On this date in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emanicapation Proclamation. Lincoln has since been criticized for not freeing the slaves sooner, or for only freeing the slaves in the states that seceded from the union (by at least some Southern partisans, he has been called a murder, and held responsible for the 600K deaths of the American Civil War). This might be an interesting topic for discussion here at UB5.
