View Full Version : The Basketball Uni thread

Everyone in the football uni thread seemed bullish on me starting a basketball version. So here it is.
Post any images or links to new or interesting things related to college basketball imagery i.e. logos, uni's, floors, etc...
This thread will eventually be home to our discussion of the reveal of Utah's new brand...so look forward to that sometime in October or November.

Baylor shows off (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BT6arIlCcAAcgEk.jpg) Nike's new platinum template

St. John's is getting new uniforms (http://www.redstormsports.com/view.gal?id=145506)....why do you care? The school has officially partnered with UA. As per many of these partnerships, UA has developed a motif to represent St. John's. Their uniforms will now feature the New York skyline (well, technically AGAIN they feature the NYC skyline, but that's beside the point).

Now for those of you that followed the football thread, you may recall there was a discussion about the motif's UA has developed so far and where our topographical map fits. For me, the skyline is pretty ugly (and it awkwardly ends in the middle of the uni), but it still beats our map and Temple's feathers which I think are the absolute worst motifs...perhaps in all of college sports.

Oh well, hopefully we are getting a nice, coherent motif with our rebrand.

What could we possibly have, other than a mountain range? Please, please nothing related to red-tailed hawks.

Maybe someday when we are the RedRocks, we can have Delicate Arch?

Where did the background motif begin anyway? The first I can remember noticing was the Duke gothic chapel motif.

Based on what I'm hearing, I sense we're going to see something like the topographical map magnified to horrifying effect (at least that's the only design I know was on the table).

Nike via Duke is the progenitor of the modern age of sublimated design, lovingly called "sweatbacks" in the uni community. Some teams, like Duke, get nice, unique ones that have special significance to the school...others, like Colorado, get a standard basketball net with school logo design.

The first UA basketball uni of the season has been revealed (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BVLpDuICcAAUh4l.png). You can see that UA went easy on BC's stained glass motif...something we can only hope they do with our zubaz/mountain motif (http://i.imgur.com/SJirnub.jpg).

I sure hope we don't see anything like that practice jersey. That would rank among the worst redesigns of the past few years.

It's apparent that UA has been forced to settle for scraps in terms of apparel designers since their inception...but they have been closing in on Russell levels of ineptitude when it comes to any team that isn't Auburn.

I'm a fan of old-school jerseys, but I can't really picture the Utes' classic look. If I were in charge, I suppose I would choose the early 90s version. Big lettering, no black.

Dont get me wrong, I understand there are innate challenges to dressing up yet another red/white college team, let alone one that has never really had an iconic look, but so far UA has given us standard uniform templates (just like Nike) and over-designed garbage motifs (a topographic map and an aerial picture of the wasatch range? really?). Neither of which really connect any of our current teams to their history or locale in any meaningful manner. But you can read my rant on that in the football uni thread. The Runnin Utes reached their modern heights wearing variations on western fonts and motifs...and I think that might be the closest we came to an iconic look.

I agree, I hate our new unis. I think basketball is much harder than football to make "cool" because you are basically designing a singlet. Better to keep it simple.

I agree, I hate our new unis.

Do you mean the ones we wore last year (since there's nothing newer than those, yet)? I thought they were sharp. My only beef with last year's unis is that we wore the blackout ones too much. And I'm not one of those "Black isn't our color!" guys, I just thought our home whites and road reds looked really good last year:

840

Do you guys remember the throwback unis we wore a couple years ago? I believe they were to commemorate the '61 Final Four team. I thought they looked good (then again, compared to the Boylen-era "Runnin Utes" unis, a lot would look good). Here is an image of the throwback:

On a side note, I can't figure out how to un-attach this huge picture of Loverage in the reds. But since it's there, doesn't last year's red uni look nice, too! :)

DanielLaRusso
09-27-2013, 02:57 PM
My beefs with last year's uni's are:
1) As you said, we wore the black wayyy too much
2) All of the uni's featured a very shiny silver material for no apparent reason
3) It's a UA base template. Meaning they took the same design that a high school can pick out of a catalog and just put Utah on it. I believe Utah and USF were the only teams with that distinct honor from UA

But they were otherwise inoffensive.

Sidenote: here's the new mountain motif on black shirts (https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/561394_10151917597360960_1080593417_n.jpg)

Creighton has a new logo (http://www.gocreighton.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209279461&DB_OEM_ID=1000) that I think is actually pretty swell.

Va Tech tries yet another motif (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/906130_584494708263931_1897432950_o.jpg). Even though you can't see it, that back of the uniform is decorated with Hokie stone.

Nike really painted themselves in a corner here. One the one hand, they want to put sublimated designs on the back of their bball unis, on the other hand they want to put pinstripes on an Orlando-area team. Anyone can see there is no way the two designs can coexist, but someone at Nike apparently disagrees.

We'll just have to wait for the current love affair with the color back to pass.

I kind like the design, though. I'm a little worried about the color. Compare the uniforms with the shade of red in the word "Utah." The latter looks like Utah Crimson, our official color. The unis look kind of orange. Please, let this be just a matter of appearances.

Can't load that one at work, but I'm guessing it's the horrendous pattern on our practice jerseys. As bad as this is for BBall, I'm more worried about how that's going to look on the football jerseys and god forbid helmets.

The orange-y look happens because no Utah team actually wears Crimson. There was an attempt in the early 2000's to switch Utah over to true Crimson, but fans wouldn't buy the purple-y merch. Since then we've commited ourselves to Pantone 200...also known as Ohio State Scarlet...the fans seems to have no qualms about it, except the passing awareness that it kind of looks orange under some lighting.

You know Utah's visual style guide has always listed 4 primary colors, Red, White, Black and Gray :)

I didn't know we actually had 4 colors until I worked on the fields and we were trying to figure out the color scheme for the new MWC logo, which really needed more than just red and white, and that's when I found out black and gray had always been official colors.

As for the color of the uniforms, if Utah is using Pantone 200 for uniforms it will look different next to text, as printed material is supposed to be in Pantone 187 per the university.

These are interesting, but ultimately feel a little confused (but well, Under Armour and all). On the one hand, the shirt appears to be going for more of a classic basketball look. It's two-toned and uses a skinny block font with no stroke. Odd collar and pit stain sewing aside, these are clearly meant to look a bit retro. The shorts on the other hand are following in the great modern basketball tradition of ugly, ill-conceived shorts (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bwt-7L-CYAEsx7r.jpg). So ultimately, either half of the uni feels out-of-place. That aside, I would suggest these are a minor upgrade from the last set, but that's not a big compliment.

The black uniforms especially look like a classic basketball style apron being worn over the top of an ugly modern uniform. I guess we had to one up bibs with aprons.
