field. San Diego should be the top competition, but they appear to be down this year. They lost to Arizona State at home, as well as a loss at Grand Canyon State and Loyola Chicago.

Tulsa has bad losses to Jacksonville St and Arkansas Little Rock. They did manage to beat Oregon State, but that isn't saying much this year.

San Francisco has not beat anyone of note, and has losses to Eastern Washington and Portland State.

Illinois St has the highest RPI in the field. This looks to be based on a loss to #18 TCU, and beating #87 IPFW, #55 St Joseph, and #96 Tennessee Martin.

In that case, I too will be disappointed if we don't win this thing.

I wonder if Bill Russell will use this as an excuse to go to Hawaii.

(as if you have to make one up)

This basketball team will do something the football team failed to do this season. Play on ESPN.

We are a team short on talent. Rawson, PVD, and Johnson don't contribute much. We looked lost on offense and can't seem to recognize/adjust on defense.

Have they said how bad it is?

The fact that life evolved out of nearly nothing, some 10 billion years after the universe evolved out of literally nothing, is a fact so staggering that I would be mad to attempt words to do it justice.

This team's effort on defense is not up to the traditional standard.

Dons are 12-20 from 3point land. They can't keep that ridiculous pace up. But we better get it together on the offensive end as well. Colette seems to be playing with mittens on his hands.

We have been slain by the trey. And our own inability (unwillingness?) to stop it.

The scouting report on San Francisco this year is one line - Guard the three-point line. Kuzma or not our inability to focus on one thing defensively is mystifying. Hopefully it's a wake up call to the players and coaches.

That call was as bad as our defense, maybe even worse.
