Rumors are swirling that SLC is in the mix with 34 other cities (in 9 metro areas).

Pete Ashdown has some commentary on whether or not SLC should be footing the bill:

Just got a press release from the mayors office (yes, my work email gets flooded with such things) confirming the city and Google are doing an exploration on whether to bring Google Fiber to Salt Lake and what it would take.

And before anyone asks, it will only be in SLC proper if it's built.

How on earth did Provo get it before Salt Lake?

Google bought provo's existing (financially struggling government Owned) fiber network and just made some minor changes.

They bought the infrastructure for $1.

Something that has stuck in Pete Ashdown's craw.

I guess that's an example of free enterprise at work. Or maybe a local government screwing up the market.

Provo was standing to lose millions keeping it. It bailed them out.

Ashdown is not fond of Google's network as they only allow their residential and small business customers on it, he prefers an open fiber network
