Thread: Your Tournament Hopes have Died of Dysentery: Utah vs. Oregon (and OSU) II

Team really lacks leadership. Kuzma was a goof ball when he started & still has his moments.
Bonam has a low basketball IQ. Ball stops when it hits his hands & he starts dribbling. Everyone else stops too as they know he is not a passer.

Not sure why the move to start Zamora. Although his minutes were limited. Barefield is so much better--& is creative.

Team needs to build from freshmen up----hope they can bring in 1 or 2 more & not go JC route.

    NIT here we come.

I hate to make Majerus comparisons because I don't think they are really fair, but I don't recall his players ever having the lack of poise under pressure and basketball IQ issues that Larry's crews seem to have.

Yep yep yep. And as the announcer noted, taking the last timeout instead of saving it. And whover left Thompson wide open twice.

Not a single tough minded player on the team.

Which is worse - the football team losing to Cal or Oregon or the basketball team losing to a winless Oregon St.?

Football much worse because it mattered. This just confirms the trend.. we weren't going anywhere.

I thought Daniels was open on the inbounds pass. Barefield just didn't see him

Am I being too nitpicky when I ask why a freshman was inbounding the ball in that situation?

A decent high school player should be able to inbound that play, let alone a red-shirt freshman who's relatively highly recruited.

And Barefield is a sophmore anyway

I guess so, technically. Still one of our least experienced players.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

You know how facebook has your memories it shows you. Here is mine from 2014 against Arizona.

Its so frustrating watching your team fall apart in the end. Case in point. With 33 seconds left in regulation and the Utes down 1 Jordan Loveridge goes to the line with to shoot two. He of course only make 1 (80% ft shooter on the year). In overtime down 2 with 1:45 left Brandon Taylor is fouled shooting a three. He is a 89% FT shooter on the year. He misses all three free throws. Utes then get a stop and their best player and surest passer Delon Wright passes to a wide open and going to be dunking Bachinsky (who is 7 ft btw) but the ball sails 5 feet over his head.
AAAARRGGGG!!! I am surprised I didnt wake the whole house up last night.

Ouch, I remember that one well. I was there. Ugh!

Closing out close games is a problem for Larry's teams, and has been for his entire tenure at Utah. By my count we are 1-6 this season in closing out games decided by 6 points or less. I wonder what his record is overall since coming to Utah?

Is Bonham really our best option when the clock is winding down? He turns the ball over every time in those situations.

A very interesting question. In whose hands do we want the ball in crunch time? I don't really know.

He probably has some credibility built up from the game winner vs. Cal in Vegas last year. I would say that Devon Daniels is our best option for just about everything right now. Given the circumstances, I'd almost rather have Zamora bring it up because he's so fast and can either get to the hoop, and make the ref make a call (not that they likely would) or kick it to someone for a jumper.

Bonham seems totally checked out. It's sad. He can be so good, but right now he's half-assing it at best.

Bonam also made the game-winning shot vs. Colorado last year.
I like him having the ball in his hands with the game on the line.

So glad I miss d this game. Was on vacation and forgot it was occurring. Also, with this team I'm in my self-protective fair weather fan cocoon.

Lest we forget, remember we beat Duke notwithstanding a bizarre, near epic collapse at the end.

True. I'll be the "glass half-empty" guy and say that was just another instance of a near-catastrophic Ute lack of poise in crunch time, and we were simply lucky. It is an interesting long-term weakness in LK's teams, and I have no idea what causes it or how he might fix it.
