As a result of a wargame in the mid-1990s, the U.S. Navy wanted a smaller, more expendable ship to operate in the littorals -- the strips of water close to shore -- to hunt mines and submarines, fight small boats, and find and destroy mobile missile batteries ashore.

Huh- so that's how littoral cells got their name. They're the cells that line the narrow blood filled channels that run through the spleen.

I've spent some time on several ships like these (links). I've participated in amphibious landing exercises from LCAC's and AAV's. I suppose Littorals will serve specific purposes "close in".
