A quick look shows Dubois, Dean and Martin stunk up the gym. Jarred went 2/9 with 4 turnovers. Dean and Martin combined for 0/4 and 4 turnovers. In a ten point loss, those numbers really stand out. Tucker had his second best game of the season (20 eff vs Willamette). The stat lines for Colorado, more specifically the +/- line, is versus Utah opponents not off of Colorado's season averages. Utah's numbers are based off of their season averages.

You can see right away Utah allowed a pretty average game defensively but offensively they struggled. -12.7 free throw attempts off their season average is not good and Utah only forced a season low for a Utah opponent of 8 fouls on Colorado (previous low was 10 vs UCLA). Utah's 50 points was also a season low and this would coincide with another season low in field goals made of 19 (tied Arizona St and BYU games). Utah also grabbed a season low of 3 offensive rebounds (matched vs Washington and Boise State - both wins mind you).

On the bright side Utah gained 10 steals vs Colorado, a season high and shot 100% from the stripe (only 4/4). The two teams combined for a season high for a Utah game of 22 steals (10 Utah, 12 Colorado).

Overall Utah played the defensive game they wanted to. They held Colorado to only 60 points, 2.2 under a Utah opponent, but just couldn't draw the fouls they needed to keep the game close. -8 makes and -16 attempts and +9 fouls was the difference.

With this equation: ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks)) - ((FGA - FGM) + (FTA-FTM) + Turnovers))...

I get Loveridge at 17 and Washburn at 11.

Do you use a different equation?

Right on, brother.

The only other thing I would add is the whole concept of team Offensive and Defensive efficiency. Basically, you take the number of points, divide it by the estimated number of possessions, and times it by 100.

What you get is points scored per 100 possession and points allowed per 100 possessions.

Last year, Utah's offensive efficiency was a brain freeze inducing 88.16, while their defensive efficiency was a hysterical 110.93 - a differential of -22.77. You have got to be kidding me.

This year up to CO, offensive efficiency is 101.43 and defensive efficiency is 97.72 - a differential of +3.71.

The pace is about the same as last year - 64 possessions this year, 63 last year.

The defensive efficiency is actually quite good, about on a par with the early 2000's Majerus teams (and slightly better than the sainted '98 poets warriors). However, the 1999 team had a defensive efficiency of 87.17 - meaning they made most teams worse than last year's Utes.

The offensive efficiency this year isn't horrible, but no Utah team that's done much of anything has a lower efficiency than about 107. In fact, 107 seems about the mark to hit for a Utah team to have postseason success.

Again, this just reinforces what anybody who is paying attention (all 3,000 of us) knows - the defensive structure is in place for sustained success, but Utah absolutely has to find more offense.

This is, however, the best offense since 2009. Whoopity doo!!

First of, that sucked. Second, Washburn and Bachynski both scored season lows for efficiency vs Cal. Bachynski has been in the negative 4 times (2 times vs Cal) and Washburns' previous low was 4. Dubois scored a 0 efficiency for the second straight game.

Overall Utah hit a season low in 7 categories. 16 field goals made, 3 three pointers made, 0 blocks (first time all year they didn't record a block), 46 points and 40 efficiency (averaging 72.0 on the season). Utah also shot a season low 29.1% from the field (34.5% @ASU) and 17.6% from deep (20% vs UCLA). Utah also saw the largest discrepancy at the free throw line -22.0% (Utah made 2 less but attempted 2 more).

Over the last 5 games only Washburn and Loveridge averaged over 7 efficiency. To put that in perspective, Arizona for the season has 6 players over 7 and another at 6.9. See below:
Hill 15.2, Johnson 13.1, Lyons 11.7, Parrom 11.5, Ashley 9.9, Tarczewski 8.6, Jerrett 6.9. Utah currently has 3 over 7 for the season (see first post in this thread). A good rule of thumb is your top 6 should be over 7, and 3 or 4 over 10. Team average should be around 80. Utah had a 40 efficiency tonight.

Sorry for the delay on the Stanford game, I've been up in Portland all week.

As for Oregon State, great game. First time all year that the top 6 players all scored better than their season efficiency. Easy to win game when you play above average.

First things first, Utah tied their season high with 9 threes (SMU g1, Boise, CalSN) After 2 entire games without a block, Utah went for 6 blocks tonight (Washburn with 3). Utah shot a season low 56.3% from the line 9/16. This was the first game since Arizona State (also a win) that Utah shot over 44% for the game. 13 times Utah has shot over 44% and Utah has won 10 of those game. 10-3 when shooting over 44%. I thought it would be interesting to see which categories if Utah is over their season average, they win (fouls being less than average)

Utah tied their season high in steals (10) today. Utah played very aggressive and it paid off. I believe the biggest key over the past 3 games in shot production. Utah has been shooting great the past 3 games and went from a season low of 46 points vs Cal just over a week ago to 66 vs Stanford and 72 vs the Oregon teams. That tells me better shots and better passing. Really playing well lately.

Defensively Utah played an average game. Oregon didn't get any season lows or season highs today. In fact, a look at the stats above shows that Oregon was within 2 stats in 8 of the categories listed. That says Utah played their game and moved the ball. It sure is nice to see this again from a Utah team. The last 5 home games Utah is 4-1. Below are the efficiency stats for the last 5 home games. You can see Washburn loves playing at home. He's going to be missed next year, I can't believe I said that.

This game was preseason so it won't count versus the rest of the games averages but it's nice to see. As expected Utah won every single statistical category except one...FT%. Utes were awful. 24/45 for 53.3% was 9% worse than St. Martin. Ogbe 1/8, Van Dyke 1/4, Loveridge 5/9...chalk it up to tired legs but I hope this isn't the trend for the season.

Great first game, a bit embarrassing to count these numbers but it all counts as a win. For the record, last year versus Willamette Utah had three guys over 20 efficiency (Seymour, Loveridge and Tucker) and the season high was 36 for Washburn vs Arizona State. To have two guys over 30 efficiency is pretty amazing, on top of that the efficiency score should be somewhat close to the real score. To have a 155 point spread on efficiency is unheard of.

Everybody had a down night off their averages (of course their averages were based on Evergreen State) except for Lenz. He was a beast on Friday. 9/11 from the field, 6 boards 3 blocks, 20 points. The most consistent player on the team so far is Brandon Taylor 19 efficiency in both games. Last year Washburn lead the team with 15.6 efficiency, Utah has 4 guys over that today (Loveridge 31.5, Wright 28, Lenz 19.5 and Taylor 19), nice things to see.

A couple of downsides, always have to have a downside to get better, Utah gave up 8 steals and turned the ball over 14 times and committed 17 fouls. Utah shot 7 less shots and had 6 less steals than Gunrock and his Mustangs. Other than that it was a fairly solid team vs the 245 ranked team in the country. Next up...347 ranked Grand Canyon and 330 ranked Lamar. Utah should win by 30 and 20 respectfully.

Sorry, I'm not sold on Lenz yet. I didn't see the UCDavis game, but I need to see him step up in a couple of games against real competition before I'll believe he's any sort of answer at the 5. Fortunately, he won't see real competition for a couple of months.

I will say that Lenz looked much more confident and composed than he ever did last year.

It is extremely unlikely that he will keep up that kind of production, but I think he will be an improvement over last year.

Delon Wright matched his career high efficiency (Evergreen), his low for the season is 17. To put that into perspective Washburn averaged 15 last season to lead the Utes. Loveridge had his season low, previously 18 vs Lamar and he's been Mr. Consistency, just had an off night. Wright and Loveridge are averaging 34% of the points and 40% of the efficiency. It's clear to see who the 7 deep are with this squad. I really like Onwas, this kid started slow but has come to life the past three games. I recall many people wanting to know who the third option would be to step up, it's Onwas.

Ball State was by far the best team Utah has played this year and the efficiency stat shows it. 58 was the highest efficiency score Utah has given up all year, in fact Utah's opponents have increased with every game. That could mean Utah's D is suffering or the opponents are getting better. Evergreen St had an efficiency score of 9. Utah also gave up season highs in three's made (9), three's attempted (27), free throws made (16), assists (11) and points (69). One bright side is Utah forced the second most turnovers for the season (15).

As for the Utes, they tied a season high with 10 steals. One very bright sign is the turnovers have gone down almost every game, from game 1 to Ball State they went (12, 14, 15, 10, 5, 7). Utah was right at their average in three's made (6), free throws shot (28), offensive rebounds 12, assists (20) and fouls (14). One down side is Utah was shooting 87% from the line in the last two games but only shot 64.3% vs Ball State (18/28). Ball State likes to shoot the three and they did achieve a season high in three point attempt difference over Utah +12, on the flip side Utah was +8 on turnovers...tying a season high.

Utah games have seen 42 three point attempts in three of the 6 games but Ball State was a season record for makes (15). They also combined for a season high in steals (Utah 10, Ball St 3). The teams combined for the second best shooting night 47.4%, just behind the Lamar game at 47.6%. They did shoot the best from deep at 35.7% total for both teams. This all with Loveridge going for 17%.

Next up is the first road game...at Boise State.

Currently, Utah has played an easy schedule. Before Ball State Utah had played the 351st toughest schedule, that's dead last. Boise hasn't been tested much either, 337th toughest. Right now I see this as a Utah loss by 6. I hope I'm wrong and if this was at home I'd say Utah by 2 so they definitely have a shot.

Sorry about the delay in updates, Christmas work and the new wife keep me pretty busy now. I'll try to cover the past 4 games all here with season highs and lows.

Fresno State Utah reached a season high for opponents shots made (27) and points (77) and efficiency (79), Utah opponents averages 22.6 shots, 61.7 points and 52.3 efficiency. You can see Fresno is probably the best team Utah has played so far by the numbers...sorry Boise. The BYU game yielded a lot of opponent season highs. 17 and 31 from the charity stripe, 12 offensive rebounds and 39 total rebounds were all highs for Utah opponent. BYU also got 6 blocks. 54.8% from the line was a season low for Utah opponent...way to step up that free throw defense. Idaho State and Boise both took 9 steals from the Utes, season highs, just like they stole the weather from Hawaii. Fresno and Idaho State both handed out 12 assists, season highs. Idaho State shot a season high for a Utah opponent from deep at 50% (8/16) and Fresno Shot 50.9% from the field. Utah defends on average 25% from deep and 38.4% from the field. Take out the first three cupcakes and that percent only rises to 41.9% from the field and 33.1% from deep. The only season low over the past 4 games was Boise and their blocked shots...big fat zero.

As for Utah, they stayed relatively consistent. They did shoot season high 29 three point attempts versus Boise and BYU and making a season high 11 versus Idaho State. Utah has 15 blocks over the past 2 games. The only major downside was the 22 fouls versus BYU. Utah only averages 14.3 fouls per game. Utah has been above average in shooting since the Boise game. Currently their season averages are 53.5% from the field, 35.4% from deep and 71.6% from the line. They shot 59.6% and 58.1% versus Fresno and Idaho State from the field. 41.2% and 50% from deep and 78.9% and 72.2% from the line. As good as everybody is saying about how well Utah shot the ball versus BYU they only ended up at 41.5% from the field, second worst of the season (Savannah St 40.7%) and only 31% from deep, third worst (18.2% Savannah St and 24.1% Boise). The first few games skew the numbers quite a bit (48 free throws versus Evergreen St??) but they are starting to level off now. Utah averages 109.1 efficiency but over the last four games Utah averages 92.5 efficiency, obviously tougher opponents. Just remember last season the Utes hardly every broke 70. During the Idaho State game Utah was only held to 43 shots, 14 under their average.

The Idaho State game was also the least amount of shots for a Utah game this season with 99 but it also saw the most three pointers made with 19 (11 Utah, 8 Idaho State). Utah and BYU combined for 48 three point shots...Utah games typically see 38.6 shots. In the Evergreen State game there were 57 free throws....slow and boring (Evergreen 9 Utah 48)...during the BYU game there were 54 free throws (Utah 23 BYU 31). There was also a combined season high for steals and blocks...15 and 13 respectively. The season high for combined efficiency was 190 (Fresno State) but the season low was 135 (Boise State)...oddly enough the ugliest game of the season is the Utes only loss. Utah and blue shot for a season low combined 37.2% from the field and 29.2 from deep.

9-1 sure is nice to say....now bring on the Bobcats!

Query: are those regular +/- numbers (i.e. did your team outscore the opponent while you were on the floor)? If so, I'm stunned that JLo had a negative +/- against the Cougars. He played almost the entire game and he put us up 15 early.

I believe it is +/- efficiency relative to his current average. Basically who played better/worse than they usually do.

It is interesting to see that the two "above average" players in the BYU game was Olsen and Bachynski. It confirms what we all saw that our post players competed well against BYU.

No surprise about Wright. BYU was getting back and making sure he didn't get into transition. I suspect we will see more and more teams do this as the season goes on. The upside is that it reduces the number of opportunities for our opponents to get offensive rebounds.

Those numbers are off their season averages. The second post in this thread (back on page 1) has the updated current averages for each player. -1 for JLo meant he has been averaging 1 more efficiency point per game. He was hot to start but cooled off quite a bit.

A pretty average game for the Utes. They let Texas State hang in there for a while then put them away late. This has actually been a very successful MO for the Utes all season. Can't do that versus really good teams though. Wright is shooting 71.3% on the season 67/94... unreal. He was 5/5 vs the Bobcats and led the Utes with 18 efficiency. Even though Wright was 3rd in scoring and 5th in rebounds he still lead the team in efficiency.

There were 5 season lows for combined stats between teams. 39 shots made and 96 shots attempted were well below Utah game averages of 52 and 114. It's obvious Texas State wanted to slow the ball down. 16 assists combined was also a season low. Utah games average 144.7 points per game but this game only reached 119, also a season low. The two combined for 121 efficiency which was 36 below the average for a Utah game.

Utah is now 10-1 on the season. Looking at the individual stats they are also 10-1 in 5 specific categories: (meaning they won the category for the game in these categories)
- Field goals made, they tied Savannah State with 22 so really they are 10-0-1 (Utah averages 7.5 more per game)
- Assists, again they tied Savannah State with 11. (averages 9.2 more)
- Blocked shots, Fresno State was the only team to get more blocks, 1. (averages 3.2 more)
- Efficiency, Boise State beat Utah by 1 on efficiency (Utah averages 55.4 more)
- Field Goal %, Utah only shot worse versus Savannah State -2.4% worse (Utah averages 11.2% higher than opponents)
- Points, Obviously Boise State was the only team to score more (averages 23.5 more)

On the flip side Utah is 1-10 in fouls. Only the BYU game did Utah hav more fouls than their opponent.

Turnovers Utah is 3-8. Utah had more turnovers versus UC Davis, Grand Canyon and Idaho State.

Rebounds Utah is 9-2. Two games Utah was outrebounded, Boise State and BYU. Utah averages 8.1 more rebounds per game over opponents.

Utah is also 9-2 in free throws made. They tied Fresno and had 7 less than Boise (the reason they lost that game)

Bach had a great game, since sitting out the Fresno game Dallin has averaged 14.4 efficiency. He leads the team with 2.4 Offensive Rebounds per game. The Utes tied a season high for steals with 10 and set a new season high for blocks with 9. Utah also shot 89.5% from the line 17/19 and was above average for shots attempted with 63.

Oregon had a season high for a Utah opponent in three categories, 17 free throws made, 39 rebounds (team rebounds not counted) and 11 steals (wish it were only 10). Utah has only shot worse than their opponent in 2 games (Savannah St -2.4% and Oregon -0.61%. Oregon was 38.7% and Utah was 38.1%, both teams had difficulty finding the bucket.

Both teams set a season high for steals for a Utah game this year with 21. This was the second worst shooting game for a Utah game where both teams combined for 38.4%, BYU game teams combined for 37.2%. Utah has lost two games both by 2 points. Utah is averaging 85.8 points per game and giving up 60.2 points. Utah is averaging 111.1 efficiency and allowing 49.8 efficiency. Utah still beat Oregon by 10 in efficiency but lost the game, only Boise did better on efficiency than Utah...and that was only by 1.

Loveridge leads the team in 6 statistical categories (Shots Made 5.9 avg, shots attempted 13.0, free throws made 4.2, free throws attempted 5.2, rebounds 9.1 and points 17.5.

Delon Wright also leads in 6 categories (Minutes 33.6, Assists 5.8, turnovers 2.7, steals 2.0, blocks 1.7 (tied with Lenz) and efficiency 25.0).

Oregon State broke two opponent season highs today for a Utah game. 10 three pointers made and 15 assists (Utah has only allowed 10 or more assists 6 times this year)

Utah broke one season high, that was three pointers made 12, previous high 11 vs Idaho State. Utah was above average in assists 23, steals 8 and fouls 17. This was only the 4th time all year Utah was out rebounded and tied the season high for being outrebounded -4 (Boise State). Utah has 9 less turnovers than Oregon State, that's good for a season high difference for that stat. Utah was outrebounded on the offensive glass by 6, also tied a season high (BYU).

The two teams combined for a season high for a Utah game with 22 three pointers made. They also combined for season lows in rebounds 50 and steals 10 (4 other times), this coming off a game high of 21 steals vs Oregon (again, wish there was one less). Todays game was the second best shooting performance for a Utah game, the teams combined for 54% and a season high from deep at 53.7%.

What an intense game, sucks to lose but what a great game. Utah played great defense but in the end they were simply out hustled and out manned. Even though Arizona only played 7 players, Utah looked to be more exhausted at the end.

First the positives, Utah shot 87.5% from the free throw line which is probably what kept them in the game. Utah did make one more from deep on Arizona (4 to 3) and actually shot a higher percentage for the game +.43% of 40.4% to 40% for Arizona. Utah also shot 9% points higher from deep 30.8% to 21.4% for Arizona...that's about all the positives.

Now for the down side. Utah gave up a season high 18 offensive rebounds to Arizona, they are an amazing offensive rebounding team and it showed tonight. Arizona only had 3 steals all game and only had 15 personal fouls. That tells me they simply played straight up defense and forced Utah to either get a delay of game or a missed shot. It's not hard to see why they are the #1 team in the country. The two teams combined for 24 offensive rebounds (18 Arizona 6 Utah) which was a season high. Utah games average about 16.1 offensive rebounds so this was high. This coming two games after the season low of 8 total versus UCLA (UCLA 6 Utah 2).

Not much else to say except for this was the toughest stretch of the season so far (with Colorado remaining) and Utah is 1-2 on it. Next tough stretch is a 6 game stretch to end the season @UCLA, Arizona, Arizona St, Colorado, @Cal @Stanford.

I am not necessarily pulling for the Pac-12. For most of the year, these guys are the enemy, and now I'm supposed to flip a switch to like them? I can still see Johnson and McConnell laughing at us and sticking out their tongues. If there's an image later in this tournament that has them crying behind a towel, am I supposed to be sad?

I've never really been a root-for-the-conference kind of guy. I wear Utah gear, not Pac-12 gear.

I do know that we get some extra cash if our teams win. That's nice. But everyone else gets it too, so what's the big deal? Plus, success within a conference is a zero sum game. Which scenario is better for Utah basketball:

1) Stanford goes to the Final Four. Johnny Dawkins becomes a big deal in coaching and is able to start recruiting big time guys to Palo Alto.

or

2) Stanford gets blown out in the 1st round. Johnnuy Dawkins remains on something of a hot seat.

Play the same game with Alford and UCLA. It won't take many wins for him to shed his "tournament underachiever" reputation. It's in our interests for him to keep that rep.

I suppose there can be a hope that the Pac-12 turns into a Big East, capable of getting 7, 8, 9 bids based on reputation alone. Big Monday night deals, sky-high ratings, name recognition, etc. I would love that, but we're a million miles away from it.

No, at this point, I'll root just based on matchup. There should not be one American outside of Stanford alumni (or Palo Alto return missionaries) rooting against Dayton. Teams like Dayton are what make this tournament great.

Utah is in a solid hoops conference, and that is not going to change. It definitely will not change if I root against the Cardinals this weeks.

I get what you are saying, but I am not so sure. I don't see why either coach can't win if they get good players. Plus, Stanford has potential to be a recruit stealer from us. My irrational Stanford hate aside, it's really better for Utah if they are horrible.

I agree with Sancho on this one. When we were in the WAC, I would cheer like crazy for New Mexico and Wyoming to win a game in the tournament. I did this because we had a conference with no respect so I felt that increasing the conference's profile would raise the recruiting tide of all boats.

However, the PAC is different. When Stanford makes the sweet sixteen, that really helps Stanford. It doesn't help us recruit against them. Same thing if ASU had made a run in the tournament. In fact, I root against all Pac teams in the tournament.

I agree with Sancho on this one. When we were in the WAC, I would cheer like crazy for New Mexico and Wyoming to win a game in the tournament. I did this because we had a conference with no respect so I felt that increasing the conference's profile would raise the recruiting tide of all boats.

However, the PAC is different. When Stanford makes the sweet sixteen, that really helps Stanford. It doesn't help us recruit against them. Same thing if ASU had made a run in the tournament. In fact, I root against all Pac teams in the tournament.

My view is situational, specific to the present. The PAC-12 has been much maligned lately as a hoops conference. That's why I think it's good for Utah if all the schools who get into the Dance make a good showing. Otherwise our good showings against those teams lose some luster. Once we are back in the Dance regularly I no longer care too much. Like you, I just want Utah to succeed.

Obviously without any other games to go off of Utah hit a season high and season low in every category.
The brightest takeaway from the game is watching it I thought Delon was off and had a bad game. Surprisingly he was the highest efficiency player in the game. 6/9 from the field, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals, 3 blocks...it all adds up.
Tucker played a lot of minutes, 33 and I'd be surprised if he keeps that up all year. Probably helped playing somebody his size.

Some of the negatives from this game...Utah was awful from the charity stripe. -27.3% worse than Ball State. Utah was 26-40 from the line. 4 guys shot 50% or worse. Can't have that. If Jak is going to get to the line 16 times he needs to be around 75%-80%. With that said Loveridge and Taylor combined for 11/12 from the line. Utah also attempted 13 less three pointers than Ball State and made 4 less. I felt like every time I looked up Ball State was hitting another three (Sellers). Utah won the turnover margin by 1 (15 to 14) and had 12 less fouls. IMO the early foul trouble from Ball State did them in, although I didn't appreciate the refs trying to even the margin.

All the talk was about how bad Delon played but at least he was 2/13 with 8 boards, 5 assists and 2 blocks. Jordan Loveridge had a bad game. 2/7 with 1 rebound, 2 assists and 1 steal. By far the worst game he's had since I started doing this efficiency thing. Gotta give it to the Aztecs. They played a hell of a game defensively and out hustled Utah in many aspects. Utah held their own though and didn't give up. Two months from now they will both be highly ranked and people will see a 4 point loss. Would have been nice to get a win but the final score shows Utah can compete with the best teams in the country.

Overall Utah gave up a season high 27 free throw attempts and 34 rebounds. Granted there was only one game to go off of but several categories Utah probably gave up a season high. 13 steals was also key. As for Utah they matched their season high in 3's made at 6 but shot 16 more, 9/25 at 24% ain't gonna cut it. Utah did increase their FT% from 65% to 68.8% so there is that. The largest deficiency was at the line. Utah made 7 less and shot 11 less from the stripe and had 7 more fouls. Utah did get 7 more blocks than the Aztecs but their scrappy second chance points made up the difference. Both teams only made 16 shots and Utah only shot one more shot 50 to 49 but the game was won at the line...oddly enough Utah shot a better % at the line by 2.1% but just didn't get there enough.

For the season Utah is allowing only 39.4% from the field but 41.9% from deep. Of course Ball St shot 45.5%, the Aztecs only 32.7%. Tough game and now Utah has 4 games that should be wins to put it together before that brutal 4 game stretch.

Something new I've been tracking is the overall ranking. I take every category and rank each player, add up every column and get a total. Right now Delon is winning with 66. There are 17 columns. This means Delon's average rank in every stat is just under 4th...in every category. He currently ranks 1st in (minutes, shots made, shots attempted, defensive rebounds, assists, steals and efficiency). Only three categories he is not ranked high (turnovers 13th, fouls 11th and shot% 11th) but you'd expect those when you play the most minutes.

Kuzma and Chapman...I have a feeling these two are going to be mentioned a lot over the next several years. Was this their breakout game? Sure it was Riverside but damn Kuzma looked sharp and Brekkott looked smooth. This game moved both those guys to 6th and 7th in the team in efficiency, I expect them to keep climbing. Everybody else had a solid game, 7 players performed above their average. Utah currently has 4 players above 10 in efficiency, remember a few years ago when if Utah had 2 we would celebrate? Loveridge is at 9.3 so it's almost 5.

Biggest positive, Delon went 2/2 from deep. Yes you read that correctly. I sure hope this is a sign of things to come for him. Problem is his shot was so slow better teams will not allow it. Utah was right at their average in most stats but had a season high for rebounds 45 and assists 21. Utah took more shots in this game than they did all season 56 and probably the best stat shot 75% from the free throw line, a season high. Efficiency was also a season high at 123, season average is 93.0. Utah dominated in several categories, Utah made 13 more shots, had 22 more rebounds and 46 more points (the most important stat).

For their opponent, Riverside tied a season high in shot attempts 55 (Ball state) and grabbed a lot of defensive rebounds 16 (season avg for Ute opponent) but received a season low in 11 categories. 29.1% from the field, 7.7% from deep but 100% from the line 9/9.

Utah is averaging 47.7% from the field, 41.2% from deep and 69% from the line
Utah opponents average 35.8% from field, 31.8% from deep and 79.6% from the line.
Utah leads their opponents in every category except 4 (shot attempts, steals, turnovers and FT%)

Utes roll easy. I'll make this short and sweet, it's Thanksgiving after all.

Utah gave up a season high for assists 10 and almost a season high in free throw attempts 23. The good news is Utah held UTPA to a season low for Ute opponents with 16 shots made (3 straight games of holding an opponent to only 16 makes), 45 shots, 22 rebounds, 2 steals, 16 turnovers (season high) and FT% 56.5...all season lows for Ute opponent.

For the Utes they had no season highs but game close in several categories. 59.1% only 0.1% lower than Ball State. 73.5% from line (75% vs Riverside), 8 threes made (9 vs Riverside), 25 free throws (26 vs Ball State). Overall a very solid game. The bad news is Utah had a season high in fould 22 and a season low in shot attempts and offensive rebounds...probably because they shot nearly 60%. So far Utah's most dominating defensive effort. Shot 23.5% better than their opponents and +7 on bloacks +5 on steals. Utah was +7 on blocks vs the Aztecs but were -8 on steals.

For the season Utah leads in every category except two, shot attempts -1.3 and free throw % -1.9%. Utah is dominating in efficiency +53.3.

Welcome back Dakarai Tucker...get well soon Jordan Loveridge. Utah shot 66.7% in the game bringing their season average up to 53.3% from the field. That's impressive. To put that into perspective, the Golden State Warriors lead the NBA at 49.3%. That should move Utah into the top ten in field goal %. Currently Ohio State leads the nation at 60.8%. For Utah to be at 60.8% the would have to have made 18 more shots. To get there now they would have to go 47/47 from the field vs Alabama State. That would be very impressive....not going to happen.

For the season efficiency numbers Poeltl is now leading the team at 19.6 with Delon right behind him at 19.2. Two guys just under 20 efficiency is really good. Delon still leads the team rankings list at average 3.0 rank per statistic. Delon is now shooting 44.4% from deep. I should note that Poeltl isn't even leading the team in FG%, that honor goes to Kuzma at 73.7%, Poeltl is 73.3%. Kyle is 14/19 on the season and 4/7 from deep, also leads from beyond the arc at 57.1%. One stat that gets overlooked frequently is the assist to turnover ratio. Right now Delon is leading at 2.88 assists to turnovers, with Isaiah right behind him at 2.43. Poeltl is one of the worst at 0.11 with only 1 assist to go against 9 turnovers only tied with Brandon Taylor at 9 turnovers to lead the team.

As for the no name North Dakota team, they put up 58 shots which was a season high for a Utah opponent and also only turned the ball over only 10 times, a season low for a Utah opponent (Aztecs 11). UND had 9 steals which is second only to San Diego State, other than that they were poor in many categories. Jaron Nash, UND, was averaging 16.8 pts and 8.8 (both team leading) but only managed 6 pts and 5 rebs vs Utah.

As for Utah, they had season highs in shots made (30) and field goal pct 66.7% (guess those go hand in hand). Tied a season high for points (90), second highest for defensive rebounds (30) fouls (14) and efficiency (113). This was the third straight game Utah shot over 70% from the charity stripe. Utah did get a season low for steals (2) and offensive rebounds (6) but that happens when you shoot 67%. Also a season low for three pointers made (6) for the third time (Ball St, SDSU and UND), only 42.9% second lowest for the year.

Obviously this was a 5 man show for Utah. Although Bachynski did get a 5 efficiency score only playing 9 minutes. That equated to 0.56 efficiency per minute (led the team). Poeltl .47, Chapman .42, Tucker .41, Taylor .39, Delon .36. This was the perfect game leading into a three game road trip. Lessons learned? Match opponents aggression. Wichita led early by being more aggressive. Free throws. Utes missed 11 free throws and won by 1. Could have won going away. Guard the three, Utah allowed 30 attempts from deep.

First the bad. Wichita had season highs for a Utah opponent in almost every category. 63 shots made, 11 threes made, 30 threes attempted, 25 defensive rebounds (second game in a row), 37 rebounds, 6 turnovers (season low) and efficiency 75. As for Utah it's obvious, 52.2% from the free throw line, this has to get better and it's an easy fix. 2 steals and 5 blocks were season lows. That's pretty crazy that 5 blocks is a season low. Utah allowed the Shockers to put up 12 more shots and were out rebounded on opponents side by 3. Utah also committed 5 more turnovers, (7 more vs SDSU)

Now the good, Utah had a season low for fouls (12) which translated to a season low for opponent FT attempts at 9. Interesting note, two of the three lowest opponent assist totals were in Utah losses 4 for SDSU, 8 for Wichita. Utah did shoot 9% higher from the field and 6.2% better from the line. Towards the end Wichita really forced some bad shots. Bottom line, both teams made 24 shots. 2 of the Wichita shots were three pointers (+2 WSU) but Utah was +3 on free throws (+1 Utah) and the difference in the game. Not putting Wichita to the line and making more, although they could have made a lot more, was the difference.

Tonight was the Delon Wright show. Two key steals that deflated any BYU comeback. Delon was the rock that stabled the bouncy ship. Delon sat for 3 minutes and BYU mounted a crazy flurry during that time which brought them back into the game. Delon had the play of the night with a steal, full court drive, around the back dunk on Collinsworth that finally shut up that annoying sex hungry crowd of children. Side note, their fans are annoying.

First the bad. BYU put up 65 shots, that's the most for a Utah opponent all season (Wichita 63). BYU had the third best performance from the field for a Utah opponent (Ball St 45%, Wichita 38%, BYU 37%), for the season Utah opponents are shooting 35.8% from the field...that's really good. BYU had 12 assists (second to Alabama St 13), 21 defensive rebounds (second to Alabama and Wichita 25), only had 7 turnovers (second to Wichita with 6). Utah was dreadful from deep, 14.3% (2/14) 2 was a season low for three's made. Utah tied their season low for assists (9 SDSU). Utah took 17 less shots than BYU (season high) and had 8 more turnovers. The numbers don't say Utah won this game. It's not often that a team takes 17 more shots, creates 8 more turnovers and makes 5 more threes and loses.

Now for the good. Utah shot 8.9% better from the field than BYU (45.8% - 36.9%). Utah actually shot better from the free throw line +3.3% but they attempted 20 more so it seemed like they were terrible, although 63.3% isn't great. Some interesting notes on the season. Utah has committed more fouls than their opponent in only 1 game (SDSU +7). Utah was -7 vs BYU and -10 vs Wichita. Not putting good shooting teams up for easy shots can be very beneficial. Utah has won the defensive rebounding stat in every game except Alabama St (tied 25). Utah has also shot better than their opponents in every game except one (SDSU -0.7% 32.7%-32.0%). With those lack of fouls comes a lack of free throw attempts. Utah has made and shot more free throws over their opponents in every game except one (SDSU -7 made -11 attempts). Isn't it interesting that the one game that keeps standing out is the one game Utah lose. It also happens to be the only game Utah didn't win the efficiency total (-3 vs SDSU).

I'll be brief. Kansas is good but Utah is right there.

Kansas made a season high for Utah opponent with 21 free throws made. They also shot a season high from deep at 54.5% from three 6/11. 91.3% 21/23 from the line was 3rd best (Riverside 9/9, Ball State 12/13). Kansas tied a season low for Utah opponent with 7 offensive rebounds, probably because they shot the second highest FG% 41.9% (Ball St 45.5%)

Utah had a season low for defensive 18 and total rebounds 29 vs the Jayhawks and assists 8. The one shining spot was 82.4% from the line for the Utes (what kept them in the game) 14/17. Utah did have 9 steals 2nd best for the season, 11 vs Ball State and fourth best for the season in turnovers.

UNLV is the first team all year to dominate the boards, Utah was -7 in rebounds vs the Rebels. They were more active on the offensive boards and won the battle 9-3 on offensive boards and 41-34 overall. UNLV also had the most blocks vs the Utes 8, than any other team. If they would have hit 80% from the line this would have been close....but they didn't. They hit 43.5% from the line (season low for Utah opponent) and only 18.2% from deep 2/11, only Riverside was worse 1/13. Utah has held all but 2 teams under 40% from the field (Ball St, Kansas) and UNLV was 2nd worse at 32.7% 17/52. Aztecs also shot 32.7% at 16/49.

For Utah, they still had 31 rebounds +5 over season average and achieved a season high in steals 12. The season low for blocks though at 2, been averaging 6. Utah was 10% lower than average from the field at 39.6%, 5% lower from deep at 33.3% and 9% lower from the line at 57.1%. Utah has had three of the last 5 games shooting below 60% from the charity stripe...pathetic. The only good news is the Utes shot 13.7% higher than UNLV did.

Utah still owns all but three category averages for the season. They are behind in field goat attempts 53.9-51.0, offensive rebounds 9.8-9.5 and FT% 69.4%-66.5%.

This will be a good win by the end of the season. SD St could easily win the Summit League and enter the big dance. With that being said Utah really dominated them inside. Even with Reyes and Loveridge out and Poeltl having some foul trouble Utah still dominated the paint. The Jackrabbits made a season high for Utah opponent in field goals with 25 putting up the third highest score of the season (Ball St 72, Wichita St 68, SDSt 66). SDSt also shot the third highest % of the season at 39.7% from the field (Ball St 45.5%, Kansas 41.9%) For the third straight game a Utah opponent failed to commit 20 fouls (16,17,17 respectfully), averaging 22.1 for the season. Not sure the reason behind this except for Utah is getting cleaner more open shots.

As for Utah they tied a season high for assists at 21 (Riverside) and put up the second most attempts from deep with 23 (San Diego St 25). Utah is averaging 5.8 blocks per game on the season but only 3.3 over the past 3 games. Utah was averaging 68.5 efficiency over the tough 4 game stretch but scored 99 tonight bringing their season average up to 89.5 per game. Utah is averaging 9.1 offensive rebounds per game for the season but only 6.5 for the past 4 games. Utah was +4.5 on shots made and +6.4 shot attempts which equalled +4.7 in points. I liked the up tempo pace and it worked vs this team.

Delon Wright has been held below 10 efficiency once (9 vs UNLV) and has hit 30+ three times now. He's averaging 22.4 efficiency on the season which is a huge number if you've been following this stat. For the season Delon is still dominating every category and ranks #1 in 11 of 22 categories including (minutes, shots made, shot attempts, FT made, FT attempts, assists, steals, points, efficiency, assist/turnovers, points/minute) The only categories he's behind in is turnovers #14 (last), fouls #9, 3pt % #7, FT% #6 and offensive boards #5.

Welcome back to the fold Jordan Loveridge. Picked up right where he left of and then some. 3/5 from deep, Utah really missed him spreading the floor. First the good.

Utah held USC to only 5 free throws and only 2 makes, by far the lowest total for a Utah opponent. They also shot only 40% which was also a season low (even worse than Utah if you can believe...more on that later). USC also shot 23.1% from deep which is 4th lowest for a Utah opponent. For Utah they are a model of consistency on the defensive boards. Utah averages 26.6 defensive rebounds per game and they pulled down 26 rebounds. In fact, only two games (Kansas 18 and Ball State (1st game) 20) has Utah not been within 2 or 3 defensive rebounds from 26. Utah made a season high from deep (11), thanks J Love, after shooting 19. This put Utah at 57.9% from deep the 3rd highest of the season (66.7% vs Ball State and 61.5% vs Texas-PA). Utah was +34.8% from the three point line. Utah had 19 assists (+3.9 over their average) and totaled 105 efficiency (+11.8 average). Utah is now averaging 93.2 efficiency and giving up 52.9. That is a huge discrepancy.

Now for the bad...free throw shooting. The only excuse I can give for the poor FT shooting is they are kicking ass on the defensive end. Utah averages 6 less fouls per game over their opponents but have attempted 129 more free throws. Utah doesn't put their opponents on the line and that is a huge positive. Utah plays solid defense (opponents shooting 36.7% for the season) and doesn't foul. Recipe for success. The downside to that is players are tired. Missed free throws are the #1 sign of fatigue. Utah attempts 10 more shots from the line per game and for the season they aren't that far off. 69.5% for Utah opponents vs 65.1% for Utah. After all Utah actually shot better than USC 50% vs 40% but it just looked bad since they attempted 4 times the amount. Interesting note, Utah has attempted well under their average from the line over the past 5 games. Utah was attempting 29.6 free throws early in the season but only 19.0 in the last six. Chalk that up to better opponents who play better defense. With all that being said...Utah needs to hit their damn free throws.

***Side note*** Weber State leads the nation from the free throw line at 78.6%. Utah currently ranks 277th, just ahead of Louisville, Arizona and Washington. Utah is ranked 34th in attempts (yes BYU you're #1 in attempts and by a wide margin...must be bribing refs again) just behind Louisville (16th) and Arizona (9th). Utah opponents would rank 309th in attempts overall...out of 351. FYI - Utah is 18th in three point % at 40.4% and 7th in the nation in field goal % at 51.0%. One thing I noticed is Utah is ranked 156th in steals (6.7 per) but they hardly put anybody on the line. That tells me they play sound defense without reaching, I prefer that.

Next up UCLA tomorrow. Should be a fun one. UCLA is currently riding a 4 game losing streak to some tough teams (Gonzaga, Kentucky, Alabama and Colorado. They currently have the 64th SOS sitting at 8-6.

I guess UCLA doesn't like playing on Sundays.

The good. 28 efficiency was the third lowest for a Utah opponent (26 Riverside, 27 Texas-PA). The 39 points was a season low bringing Utah's points allowed average to 55.5 at exactly 777 points for the season. 28.8% from the field was also a season low for a Utah opponent and 9.1% from deep 1/11 was the second lowest allowed (7.7% Riverside 1/13). UCLA only made 15 shots, this brings Utah's average opponents shots made to under 20 at 19.9 (FTR Utah averages 26.1 shots made). There are only 14 teams out of 351 who make less than 20 shots per game. Utah allows 36.2% from the field, only 5 out of 351 schools shoot a worse percentage. Utah currently ranks 15th in field goal defense. (Kentucky allows 29.7%...unreal). Utah shot their best FT% of the season today 84.2% 16/19, that's nice to see. Utah shot 22 three's vs UCLA, third highest (25 Aztecs, 23 (twice) Alabama St, SDk St). Utah was +30.9% from free throw line.

The bad. Not much to complain about in this game. Utah dominated the Bruins. The only real negative I can find from this game is Utah didn't shoot over 50% for the first time since before Christmas. Utah hasn't been getting to the line as often as they did earlier in the season, probably because the competition is better. Almost 30 attempts per game before Kansas, since Kansas only 19 attempts. One could argue that they are more efficient on offense but before Kansas Utah shot 51.6% and only 49.6% since. I still say it's better competition, before Kansas Utah was fouled on average 24.1 times per game, since Kansas only 17.3. Utah has only fouled out 10 players in 14 games, Tony Parker today. Probably would hurt to get to the line more often, foul trouble changes the defensive strategy.

I'd update the top 25 opponents efficiency but the higest UCLA player was 8 (Tony Parker) putting him at 32nd. No changes to note.

Paint me impressed. Utah is on a roll.

The good. Utah was able to get fouls called. 25 to be exact. The last time Utah had 25+ fouls from an opponent was Alabama State (10 games). Put that on Delon driving to the lane which also gave him 12/12 from the line. I love to see that. Utah shot 76.7% from the line, 3rd best for the season. They also shot 52.9% from deep 9/17 pulling the team average from deep to 40.5%. With all those fouls Utah shot 23 free throws. The last time Utah made 20+ free throws was 12 games ago vs North Dakota. Utah was averaging 13.8 FT's made over that stretch, 16.8 for the season. Utah was also +17 on FT makes (season high) and +20 FT attempted (2nd highest).

The bad. Utah gave up a season high 13 assists to the Devils, most of which in garbage time. Utah has been allowing 9.1 assists. Arizona State put up 24 three point attempts (2nd most for Utah opponent) but they only made 9 (still good for 3rd best). Utah tied their season low for blocks with 2 and even though they scored right at their average for points at 76 (averaging 75.8) Utah shot a season low shot attempts with 41, by far a season low. Utah has been averaging 51.4 shot attempts. Of course shooting 53.7% helps lower the shot attempts, which also translated to the lack of offensive rebounds (Utah had 7). Utah was -15 in shot attempts and -6 in offensive rebounds vs ASU.

On that note, the only category Utah isn't winning the per game average is shot attempts and offensive rebounds.

Only one player had a positive efficiency game from their average. Give Arizona a ton of credit, they frustrated Delon, they doubled Poeltl effectively, they took away Utah's motion offense by knocking them off their screens. They outcoached Utah today. That was Bachynski's worst game of the season, it was also the worst game for Dakarai. Poeltl's 8 efficiency was his second worst (6 @BYU) and Delon Wright's 12 efficiency was his 3rd worst (9 @UNLV, 11 @SDSU).

The bad...Utah gave up a season high 83 efficiency (allowing 52.8) and 49.1% from the field (allowing 37.3%). Arizona owned the offensive glass pulling down 17 (season high for Utah opponent) and 40 rebounds (2nd to 41 @UNLV). Arizona's 69 points was the second highest Utah alllowed (72 game 1 Ball St) all season. On Utah's side they now own a plethora of season lows vs the Wildcats. 16/41 from the field are both season lows (averaging 25/51). 10/14 from the free throw line are also both season lows (averaging 16/24). 20 rebounds for Utah is by far a season low, (29 vs Kansas and averaging 35.1 per game). Again, give it to Arizona, they owned the glass. Utah scored 51 points (49 vs SDSU) and their 52 efficiency is also a season low (54 vs SDSU, averaging 90.6). Utah pulled down only 15 defensive rebounds (season low) and only the second game all year under 20 defensive boards (18 @Kansas).

There was some good. Arizona is a great three point shooting team but today they were only 1/7 (both season lows for Utah opponents) and 14.3% from deep (7.7% UC Riverside and 9.1% UCLA only lower). Arizona also only forced 4 steals (Utah has been allowing 6.2). Utah made 9 shots from deep for the third straight game and shot 47.4% from deep. They also shot 71.4% from the free throw line a trend of 4 straight games over 70%. Utah was +8 on three's made and +12 on attempts giving them +33.1% from deep. That's about it for the good.

I had faith that Utah would give them a great game and possibly break their streak. Unfortunately Arizona went on two 9-0 runs and won by 18 points. Shit happens. I think overall this will be good for Utah. Tough place to play, gave them a solid effort. Made some stupid errors that hopefully won't happen in March. The best time to learn from your mistakes is before the entire season rides on that game. Utah will be fine. I expect them to drop 2-3 spots in the polls.

You'll notice that three of the top 6 performances now all came from today's game. Something that should also be pointed out that should be obvious by now. 9 out of 10 performances came with that player at home. I thought maybe Johnson would knock Sellers out of his game 1 performance but there he sits still at the top. If that doesn't tell you home court advantage then nothing does. It will be interesting to see when the return trips to JMHC take place.

Only one player had a positive efficiency game from their average. Give Arizona a ton of credit, they frustrated Delon, they doubled Poeltl effectively, they took away Utah's motion offense by knocking them off their screens. They outcoached Utah today. That was Bachynski's worst game of the season, it was also the worst game for Dakarai. Interesting to see statistically how completely they dominated us. In your other chart I saw that 3 of the top 6 efficiency performances against the Utes so far this season were by Arizona players (McConnell, Johnson, and Ashley). I too am hoping that this whupping by Arizona will be a serious growth experience for the young and relatively green Utes, who are still learning what it means to be competitive at this level.

Brandon Taylor obviously stepped it up and it was nice to see Jeremy Olsen fill in for the injured Poeltl. Don't know what else to tell you but Utah didn't miss a beat after the loss to Arizona.

The good...Utah only gave up one steal to the Cougars (Utah been allowing 5.9 steals). Utah also only allowed 46 shots (allowing 53.7 attempts). As for Utah, they shot a season high from the free throw line 19/22 86.4%. In fact, since the 50% 10/20 game vs USC Utah has shot 81/103 78.6%. Utah had a season low 3 turnovers (averaging 11.6). Utah attempted 60 field goals (2nd to Colorado 61) bringing their average attempts up to 51.3 shots per game. Utah was +9 in steals, a season high, and -14 for turnovers also a season best for Utah. The best stat is the +34.5% from the charity stripe. WSU only shot 51.9%.

The bad...the biggest glaring number against the Utes was 27 free throw attempts for WSU, luckily they only shot 51.9%. Utah's 19 personal fouls brings their season average up to 16.4 per game. Over the past 5 games Utah is committing 18 fouls per game. Utah only had 6 offensive rebounds but when you shoot 48.3% there aren't that many to go around. Utah averages 5 blocks per game but they haven't had 5+ blocks since the Colorado game. FYI - Washington (next game) is the best shot blocking team in the nation.

Dakarai put up the 20th best performance for a Ute this season. His 1st and only in the top 25. Poetlt and Delon both put up a 35 to lead the season highs. Poeltl has 4 of the top 25. Delon Wright has 11. Brandon Taylor has 5. Kuzma has 2. Chapman has 2. Only 4 times of the top 25 Ute performances were on the road (30 Delon @Kansas, 27 Delon @BYU, 23 Taylor @UNLV, 23 Delon @ASU). For the record, Brandon Taylors 18 ranks him 25th (tied at 21st) for the season.

The good....Utah held Washington to only 6/11 from the free throw line. Utah has been allowing 10.7/16.4. The 13 fouls from Utah was the first time Utah had less than 15 fouls since USC. Utah hit 20 assists for the 4th time this season and the first time in Pac12 play. +14 assists also tied a season high in discrepancy (Riverside +14). The 11 three point shots made tied the season high for Utah (USC also 11) and the 61.1% is the 3rd highest of the season. Pac12 opponents are shooting 56.6% from the free throw line (Arizona shot the best at 66.7% and in 7 games 5 were below 60%. That Utah free throw defense is something else. I see that as the offense is working hard for a shot and they're either tired or took a good shot for the foul. It could also be the Pac12 sucks from the free throw line.

The bad....Utah allowed 7 blocked to the nations leading blocking team. Washington has been averaging 6.72 so they hit their average. Washington only committed 13 fouls. That's a season low for a Ute opponent. This could be because Utah was avoid the interior due to Upshaw dominating the inside. Shooting 11/18 from deep seems to ease up on the fouls. Due to the lack of fouls Utah tied their season low of 10 free throws made and 2nd attempts at 15. 10/15 is well below the Utah average of 16.2/23.7. In fact, Utah has made 10 free throws three times this season (10/20 in the horrible 50% game vs USC, 10/14 vs a loss at Arizona and tonight 10/15 but shot lights out from deep). Utah lost the block statistic for the second straight game by 4 or more blocks. Utah has lost the block battle 4 times (UNLV, Colorado, WSU and Washington).

Washington actually put up really good efficiency numbers. Their problem is they only go 7 deep. Finally somebody got up there to knock Sellers off of his top spot.

Jordan Loverdige, I'm not putting all the blame on you for this game but you sure didn't help your case. Three missed shot from point blank? Why can't Jordan dribble in traffic? Does he dribble too high? It looks to me like he just dribbles blindly into a crowd sometimes. Nevertheless the entire team didn't play well. UCLA looked amped. UCLA looked prepared. The 1-2-2 defense confused Delon, that's not good. Corner threes beat a 1-2-2. Utah got back into this game when they started looking for the corner three. Plus they didn't run the baseline. The 2 guard is key in beating a 1-2-2 and when Taylor and Tucker finally realized that they did some damage...but it was too late.

The bad...three players had a better game from the first match in Utah (Bach +3, Chapman +1, Kuzma +1) 7 players had worse games. As for UCLA they only had 2 players play worse and 6 players posted better efficiency scores from game 1 (Alford +21, Hamilton +15, Powell +13, Looney +6, Allen +6, Welsh +2). Bottom line UCLA wanted that game much more than Utah did. Utah allowed a season high in assists (15), committed turnovers (6), Fouls (11) and 2nd highest in Efficiency (82, Arizona 83), Points (69, Ball St 72), free throws made (18, Kansas 21) and field goal % (46.2% Arizona 49.1% ). Utah had season lows in free throws made (6), attempted (9) and steals (2). Overall Utah played a lazy game. Utah has allowed over 42% from the field in the past 4 games. Safe to say Poeltl being hurt doesn't help.

The good...Utah did hold UCLA to only 1 block (third time this season) Utah was +5 on blocks and UCLA only shot 23.1% from deep 3/13. Utah did attempt 22 threes which is over their average of 18.6 but a lot of that was due to being down most of the game. That's about the only good that came from this game.

Bring on the Trojans.

Yes that is correct. USC scored a 20 for efficiency. That was the 4th time a team scored less than 30 efficiency vs Utah this season (28 UCLA game 1, 27 Texas-Pan America, 26 UC Riverside, 20 @USC)

Welcome back Jakob, 10th highest efficiency score for the season.. Pure domination inside and single handedly beating USC by himself. USC shot 26.5% and a lot of that had to do with Poeltl being back. A lot of season lows and highs in this game. See below.

The good.... Speaking of the 26.5%, that was a season low for a Utah opponent. The first UCLA game they shot 28.8%. Today's game brought the Utah opponent FG% to 37.8%. USC also went 1/12 from deep for 8.3% second only to 1/13 Riverside 7.7%. The 20 efficiency was a season low (mentioned above) and the 39 points ties a season low (UCLA game 1). USC only made 13 shots (new low) and only 4 assists (season low tied with San Diego State). As for Utah they shot a season high 13/15 86.7% from the free throw line. This brings the Ute average up to 68.8% for the season 326/474. Utah had 28 defensive rebounds +3 over average and 9 steals +2 over average.

The bad....Utah did allow 19 free throw attempts +2 average, but only committed 15 fouls -1 average. Utah was 4/20 from deep for 20%, not a season low but not great nonetheless. That's about it for the negative. Utah played a great game coming off that loss.

What an impressive game. Even with Delon going 2/7 from the field he still finished with 15 efficiency points. As for Loveridge he was everywhere. 4/7 from the field 10 rebounds, that gets it done. Then there is Taylor. Every week I think he's going to come back to Earth and every week he impresses me, easily the most underrated player in the conference. 6/9 from the field all three's. 6 assists and only 1 turnover. Color me impressed.

The bad...Utah committed 24 personal fouls, easily the highest for the season. Averaging 16.5 fouls per game. This translated to Colorado going 22/36 from the free throw line...both season highs for a Utah opponent. Utah opponents have been averaging 11/17 from the line. Colorado only created 9 turnovers, they actually played a really good game efficiently....until you see their shooting. Utah had only 3 offensive rebounds (tied a season low, UNLV) but a lot of that had to do with Utah shooting 58% from the field. Lastly, Utah only took 45 shots, 6 under their average but still scored 79, 5 over their average.

The good...there was a lot of good. USC only made 13 shots (season low), Colorado made 14 (second lowest). Utah defense is hot right now. 27/96 28% over the last two game from the field. 2/21 from deep 9.5%. On the other side Utah was on fire from the field. In the last two games Utah is 51/99 51.5% and 17/44 from deep. The 13 made behind the arc tonight was a season high. Utah also had a season high in defensive rebounds (33) +8 off average. Utah was +15 in assists and +48% from behind the arc. The +72 efficiency was the 5th highest this season and the second time in the past two games Utah was +70 in efficiency. FYI Utah was -16 vs UCLA. Utah averages +38.9 efficiency for the season and +18.1 in points. Utah has beaten 12 of their 22 games by 20 or more points...leads the nation.

5 DNP's is telling me that Coach K is narrowing it down to 8-9 main players. Kuzma has been slowing getting less and less time every game. I've heard that it's because he doesn't understand their defensive movements. Sad because the guy has all the offensive talent in the world.

The good...not a lot of big numbers to stand out vs Stanford because it was an average 15+ win for Utah, most of the numbers were in line with their season averages...which is a very good thing. Utah shot 83.3% from the line 20/24. Since the USC awful 50% free throw game Utah has been shooting 76.6% 144/188 from the line. If that was the constant for the season Utah would be ranked #7 in the country in free throw percentage. The 20 made free throws was the first time since Arizona State Utah made over 20. Averaging 15.7 for the season made. Utah was +6 on assists 14-8 and Utah held their opponent under 10 assists for the third straight game. The 3 Stanford steals was 3 under what Utah was giving up.

The bad....again, not much to get upset about. If I had to choose something it was going 5/15 from deep for 33.3% which was 7% under their average. Stanford actually shot well from deep at 42.9% 6/14 but it wasn't enough. That's about it. Utah looked very good in the second half and put it away.

Jakob is back. 23 efficiency ties him for the 11th best performance by a Ute on the season. With that said Tyrone Wallace also scored a 23 and marked the third time this season a Ute opponent scored a 23 efficiency, all at the JMHC. Jabari Bird also ranked in the top 25 opponent scores with 18 for 9th best. In fact, those two really played great...bad news for Cal is the other 7 guys didn't do squat.

The good...Utah forced 26 fouls (averaging 20.3) for the 4th most for a Utah opponent. Utah also only allowed 3 steals for the second straight game. Cal was only 5/12 from the free throw line for 41.7% which is the 2nd worst for a Utah opponent, USC 40% 2/5. Utah had 7 blocks for the first time since game 5, averaging 4.9. The 7 Utah turnovers is second best on the season (3 Washington St). Utah was 72.4% from the free throw line at 21/29 both better than season averages of 16/23. Utah is now 69.4% on the season. Utah needs to make their next 11 free throws to reach 70% on the season. If Utah shoots 52% for the next 3 games they should reach 50%, right now at 49.7%. Utah took 54 shots for the 8 time in 24 games, averaging 51.1 shots per game.

The bad...Utah had a very low 18.5% of assists to shot attempted ratio. Only 3 times has Utah been worse (SDSt, BYU, Kansas and UNLV). Utah only had 3 steals, which probably led to the minimal foul shots from Cal. They also only shot 44.4% from the field, which was the first time Utah shot worse than 45% since the Arizona game. Cal actually shot the ball well vs Utah. The 26 makes tied a season high for a Utah opponent (Arizona) and the 45.6% from the field was the 4th best against Utah. Utah has allowed 68 rebounds in the past two games after they were allowing 27.8 a game in the previous 4.

This was a big one Utah had to win and they did. Tucker, Chapman and Olsen really provided a lift when Utah needed it. It's tough to get positive efficiency off average when on the road...more on that later.

The good....Utah only had 11 fouls. They played really solid defence. Oregon State was only 3/8 from the line at 37.5% which was a season low for a Utah opponent. That free throw defense was on point last night. The 37 points was also a season low for a Utah opponent. The Beavers also only shot 13.3% from deep, 2/15. Oregon State only played 7 guys last night and two (Payton and Duvivier) played all 40 minutes. Utah was right on their averages for rebounding and three pointers but low in free throws and field goals.

The bad....those lows were season lows. This game was very similar to the UCLA game from an opponents perspective. Utah has shot 6/9 from the line twice (OSU and UCLA). The 40 shot attempts was a season low for Utah (averaging 50.7). The 47 points was a season low, averaging 73.2. 2 steals tied a season low, only forced 4 fouls (season low, average 12.2) and Utah was -9 in turnovers, which probably kept Oregon State in the game. Utah was +8 on the defensive boards which was the main reason Utah began to pull away at the end.

Tough game but a great win. Bring on the Ducks!

In case this doesn't make sense here's the breakdown. Obviously the "Home" and "Road" columns are the players efficiency average score in those games. Like I said not one player has a better average on the road. The "Off Average" column is the percentage off of their season average. i.e. Delon Wright is averaging 19.9 efficiency and is -4 on the road, the % off his average is down 19.9% on the road. The players are ranked by this column. I listed the minutes per game to reflect how big of an impact it is.

As you can see Chapman and Wright stay the closest to their averages on the road, only a 20% decrease on the road. Loveridge and Tucker have the largest drop of players averaging over 20 minutes at 40% and 66% decreases on the road. The argument is there that they underperform on the road but it's also more apparent since they play more minutes.

Brandon Taylor was shut down. Give Oregon credit, they did exactly what they needed to to win. Delon Wright probably learned today that he needs to just take the game over. Several times Delon passed up on driving to the hoop and instead passed out to an open player. The unselfish play but in the end actually hurt the team.

The good...Oregon had 2 blocks, that was the only category that was deficient for a Ute opponent. The one shining stat and new record for the season was 29 three point attempts...not great when they only make 8. Utah did have 7 steals which was above their season average

The bad...The Utes...they were deficient in 10 categories. 58 points was 4th worst on the season. 19 shots made was 4th worst on the season. 14 turnovers was tied for 4th worst in the season. 36.5% shooting was 2nd worst on the season. 27.6% from three was 5th worst on the season. The 19.2% of assists to shots was 6th worst on the season. 59 efficiency was the 4th worst on the season. Oregon 79 points was the third most Utah has given up all year (Arizona 83 and UCLA 82). Oregon committed 13 fouls, 7 under the Utah average, the 2nd best for a Utah opponent. Bottom line is Utah didn't get the calls and didn't go to the line. Utah was 12/17 from the line just under their average but the big factor is they didn't force Oregon to adjust due to foul trouble. Brooks had 4 fouls as the only player in foul trouble. Utah has forced 14 foul outs this year in 26 games. 35 times in 26 games they had a player with 4 fouls, again, Utah didn't force the issue.

Utah still has a chance at a share of the conference regular season title and even a #1 seed...but they aren't in control any more.

9 players at 9 or better? If you've been following this stat a couple of years ago Utah would have been happy to have 2 guys reach double figures. Absolute domination tonight. It was nice to see Isaiah Wright and Ogbe...and Kuzma all up there towards the top. I was just calling out Ogbe for not doing anything recently and Isaiah Wright hadn't hardly played in the last 4 games. Isaiah reached his season high tonight with 12.

First the good...Obviously 11 blocks...10 in the first half. Utah made 31 shots tonight, 3rd best for the season. The 116 efficiency was the second highest this year (125 Riverside). Utah shot 63.3% from the field +14% off their average and 57.1% from deep +17% off average. The 11 blocks were a season high and the 0 blocks given up were a season low. Utah also had 8 steals and only 9 turnovers. ASU actually had an ok game, they just couldn't shoot. 14 turnovers isn't bad, especially vs Utah. ASU shot 28% 14/50 and 18.8% 3/16 from deep, marks the 5th time Utah held an opponent under 30%.

The bad...ASU and Oregon combined to shoot 25/31 from the line and 81%. Utah opponents have been averaging 64%, some of this goes to better teams shooting better but some comes to their opponents not being tired. Utah only attempted 14 three pointers, this coming off of 29 attempts vs Oregon, Utah did shoot 57% vs ASU. Utah only shot 65% from the line 13/20 and still needs to improve, although recently they've done better.

That's about it...Domination...do it again vs Arizona and the world will be perfect.

How to read a negative efficiency? Is 0 an "average" and the player is actually hurting the team when they are in negative territory?

I haven't really zeroed it down to the number but in a nutshell
+20 = All-American levels
10-20 = solid performance, didn't hurt the team
5-9 = depending on the amount of playing time giving good contribution (average)
0-4 = didn't help or hurt the team
negative = very bad performance.

As you can see, Tra Holder last night was 0/5 shooting giving him -5 points. Then he had 3 turnovers moving him to -8 points. His one positive was the assist that moved him back to -7 total. No rebounds, no steals, no blocks, he essentially did nothing but miss 5 shots and turn the ball over 3 times.

Sometimes a player can have a really nice game on paper but a horrible efficiency. Fred VanFleet for Wichita State had 13 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds vs Utah but he was 5/19 from the field and had 2 turnovers which dropped him to a efficiency score of only 3. Essentially he hurt his team by missing so many shots -14.

To answer your question anything below 5 is really not helping the team, but that's not always the case. A player can score well efficiently with limited minutes, most of what gets Kuzma higher totals is he doesn't turn the ball over and doesn't shoot a lot and he gets a lot of rebounds.

Give it up for Loveridge and Bachynski, they actually played really well last night, and Isaiah Wright...even though he dropped the ball on the 1 yard line and gave up an easy put back... more on that later. Arizona is that good. Efficiency speaking Utah did a great job of taking out players who did well against them in game 1. Stanley Johnson was not the same player and dropped his efficiency from 21 to 7 last night. TJ McConnell went from a 20 in Tucscon to a 9 last night. Brandon Ashley went from an 18 to an 8. The problem is Utah couldn't stop Tarczewski who went up from 6 to 16. Hollis-Jefferson went from an 8 to 13 and Gabe York went from -1 to 13. Utah stopped three guys but couldn't stop the other 3...they're just too much to handle.

The good....Dallin Bachynski was +13 from game 1 to last night and Delon was +10. Isaiah Wright stepped it up and played well since they completely shut down Brandon Taylor. Delon's 22 was the 17th best performance of the season for a Ute. Utah held Arizona to only 16.7% from deep 2/12 and only 3 steals. Arizona shot 33.3% 17/51 which typically is good enough for a win. Arizona still owns the best shooting performance vs Utah at 49.1% so this was a huge difference. Utah was 76.2% from the line 16/21 and they were +4 in assists. Those were the good things.

Now, the bad.... Rebounding. As defensive rebounding goes, so do the Utes. Utah was +7 on defensive boards vs allowing offensive boards. +7 is a terrible score, the only game worse was the -2 at Arizona. Utah averages +15 with this. In fact, no team should ever be negative in this category. Fundamentally the defense has the advantage on the defensive boards because they should already be in position. Utah has not won the offensive to defensive board category yet this season and typically loses by 11.7 rebounds per game. They were -16 vs Arizona (6th worst). The worst offensive to defensive rebounding game was -29 at UNLV. Utah was -16 free throw attempts for the game. Many people point to this category as the #1 reason Utah lost but they were -14 at Colorado and Utah won by 28 points, not always the case, even though the 26 fouls were a season high. Sure there were some bad calls but Utah lost on the defensive boards...mainly the free throw from York (yes I'm talking about you now Isaiah). That was a huge play. It put Arizona up 1 and took a lot of air out of Utah with 1:39 left. Utah went for a three :20 later and that was it, Utah never scored again. If York doesn't get the put back, Utah is up 1 and Arizona is playing from behind. Utah shot 30.9% 17/55 a season low. That is not going to win you games, especially when 5 of the misses were from point blank.

I agree with you. We are a 4. But I do think we get a 3 if we win out from here. That would add a top 10 win and a top 50. Plus, the committee always overreacts to conference tournaments.

I have a different system since I don't trust the RPI. To me, a good win is a win over a bubble team or better. A bad loss is a loss to a team that is outside of the bubble. It doesn't change much either way. The committee values strong wins much more than it values the absence of bad losses.

with as many as 5 games left to play before the NCAA's, there is just too much in play. I can see anywhere from a #2 to a #9.

- If Utah finishes 5-0 I suspect they would get a #3 seed (with help there's an outside chance at a #2). Let's be honest, if Utah faces AZ on a neutral court, they'll lose by 10-15 points.

- 0-3 and Utah's probably an #8 or #9 seed, I just can't envision Utah losing to UW. They seemed to have quit in Seattle.

- 4-1 with a loss in the championship game equates a #4.

My gut feeling is that this team does not lack character, just experience. It seems to me unlikely that they fall apart now. But I do think we'll probably end up a 4 unless a light goes on in their collective head and they tear through the rest of their schedule and toe conference tournament.

It's mostly because he scores so much, they are pretty even. Plus UCLA had the toughest schedule in the entire Pac12...he gets bonus points for that right? Losing to Kentucky by 40 points though is hardly salvageable.

Alford has had 7 20+ point games including a 28 6/11 from deep game early in the season.
Just because he went 0-10 vs Utah (by far his worst game) doesn't make him a bad player.
He's had double digit assists twice and a couple of 4 steal games. He's put up good numbers vs good teams.

This game could have quickly been over with 8 minutes left but J Love and Taylor bailed out a really sluggish team. Delon actually put up his second best performace of the year and best in Pac12 play. Previously had a 29 vs Washington State (previous Pac12 high). Delon has reached 30, 5 times. Poeltl and Chapman were dreadful. -17.5 between the two of them didn't balance out Delons +12 of his average. Poeltl looked lost last night, give it to that Hawkinson kid (20th best opponent output), he really outplayed Jakob.

The good....Delon. How does a guy go 4/6 from the field and finish with 33 efficiency score? By going 8/8 from the line with 8 rebounds and 8 assists, 2 blocks and a steal (a very timely steal I might add). Utah made 10 threes, only the 5th time all year making double digit in threes. Utah was 79.2% 19/24 from the free throw line and it was necessary. Utah rebounded well and was +21 in defensive rebounding opportunities and only -10 on offensive (anything around minus ten or less is great) Utah actually played a fairly clean game with only 8 turnovers and 16 fouls...it's just they couldn't make a shot.

The bad....shooting. Utah shot 40.4% 19/47 from the field and for the second time this season (@Arizona) Utah made more shots from the outside than from 2. 10 three pointers made and only 9 two point shots made. That's crazy talk. 4 out of the last 5 games Utah has failed to reach 20 made shots (Arizona St 31). Before this stretch Utah failed to reach 20 made shots 2 times (@Arizona and @San Diego St...both losses). Utah only had 2 steals, 4 under their average. Give it to the Cougars, they played a great game and Utah just seemed out of it. Lucky for Utah Loveridge and Taylor woke up when they did. That long three from JLove was the game changer.

1 more game then it's on to the tournament!

You can obviously see a huge drop off of 2 point shots made in just the last 5 games, minus ASU.
Amazing that Arizona scored at least a 2 pointer on 43.6% of their possessions...that's efficient.

As you can see Utah actually scored on almost half their possessions last night, that's not bad.
Problem is Washington State didn't turn the ball over and they also scored on a high number of possessions.
That will always keep the game close.

Nigel Williams-Goss single handedly destroyed the Utes today. 28 efficiency smashed the season high for a Utah opponent. 11/18 from the field, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals. Great game. Wright, Poeltl and Loveridge showed up and the rest of the team took a nice scenic day off down at the Space Needle. Brandon Taylor "the views of the city from up there were amazing. I hope we won today." Dakarai Tucker was quoted "I went to go whale watching but fell asleep...how much did we win by?"

The good....Utah shot 52% 26/50 for the game and 32.7% of their possessions ended in a 2 point shot (avg 25.7% for season). That's about it.

The bad....Utah just didn't seem to care in this game. 23 rebounds vs a team missing their two big guys, 2nd lowest of the season. Averaging 34 rebounds per game. 2 steals for the 6th time this year. 5/19 from deep 26.3% was awful and 5th worst on the season. Utah gave up 77 points...the most all season. 82 efficiency allowed was second worst (@Arizona 83). 51% from the field was the first time all season an opponent shot over 50%. 57.1% from deep 8/14 was the highest all season, Kansas 6/11 54.5%. Washington scored on 55.4% of all possessions, Utah had been allowing 40.8% all year. Utah allowed a 3 point shot make on 13% of Washington possessions, been allowing 7.4%.

Utah slept through this game and deserved to lose.

Hopefully they were just saving some energy for the tournament.
