View Full Version : Season Efficiency 2017-2018

The Thrill

I'm sorry I'm a little behind but this will be the thread for this season which is now upon us.
Had some computer issues but all is good now.

I'll start with tonight's game Missouri and work my way back to get caught up, even though the first 2 games shouldn't really count.

For good measure...basketball efficiency is (Pts+Rebs+Asts+Blks+Stls) - (Turnovers +(Shots missed))

Welcome to the 2017-2018 season.

Donnie Tillman posted the first double-double of the season for the Utes, 13 points, 11 rebounds.
In the first two games Utah was allowing 9 steals per game and had 35 turnovers. Versus Missouri Utah allowed 2 steals and only 4 turnovers.
This was the first game all season Utah shot under 50% at 29/63 46%
Fouls were even at 20 but Utah gave up 12 more free throw attempts and 8 makes 10/13 vs 18/25.
Utah is only allowing 33.7% from the field, while shooting 49.2% as a team.
Utah had 15 more possessions than Missouri 71 to 56 due to the turnover difference.

I think if you asked most serious fans to name our 3 best players, the top 3, in some order, would be Collette, Barefield, and Bibbins. For us to beat the crap out of Mizzou and have none of those 3 finish in the top 4 for efficiency bodes extremely well for this team.

It's funny you say that. Tyler Rawson is actually the most well rounded player on the team by the numbers...I'll explain later.

It's funny you say that. Tyler Rawson is actually the most well rounded player on the team by the nubmers...I'll explain later.

I'm assuming that must be based on this year's numbers and can be attributed to a small sample size. I can't imagine last year's numbers would have reflected that.

Or it could be that the dude is an effing baller!

Here you go, Scratch and Applejack are both right. If you rank every player through three games, on the Utes, Tyler has the best rankings across the board
Granted the sample size isn't very large but as for right now he's the most balanced player

1st on the team in 3pt attempts, Defensive rebounds, total rebounds, blocks, Efficiency per game and assists to turnovers.
2nd on the team in shot attempts, 3pt makes, offensive rebounds, steals, 3pt %, FT%
3rd on the team in minutes, shots made, assists, points
4th on the team in free throw makes, free throw attempts
5th on the team in points per minute
7th on the team in turnovers per game (in the good way)
8th on the team in shooting %
9th on the team in fouls
His average rank for all 22 categories is 3.05

2nd is Donnie Tillman at 4.50
3rd is Sedrick Barefield at 4.91
4th is David Collette at 5.05
5th is Gabe Bealer at 5.09
6th is Jayce Johnson at 5.59
7th is Justin Bibbins at 5.64 (turnovers and fouls drop him)
8th is Chris Seeley at 6.86
9th is Parker VanDyke at 7.77
10th is Jakub Jokl at 8.50

Keep in mind the +/- is the difference in their season efficiency, not the +/- score when they're on the floor that many stats now provide.

Good tune up game. Still 16 turnovers. Utah shot 44.8% from deep, Bealer 6/8, Utah allowed 28.6% from MSVST 18/63.
Ho hum...bring on some real competition.

Yes Bibbins had a great game going 5/8 from deep, 36 minutes with only 2 turnovers and 4 assists.
But Rawson had the 6th best performance of the season and his 3rd in the top 6 performances...there's only been 4 games.

Rawson 9 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. If he hits 3 of the 5 shots he missed his efficiency shoots up to 33.
He is becoming the most consistent player on the team.

Bealer 24 is still the season high but there are now 8 20+ PER performances for Utah this year.

Utah was +8 on assists and +7% from the free throw line. Utah had 16 turnovers (averaging 13.8 per game for the season)...terrible
For the first time all year Utah had less blocks than their opponent.\

Utah picked up 37.9% of all offensive rebound opportunities (averaging 31.7% )

As you can see in the far right column, that's the individual players ranking for a Utah opponent for this season.
UNLV put up 4 of the top 6 performances in this game. The 35 PER for McCoy might go down as the season high against Utah...Until Trier and Ayton at least.

Tillman continues to be strong. I still have Rawson as the #1 player on Utah but Tillman is right behind him. Rawson's ability to shoot the 3 gives him the advantage right now.
Tillman got his second double/double of the season 14 pts, 11 rebounds.
I love watching Jayce play, he's a lanky and awkward guy but he loves to rebound. His offensive game is still week. The travelling he was called on is a simple footworking tweak. He pivoted on the same foot but he switched from his toes to his heel, refs like to call that one. It doesn't feel like a travel but it is. If he can stay on his toes the up and under will be there. The announcers likened his game to Kevin McHale, I like that comparison. If he can learn to run on his toes, he's very flat footed and that's why he appears awkward, then he could be an NBA guy.

Utah was -16 in rebounds, only the second time they've been outrebounded all season. -5 on assists was the first time their opponent had more assists. The Utes were also -10 from the field and -15% in shots. Shooting 35% for the game will do that. Only 2/20 at 10% from deep...yikes!.

This was the highest possession game of year at 139 combined but only the third highest score at 143. This game had the lowest attempts from deep at 36 combined, Utah games average 46 attempts. A lot of that is UNLV, they only attempted 16 and made 5. Didn't matter since they were 26/46 at 56.5% from inside the arc.

Last year I was tracking efficiency per minute, the magic number was 1. If Utah gets over 1 they win, if they get under 1 they lose.
Below are the season results so far.

7-0 center Brandon McCoy is the real deal. Averaging 20 and 12 while playing just 23 MPG. Five guys averaging double figures and size for miles.

David Collette was obviously the guy EW couldn't stop. 11/12 from the field?
EW is a streaky team, if they get hot they can beat a lot of teams, if they aren't hitting they will lose easily. Last night was the latter.
5/27 from deep 18.5% is a bad night. Utah owned every category last night except steals, -4 and possessions -14.
That game saw 53 three point attempts, third time that's happened this season. Utah is 3-0 in those games.
The only game Utah lost there were only 36 attempts. Key, make them shoot from deep and make threes on your end. Sounds simple.

Utah has only allowed 13 double digit efficiency scores all season, 3 came against EW.
On the other hand Utah has scored 26 double digit efficiency games, 4 came against EW.

Next game is vs Hawaii- 179th in FG%, 347th in 3pt %, 316th in scoring, 122nd in rebounding.
Utah is 108th in FG%, 241st in 3pt %, 60th in scoring, 93rd in rebounding.

First off, it felt like Tyler had a bad game...still had a 16 player efficiency rating. 1/5 from the field, 0/3 from deep...ho hum. But 9 rebounds, 5 assists, only 2 turnovers, 2 steals, 2 blocks. The dude is a stat sheet stuffer.
The announcers made a comment that Rawson is a true triple double threat. Can't say that about a lot of guys but he just does everything. I still have him as the #1 rated player on the team.

2nd, guard play has to improve. PVD needs to get out of this slump. 10/33 on the season only 4/22 from deep. We can't have a key shooter going 18.2% from deep. It will never open up the inside.
Bealer has been consistent from 3 shooting 57.1% at 16/28 and that's been the best part of the season other than Tillman.

Barefield is up and down. Bad vs UNLV, great vs E Washington then bad vs Hawai'i. Hopefully that means he'll be great at Butler.

Collette has only had 2 sup 10 PER games (Missouri and UNLV) The only bad thing about that is those are the best 2 teams Utah has played so far. Will he show up vs Butler?

Tillman continues to impress. The game seems to have already slowed down for him. He reacts before the play happens, that's a great sign for a freshman. He almost got his 3rd double-double of the season last night but unlike Rawson he lacks that's third level to get a triple double. Only 4 assists on the season. He's 54.2% from the field, and tied for first at the line at 85.7% 24/28. If Tillman can turn into a dangerous passer he could jump to the NBA before his senior season.

Utah has only been in one close game (less than 10 pt difference) all season Ole Miss. I hope they can hang with Butler. I see that one as a close one Butler -2. If Collette and Barefield decide to show up I think Utah can pull off the win.

Go Utes!

Season stats:

9 players averaging 10+ minutes per game, but Caldwell didn't get in at all in the last game.

Barefield leading the team in minutes, but Rawson and Bibbins are right there with him.

3 players in double digit scoring, with two more at 9.9 and 9.7. That's really balanced.

Jayce gets a rebound every other minute.

Tillman and Rawson lead the team with 6.9 rpg.

Bibbins with 4.3 apg and 1.7 tpg. Barefield is the only guard with an assist-to-turnover ratio lower than 1 (3.3 to 3.7).

The team is 33% from outside. 78% from the line.

Of regular minute guys, only Barefield and PVD are shooting below 40% from the field (36% and 30%, respectively).

3-point FG% (with at least 10 attempts):

Bealer 57%
Connor 40%
Bibbins 38%
Rawson 34%
Barefield 21%
Caldwell 20%
PVD 18%

Layups are hard. Utah shot 42.4%. 35% in the loss to UNLV.
They are 6-0 shooting over 43% 0-2 shooting under 43%
Utah is 6-0 when they hold their opponent under 80. 0-2 when opponents score over 80
Same goes for assists/turnovers 6-0 when opponent is under 1. 0-2 when over 1.
In 2 losses the opponent efficiency per minute is 1.78
In 6 wins the opponent efficiency per minute is 0.91
Utah has only been under 1 EPM once (UNLV). 1.11 vs Butler 2nd lowest

Season low in free throw attempts and makes 9/11 (avg 15.4/19.6)
26 rebounds was the first time Utah had less than 30 rebounds. Avg 37.5
Utah shot better from deep by 3.5% vs Butler but were -12.2% from the field overall.

Collette once again disappeared vs superior talent. I'm starting to think he's playing up a level.

At this point, Tillman and maybe Bibbins are the only Pac12 level players on this team. Maybe Rawson.
That's sad since Tillman and Bibbins weren't on the team last year.

Rawson FG% is dropping off and his fouls are high.
If Tillman can get a handle on his turnovers, 1.5 per game, and improve his assists, he'll run away with this.

I'm waiting for Pac-12 play before I agree on Rawson. He was always great against poor competition.

PVD and Barefield have both had a real rough start.

Rawson is a good basketball player. High IQ, good shooter. He just isn't a P12 athlete. He'd be great in the MWC or the WCC.

For a guy who went from American Fark --> SLCC --> Utah he always seems to compete. His hustle and IQ could get him a nice career overseas, ala Jordan Loveridge and Alex Jensen.

First off, I had a feeling Collette would show up. Old team, Mtn West team, easy prediction. Now bring it again big man.
Bibbins was awesome. 3/5 from deep, 7 assists, 4 rebounds. His 23 is the third highest for a Ute this season.
It was also nice to see PVD get some confidence. 3/4 from deep he's now 13/37 from three 26.9%

Tillman had a fall back to Earth game which drops him now to third overall on the team (Rawson #1, Bibbins #2)
Not sure if he was feeling well or the foul trouble just never got him in a groove but he was a non-factor.

Koby McEwen had been averaging 12.4 pts with 2 20pt games and a season low of 9 (three times). Utah completely took him out. He fouled out with 0 points.
Bealer and Tillman had poor games but it was nice to see other players step up in their absence.

This game was perfectly average for Utah.
An average game for Utah is 78-68 in the score, this was 77-67
Utah averages 19 fouls, this game was 20
Utah averages 15 assists, had 15
Utah was great behind the charity stripe, 86.4% was the season high 19/22
Only 2 offensive rebounds but a lot of that had to do with shooting 51%
Utah gave up 12 offensive rebounds to the Aggies, that and 13 more attempts from the field kept the Aggies in this. Aggies were +19 on possessions. -3 on turnovers.

Utah has only been out-blocked once all year (Mississippi -3) they were +5 vs Utah State
Utah has only been out-assisted once all year (UNLV -5) they were +4 vs Utah State

Bring on that other blue team.

Lost in the ugliness of this game was Rawson's near triple double. 15 pts, 10 rebounds 8 assists.
The loss of Tillman was the difference. BYU fans would like to tell you that they were missing Dalton Nixon but that comparison just isn't the same.
Tillman is averaging 10.9 points but in games he played over 20 minutes he's averaging 18.2 pts and 8 assists. Huge loss.
Not to mention his perimeter defense which obviously was poor.

Elijah Bryant, never heard of him until last night, played all 40 minutes, 5/7 from deep and 9 rebounds. I would have to believe Tillman would've had an impact on him defensively.
But that's the way the cookie crumbles. Bryant had a great game and Utah lost. Bibbins appeared to be forcing it a lot, possibly had a personal vendetta vs BYU from the WCC days.

Rawson's 25 is just behind Collette's 29 PER vs Eastern Washington. Gabe Bealer had his 2nd best game of the season and should've been more of a key to the offense IMO vs BYU. He owned that baseline.

Perimeter defense was the difference. -27.3% difference from deep, 10/20 vs 5/22. Only UNLV has a team shot better than deep vs Utah this season.
Utah's 22.7% from deep was the 2nd lowest of the year, 10% vs UNLV
Fouls were even but Utah had 4 less attempts.
Utah has been out-rebounded for the 3rd straight game. Also, for the first time all year Utah didn't register a block, -5 in blocks.
Rebounding is all about heart, Utah is lacking an aggressiveness lately, one that BYU definitely had last night.

That was the slowest game of the season. 108 possessions, Utah games average 126 possessions.

In Utah wins they are +7.4 on rebounding, in Utah losses they are -8.7
In Utah wins they are +7.3 on assists, in Utah losses they are -2.3

Those are the biggest factors between wins and losses for Utah. Which tells me desire and offensive movement need to improve.

Can't win them all. Let's get Tillman and Seeley ready for Pac12 play and shoot for the stars.
This team isn't bad, they pass well and they defend at times. Perimeter D must improve, Tillman and Seeley help immensely with that.

Bring on the Demons of Northwestern State
315th in FG%
342nd in 3pt%

115th in rebounding.

Bibbins coming out party 8/14 from the field 7/10 from deep 6 assists, 3 steals only 1 turnover. FYI, best PER for the season for a Ute.
He's had good games this year. This was his 3rd 20+ PER game (Utah St and Ole Miss), great way to come back after his worst game vs BYU.

Rawson also had his best game of the year, back to back actually. For the guy I've been calling the best player on the team all year, that's nice to see.
8/12 from the field, 4/6 from deep, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks.

Rawson, Bibbins, Johnson and Barefield almost beat the entire NW team. For a game Utah was missing probably their 4 most athletic players that's nice to see.
Collette, Bealer, Seeley and Tillman. Don't forget, in the three games Seeley was averaging 8 PER.

Utah had 6 blocks, big difference from 0 vs BYU. 13 fouls was the lowest for the season. Utah is consistent at being bad.
In the last 7 games Utah has had (11, 13, 13, 11, 13, 13, 13) for turnovers. That's rather impressive.
Utah had 11 offensive boards, double digits for the 6th time this year. Avg 8.3 per game.
They reached 109 efficiency for a team, 4th time this year over 100.
Utah had a 34.9% assists to shots, 2nd highest for the year. Avg 26.9%
Another consistent stat, shots made last 5 games (25, 25, 24, 26, 26) avg 26.7 for season
The 36 shots from beyond was way over their average of 25.3 and a season high. Hadn't broken 30 before this game.

Utah held NWSt to 9 free throw makes, first time in single digits on the season. 9/11. 11 attempts also a season low. Average 13.5/19.3. 81.8% was season high for opponent, first time over 80%
NWSt did get 42 rebounds, only the second time Utah allowed 40+ rebounds (UNLV 46)
NWSt got off 71 (avg 59.9 for Utah opponent)
Utah was +17 on shots from deep, average is +3.9
Utah was +15 on assists, only other time that happened was MS Valley St.
147 possessions was way over the season average 127.7. NWSt liked to run.

Short story, great warmup game for Pac12.

Bring on the Ducks 10-3
Oregon is 67th in FG%, 89th in 3pt%, 13th in pts scored, 52nd in Rebounding.

The OOC is over and the PAC 12 season is just around the corner. With that in mind, I took a look at the other PAC schools and how they have been playing, and here are my picks. I really don't think we will win 12 games, but still.

@Oregon - L (Oregon just has our number and it is an L until it isn't)
@OSU - W (We will go 1-3 in the first 4, so this is our win)
Ariz. - L (Akot is averaging 2 pts. per game and is playing less and less - should have come to Utah)
ASU - L (ASU is crazy good)
@ UCLA - W (We will win 1 on this trip and it might as well be this one)
@ USC - L (Cheaters)
UW - W (they beat Kansas, but have played a bunch of lousy teams to close victories)
WSU - W (they're WSU)
@ ASU - L (this will get ugly)
@ Ariz - L ( team will compete and lose)
@ CU - W (CU is not very good)
Stanford - W (See CU)
Cal - W (See Stanford and CU)
@ UW - W (We usually play well in Seattle)
@WSU - W (We usually play well at WSU)
UCLA - W (sorry Bill)
USC - W ( why not)
CU - W (no doubt)

Hands down, Bibbins getting hot won this game. Something I haven't heard a lot about was the Utah defense frustrating the Ducks.
On several occasions I noticed Oregon players jawing with each other and telling them they did something wrong.
I hope this is the case going forward. The Utah defense is good, not great, but they play smart rotation D and there aren't many easy shots.
I heard K talk about this team. He had a heart to heart with them and said "none of you are good enough to win one on one at either end of the floor. You need each other, use them." or something to that effect

First off, Oregon had 0 steals and Utah had only 3 turnovers. Wow. That will win games. The two biggest games Utah has won this year (Missouri and Oregon) they have a combined 7 turnovers. Averaging 12.1 per game. Obviously huge. Utah was 10/27 from deep with is just barely above their average so I wouldn't say this was an amazing game from deep but Bibbins showed up when he needed to.
I barely remember Rawson playing and then the dude gets a 21 PER. 3/9 from the field, 1/5 from deep, but 9 rebounds and 7 assists with only 1 turnover. The guy is so important to this team.
Barefield +7.5 PER on his average was also huge. He's been bad on the road and vs Pac12 teams. I guess the tradeoff was Bealer disappeared.

Second point, Pritchard was -2 PER. 2/10 from the field. 0/5 from 3. 4 turnovers. FYI he's their leader. Averaging 15.6 and 4.4 assists. Avg PER is 15.9 so he was -17.9 for the game.

Utah was +20 on possessions. That's huge. They took +10 shots. +1 on offensive rebounds, and -8 on turnovers.
Crazy stat, both teams went 10/27 from deep and both teams had 5 blocks (Wooten had all 5)
14 turnovers was a season low for a Utah game. Average is 25.3 combined.
The teams combined for 18/24 from the line, both season lows for Utah game. Total of 29 fouls was the first time there were less than 30.
122 points was also a season low. 143.4 average.

This was a balanced game across the board (FG almost the same 41.3% to 41.1%, three was exactly the same, Utah was +4.2% from the line 8/11 vs 10/13.
The difference here was turnovers. Utah was -8 on turnovers and that won the game.

Next game, Oregon State. 59th in FG%, 314th in 3pt%, 168th in points, 196th in rebounding.
Former Ute commit Tres Tinkle is leading the team with 18.5 points, he also leads in rebounding at 6.9 and steals at 1.6.
Drew Eubanks is a load. 6'10" 250 pounds, he's reached double figures in 11 of 13 games. Season high 26 pts and 11 rebs vs Long Beach State last month. Had a 10/10 game vs Loyola Marymount.
The Beavers had won 6 in a row in December. A 1 pt loss to Kent State keeps them from being 10-3 and on an 8 game win streak.
Their toughest game of the season was a 5 pt loss to St. John's. They've only faced 2 top 100 teams and lost both (Wyoming)

First off, that is not a misprint. Oregon State was a much more efficient team and Utah didn't deserve to win that game...but they did.
Difference was simple, three point makes. Utah was +5. A couple of those become a 2 and it's overtime.
OSU was +8 on the offensive boards, +5 rebounding overall, +3 on steals, they shot 6% better from the field, 14% better from deep and 6% better from the line
OSU was +22 on possessions over Utah. They took +11 more shots

Utah allows 79.9 efficiency per team. They are 2-3 in games where the opponents score better than 80 on efficiency.
Utah averages 87.7 efficiency per team. They are 1-3 when they score under 80 on efficiency. Obviously 80 is the magic number....but not this game.

This was a game of brothers. Oregon State plays very similar to Utah, scrappy, good passing, pound the inside, team game. Montgomery basketball.
Tres Tinkle is their leader and was only 3/11 from the field but still led them in scoring with 14 and 17 PER.
Barefield dropped below 90% for free thows, now at 88.9%. Utah has 4 players over 80% from the line. (Barefield, Bibbins, Tillman and Caldwell) Utah was 81.3% for the game and needed all 13 makes. This was the 7th game Utah broke the 80% at the line. 6-1 record (Butler was the loss 9/11 attempts).

This sweep surprised a lot of people, it's a great start to the season...but the two toughest home games of the year are next. Winning on the road is what gets you into the dance.

Next up, #17 (and rising) Arizona
8th in FG%, 37th in 3pt %, 46th in points scored, 156th in rebounding.

JMHC better be full and ready to go.

First off, 132 efficiency score for a team? Keep in mind Utah had 126 vs Mississippi Valley State, a game Utah won by 40 and vs current 0-14 Delta Devils.
Utah gave up 123 vs UNLV and 115 vs BYU. 107 vs Butler...all losses.

Next, -23 on the boards, -14 on free throw attempts and -17 on possessions. Second chances and attacking the key won this game for Arizona.
Utah stayed in the game by hitting three's in the second half. +14 attempts and +8 makes. Otherwise, this is a 20+ blowout win for the Wildcats.
Arizona was 30/36 from the line, 83.3%, both season highs for Utah opponent.
Arizona was 4/12 from deep, season lows for UO
Utah only had 4 offensive rebounds for the second straight game. Season average is 7.7. The 23 rebounds was a season low, avg 34.6
Utah did have 8 steals, +3 over their average but was +6 over their average on fouls and the 23 fouls was a season high.
In Utah losses they foul more. +3.4 more fouls in Utah losses.

Here's a huge stat. In the percentage of shot attempts to assists, Utah averages 27.1% of all shot attempts getting an assist. They allow 18.5%
In losses for Utah that number drops to 21.8% but they allow 24.0% of all shots to come off an assist. The answer to that is simple...better teams.
In wins for Utah that number jumps to 29.3% and they only allow 16.4%.
Versus Arizona Utah actually scored high with a 30.5% 18 assists on 59 attempts and only allowed 25.0% (15 ast / 60 shot att)...Utah played well enough to win but the second chances killed them.

The 58 free throw attempts were a season high for a Utah game.
69 rebounds were right at the season average for a Utah game.
The 176 points scored were +31.2 over the average Utah game.
And the combined 204 efficiency was the first 200+ efficiency game this season. Avg 158.5
Utah is currently shooting the highest % of the season from deep.
Started at 25% and shot up to 36.7% then went as low as 31.7% after UNLV and has now climbed back up to 36.7%
Free throw shooting peaked at 79.3% after the Utah State game, currently at 78.2%
2pt shots peaked in game 1 at 66.7% and has gone straight down since. Currently at 52.7% (just 2pt not including 3pt)

The two bright spots in this game were the Utes held Allonzo Trier to 7 points, -14.3 under his average.
But Jackson-Cartwright who was averaging 7 pts, got 19 vs the Utes so they offset.

The other bright spot was Utah didn't give up. Down 17 I gave up, I thought they would. The crowd was great, Ayton was just better.

Side note, Emmanuel Akot should've been a Ute.

Bring on the Devils. Dammit they lost...they're going to be pissed on Sunday and the Devil hates Sundays. Tough game

ASU is 23rd in FG%, 42nd in 3pt%, 74th in Pts scored and 111th in Rebounding.

Heartbreaker but ASU is a solid team, not #4 but they are good.
The one bright side of this week is that Tra Holder and Allonzo Trier didn't kill the Utes....but Shannon Evans and Parker Jackson-Cartwright did.

Utah was 29/36 from the line, both season highs. 3rd straight game shooting over 80% from the line.
31 fouls by ASU was +10 for a Utah opponent.
For the 3rd straight game Utah got killed on possessions. -22 vs Oregon St, -17 vs Arizona and -18 vs Arizona State
This is all on the offensive boards. -8 vs OSU, -10 vs AZ and -7 vs ASU. Second chances.

Giving up 1/4 rebounds to the offense is where you want to be.
Below are the opponents offensive rebounding opportunity results, remember the goal is 25%
37.5% vs Oregon State
46.7% vs Arizona
32.3% vs Arizona State

For Utah on the offensive glass, again getting over 25% is key. Utah is at 24.4% for the season.
17.4% vs Oregon State
12.1% vs Arizona
14.3% vs Arizona State

What this means is Utah is getting beat on the boards.
For the 4th straight game (all Pac12) Utah has been out-rebounded.
-3 Oregon
-5 Oregon State
-23 Arizona
-4 Arizona State

Collette season avg 4.6 rebounds - avg 3.3 in the Pac12
Tillman season avg 6.3 rebounds - avg 6 in 1 Pac12 game
Seeley had 17 rebounds in 2 games - 0 since
Jayce Johnson 5.6 and Rawson 6.4 are the most consistent.

Utah is missing that rebounding monster. Kuzma averaged 9.3 last year. Just don't have that guy this year.
Jayce is a beast on the boards but he's such an offensive liability he can't be out there.

Utah will be fine, they didn't get blown out in either game. Arizona and Arizona State might be 1, 2 in the league this year.

Next up UCLA...78th in FG%, 84th in 3pt%, 26th in scoring, 17th in rebounding.

First off, welcome back Chris Seeley. 3/5 from the field, 7 rebounds in 19 minutes. I can't wait to see Seeley and Tillman at full strength.
Second, what is with Barefield on the road? Dude just disappears.

UCLA only had 8 turnovers. The 3rd time a team had less than 10 turnovers (E Washington and Oregon St)
UCLA only had 14 fouls. Is that Chris Hill's fault? Maybe
UCLA was +5 on steals. +5 on three pointers made. -5 on turnovers.
Utah was awful from deep, 7/26 at 26.9% is bad. Especially when UCLA goes 12/23 52.2%
Utah was 1/3 from the right wing. 0/4 from right corner. 2/5 from the top. 2/11 from the left side wing. 2/3 from left corner (both Bealer)
Utah did much better on the boards. Allowed 78.6% of Utah shots UCLA defensive rebounded (goal is 75%) and 29.6% of UCLA shots offensive rebounded (goal 25%)
This was a very low free throw game. Utah games average 30/39 combined. This game was 22/26, only 30 fouls (avg 38 for Utah game combined)
Only 2 blocks, both from Utah.
147 points was just over the average Utah game at 145.7
UCLA was +11 on possessions

Utah first 7 minutes of 1st half they were outscored 9-21
Utah first 5 minutes of 2nd half they were outscored 4-11
During that 12 minutes Utah was 13-32
The other 28 minutes Utah was even at 51-51
They must not let teams get out on them at the beginning of the halves.

Bring on the Trojans.
USC is 73rd in FG%, 49th in 3Pt%, 34th in scoring, 133rd in rebounding.
USC looks to be favored to win 77-72

Jayce Johnson coming out party. 5/5 from the field. 9 rebounds. 0 turnovers. Great game, great effort.
Tillman seems to be everywhere on the court. He is a big body. Can't wait for him to be at 100% physically and mentally.
PVD had a great game. 2/2 from deep and both shots were beautiful, in rhythm. That's the PVD we've been waiting for.

The rest of you...WTF?
Barefield literally disappears on the road, every single statistic is lower on the road for Sedrick
Field goals - 37.9% at home. 27.6% on the road
3pt % - 33.3% at home. 18.2% on the road
FT% - 92% at home. 88.9% on the road
Assists - 3.1 at home. 1.8 on the road
Points - 12.1 at home. 9.0 on the road
PER - 9.6 at home. 4.0 on the road
- What is his deal? Is it mental? It's not playing time, that's the only category that increases 28.7 min at home, 30.5 min on the road

USC did a great job on Rawson. They made him fight for everything on offense which left his dragging on defense.
He's another guy who disappears on the road. His worst 4 games were (@UCLA, @Oregon St, @Butler, @USC)
Field goals - 48.8% at home. 38.1% on the road
3pt % - 42.9% at home. 23.1% on the road
FT% - 81.8% at home. 66.7% on the road
Points - 12.3 at home. 7.3 on the road
PER - 18.4 at home. 11.7 on the road

These guys have to play better on the road.

Utah was -33 possessions vs USC. In fact, since the Oregon game Utah has been getting killed on possessions. This includes, turnovers, steals, offensive rebounds, shot attempts.
Utah didn't lose this game from deep, although Utah is 0-4 when they make less three pointers than their opponent. They were worse against UCLA -25.3% from deep. Only -6.6% worse vs USC.
They lost this game on simply possessions. -5 offensive rebounds, +10 turnovers, -18 shot attempts, -3 steals. Sloppy basketball, USC just out hustled them.

USC picked up 34.2% of their offensive rebounding opportunities. The goal is to not give up more than 25%. This is the 7th game in a row Utah allowed higher than 25%.
Utah on the other hand has done better on the offensive boards. 30.8% vs USC. 8 offensive boards on 26 missed shots. That's not bad, they just need to stop the other teams. Tillman will help.

I liked Seeley and his aggression. The little altercation he got into was fine, he was being aggressive. The Tillman dunk on Metu was big time. Those two showed why they're considered the most athletic guys on the team.
Seeley is 6/13 from the line this season. I know he wears glasses, maybe pick them up before you head to the line?

Bibbins leads the time in minutes played. He plays 82.9% of every game. Next closest is Rawson at 75%.
Collette is barely playing 53% of every game. That's foul trouble. He leads the team with 3.1 PF/Gm

The team leader right now is Bibbins. He leads in 8 of 22 categories (Minutes 33.2, 3pm/g 2.7, ast/g 4.8, stl/g 1.1, pts/g 13.9, PER/g 16.1, 3p% 47.4%, ast/to 2.38) - worst category is offensive rebounds per game 0.3
Rawson is 2nd
Collette is 3rd
Tillman is 4th
Barefield is 5th

The brutal start to the season is over. Washington and Washington St should be home wins. Utes need them.

What has happened to Sedrick Barefield? I almost forgot he was on the team.
Bibbins has been on fire lately. He's averaging 4.1 three point makes per game since Northwestern State. 8 attempts. 51.6%
His PER since BYU is 20.5 per game.
When your 5'8" point guard gets 10 rebounds and your 6'10" power forward has a "great game" with 5. SMH

Chris Hill, money well spent. +11 ft makes and +12 free throw attempts.
Utah held Washington to 6 assists on 65 shots. That's 9.2% a season low for Utah opponent. -7 on fouls.
Utah averages 27.4% on assists to shot attempts for the season. 25.0% vs Washington
Utah was +14.4% from deep. 7/27 for Utah - 2/18 for Washington
Possessions were closer to even for the first time in Pac12 play. Utah was -20 possessions per game since Oregon. -4 vs Washington
Utah was -4 on steals and -3 on blocks. Washington was more athletic, but Utah is a better team.
Utah games average 145 points, this game was 132 total. Only the third time under 135.
This was a terrible shooting game. 82 rebounds was the third time there were 80+ rebounds.
The combined 38% is only the 3rd time teams combined for worse than 40%.

Utah killed it on the offensive boards. 51.4% of all offensive rebound opportunities were had. Season high before was 37.9% (Ole Miss)
Utah had 18 offensive boards (season high) on 35 missed shots. If a team gets over 25% they have a higher probability of winning.
Sadly, Washington also had an above average offensive rebounding game. 42.5%. It's really the only thing that kept them in this game. That and steals.
Speaking of steals, what was up with Barefield just throwing the ball to Washington? SMFH

Bring on the Cougars. Utah can't afford a letdown. They need that Washington St game for confidence before they head to Arizona
Washington St
161st in FG% - 33rd in 3pt% - 215th in scoring - 215th in rebounding.

Barefield played with a chip on his shoulder, benching him worked.
PVD made the least out of his start.

My favorite stat. Assists to shot attempts. Utah got their 2nd highest for the year 34.9%. 22 assists 63 shots. (MSVST 36.4%)
Utah was +10 on assists and for the first time in a long time +8 on possessions. 2nd time in P12 play (Oregon +20)
For the season Utah averages -5.4 less possessions than their opponent.
Utah was -4 on turnovers, +4 on steals, +4 on blocks. All good things.

The 31 three point attempts was the 2nd time all year with 30+ three point attempts (ASU 36)
13 makes from deep tied the 2nd best for the season. MVST 13, Northwestern St 15
The Utes reached the 100 efficiency total for the 5th time this year. 1st in Pac12 play.
This was the 8th game a team has reached 100. 5 in Pac12.

There were only 26 fouls called (Utah 14 WAZZU 12)
Utah games average 37.7 fouls per game. Only the 3rd time all year under 30 fouls. (Oregon trip, both games)
The teams combined for 85% (season high combined) 17/20. Utah 9/10 WAZZU 8/10

Back to assists to shots. In Utah wins they are 29.4% of all shot attempts get an assist.
In Utah losses that number drops to 25%.
Assists drop from 16.8 in wins to 13.4 in losses
Only two categories improve in Utah losses . +0.5 more steals and +2.5 more personal fouls (not a good thing)
In Utah wins they rebound better. 37.9 rebounds per win. 27.6 rebounds per loss.

Obviously pass the ball and protect the glass and Utah wins. Easy enough?
The 26 PER from Rawson was the 5th best of the year. 8/10 FG, 6/7 from deep 6 rebounds
Bibbins reached double figures in assists for the first time all year. Currently averaging 4.5 assists (#1 on Utah)

Great win and confidence builder for next week. The Arizona trip. Don't be scared, they're both beatable.

I will not be providing a report on those games until next Sunday. 1 would be great, both would be better!
Taking the family to Disneyland for the week. I'll be the guy wearing Utah red standing in line for a chicken leg.

Go Utes

Next up...ASU, currently 3-4 and behind Utah in the standings.
ASU is 49th in FG%, 40th in 3pt%, 41st in scoring, 133rd in rebounding.

Utah shouldn't have won this game, but they did.
ASU played a better game overall but Utah shot a little bit better and that was the difference.
+4 on 3pt makes and +3.5% on shooting. Utah wins

Jayce Johnson, where have you been hiding that?
5/7 from the field. 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 5/8 from the line
Ties his season high PER at 21 (@USC). 15 pts was a season high, hopefully he can follow that up at Arizona (psst...he doesn't)
Arizona State was +14 on possessions, that kept them in the game. +6 on offensive rebounds also.
ASU rebounded well. 91.4% of all defensive rebound opportunities were collected.

Utah is 2-7 when the other team gets a better efficiency score (at Oregon St -17)
Utah had 19 assists on 62 shots 30.6% which was above their season average of 27.8%
Utah is now 1-0 in overtime games this season
The Utes average 9.3 three's made, had 14 vs ASU (2nd to NWSt of 15). 2nd game in a row with +30 attempts from deep. Maybe this trend will continue vs Arizona (psst...it doesn't)
Utah had 2 blocks and have registered a block in 19/20 games (@BYU 0)
Utah allowed 70+ shots for only the 2nd time this year (NWSt 71)
Utah is now holding opponents to 32.9% from deep, they haven't allowed over 34% for the season yet.

Bring on the Wildcats, I'm hoping for a close one maybe 1-2 points with a controversial call at the end on Tillman.
Arizona
8th in fg%, 30th in 3pt %, 34th in scoring, 195th in rebounding.

Well, Arizona is good. No doubt about that.
But this was there for the taking.
Utah had no business losing by 1, this had all the numbers to be an Arizona 15+ point win.
But Utah didn't give up and was +22 on possessions which kept them in the game.
Sad thing is Arizona only needed 67 possessions (season low for Utah opponent avg 90.1) and scored 47.4% of the time (avg is 35.0% )
This is a stat I haven't really touched on this year that I track. Percentage of outcomes per possession.

Utah allows 19.8% of all possessions to be a 2 point shot, Arizona was 28.3%
Utah allows 8.1% of all possessions to be a 3 point shot, Arizona was 14.9%
Turnovers hurt Arizona.
Utah creates a turnover on 13.6% of possessions, Arizona had 22.3% (first time over 20% for Utah opponent)
Sloppy Arizona offense, tough Utah defense gave Utah a shot.

Rustic killed Utah. 9/11 from the field, 3/3 from deep (he's 7'0" BTW) 7 boards, 2 blocks.
Arizona shot 64.4% for the game, and won by 1. +20% in field goals.
Utah was +9 on shot attempts but -18.1% on assists to shots. -6 on assists
Utah was +7 on turnovers, highest difference in a loss. Vs UNLV the Utes were +4
Utah was -7 on fouls, in the good way. Utah going 18/21 from the line helped a lot too.
Season FT% is now back above 77% (high was 79.3% after the Utah State 19/22 game)
Utah is knocking on the door of their season high from deep. Currently at 36.5%, season high 36.7% after the home Arizona game when they went 12/26.
Utah has only been positive on possessions twice in Pac12 play (At Oregon and at Arizona)
Utah was -5 on blocks, only the second time (BYU) they've allowed worse than 3 more blocks.

Utah opponents are now at 33.9% from deep on the season, the highest Utah has allowed all year (low 21.9% after Missouri went 5/25)
This was a heartbreaker but no moral trophies. Utah needed this win.

Next up, 1 game week at Colorado on Friday
Colorado is 173rd in shooting. 180th from three. 153rd in scoring and 65th in rebounding
Utah is 140th in shooting. 108th from three. 191st in scoring and 239th in rebounding.

First off, Parker Van Dyke played well. I thought his defense was good, he made some good passes and finally hit some open shots.
He has such a sweet stroke if his confidence builds that just adds one more threat.

Now, everybody else.
Collette only had 16 minutes and 0 fouls. He was a bad matchup on Bey. The freshman was just too fast for David.
FYI - Collette led the team in scoring with 8 points.

Utah ran small all night. Bealer, Rawson, Barefield, Bibbins, PVD and Johnson got a majority of the minutes.
The two teams combined for 42/108 shooting at 38.9%, 3rd worst of the season (NWSt 36.6%, Washington 38% )
Two players scored a 10 PER...that's just not going to win games. Top teams have 1-2 in the 20 PER score and at least 3 over 15.
This was actually a close game by the numbers across the board except for shooting. Utah was +6 on shot attempts and -2 on makes.
Shooting percentage was +8.0% for Colorado, 4th worst difference for Utah game. 0-4 in those games. Utah is 2-7 when they shoot worse than their opponent.
Bibbins is 4/20 in the last two games and 9/33 in the last 3. 1/11 from deep in the last 2 games. He's coming back to Earth.

Utah turnovers were ok, only +1.8 over average. Fouls were good at -2.4 off average.
Last two games Utah is 14/42 from deep 33% (season avg is 36.3% )
Utah could have drawn more fouls and picked up more offensive boards, that would've helped a lot.

Utah collected 9.8% of all offensive rebound opportunities and allowed Colorado to grab 78% of all defensive rebounds.
On the defensive boards Utah has done a great job the past two games. Only giving up 6 offensive rebounds (2 Arizona, 4 Colorado) season average is 9.9.
This was mostly because Arizona didn't miss but for the Colorado game Utah did a great job. Collecting 94% of all defensive rebounding opportunities.

Overall this was an ugly game. 39% shooting overall. 15 steals. Assist to shot was a combined 23% of all shots got an assist (actually not terrible, season avg is 23.7% ) but for Pac12 play the average is up around 26%.
Colorado went on a 12-0 run to end the 1st half and start the second half. Ballgame.

FYI - When your team leader for the game goes 2/8 that's a bad game.

Utah has a full week to prepare for Stanford and Cal is just terrible. Utah could go 3-1 over the next 4 games with a possible sweep...depending on which Washington team shows up.

Next up...Stanford.
Stanford is 91st in shooting %, 159th in 3pt %, 118th in scoring and 77th in rebounding.

I thought it would be a cool breakdown to see which factors play the most into having a high PER score.
See below

#1 Points
#2 Turnovers
#3 Rebounds and Minutes
#4 Steals
#5 Assists and blocks
#6 Free throw %
#7 Field goal %

With respect to turnovers, it's the act of getting a turnover not the lack of turnovers.
13% of the leaders in turnovers are amongst the leaders for PER. This is obviously a correlation to playing time.

I found it interesting that shooting percentage really doesn't have that big of an impact.
That just means if you miss shots and keep playing, the coaches have faith in your ability to keep shooting.

Just like any statistical category, quantity is key. Everybody knows that Michael Jordan leads the NBA in missed shots.

I wonder how the efficiency of Utah's opponents differs from their average when they play Utah.

Great bounceback win.
Utah scored an assist on 28.6% of all shot attempts. Anything over 27% is a great thing.
Stanford was +7 on rebounds but +6 on turnovers.
Utah was +6 on blocked shots and +4 on steals.
Utah was +11 on possessions. Opportunities turned into +9 shots made and a +15 point score.
Utah shooting % was +14.2% higher than Stanford.
The refs appeared to swallow the whistles but there were 37 fouls, right at the season average.

6 players were over their PER average tonight. PVD with the best performance improvement and his best game of the year.
12 PER was only the second time all season he broke 10+ (Ole Miss 10)
He did the little things. 50% shooting, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and even a block with 0 turnovers. Solid game.
You can see why he's getting the time over Caldwell.

Bibbins 23 PER was the 9th best performance of the season for a Ute.
Utah only had 5 turnovers for the third lowest of the season (Missouri 4, Oregon 3)
10 blocks was a season high (avg 3.7) and only time they've been 10+ for blocks. Johnson and Collette both with 3.
Utah allowed 2 steals (avg UO 6.2 steals)

Overall this was a great game for Utah. The ball moved, they were more aggressive and Utah won.
Can't ask for more than that.

Next up...California 8-17

And Utah played California.

Next game.

Utah shot 54.9% (season high)
47.1% of all shots had an assist (season high)
11 fouls (season low)
53.3% from the line 8/15 (season low)
Utah was +9 from three point makes (season high)
Utah was +17 on assists (season high)
Utah scored a 3 on 16.9% of possessions (season high)

Seriously, let's just move on.

PVD scored his second 10 point game of the season (Utah St) but his third double figure PER game (Stanford 12, Ole Miss 10)
Collette had his second best game of the year and his best road game. (E Washington 29 PER)
8/10 shots. 6/6 FT. 5 rebs. 0 turnovers 22 points
Rawson scored his 10th 20 PER game of the season.

Bibbins still leads the team across the board in combined categories.
Justin leads the team in 8 categories (Minutes, 3pm/g, 3pa/g, Ast, Stl, Pts, 3pt%, ast/to)
Here are the player rankings - Top 5
1. Justin Bibbins
2. Tyler Rawson
3. David Collette
4. Sedrick Barefield
5. Donnie Tillman

Utah has been dominating the possession stat lately. +13 possessions vs Washington.
Utah was +8 FTA and +8 FTM along with +10 on the boards
Utah was +8 on assists and -3 for turnovers. Great overall game.

Utah has been going backwards at the free throw line.
Season high was 79.3% for the year, after Utah State. Since then they're down 3.6% to 75.7%
Vs Washington they shot 77.3% from the line 17/22. First time they've had 20+ ft attempts since at Arizona

There are 4 key stats that are consistent in Utah wins (besides points)
1. Hold opponents under 25 shots made. Washington had 21
2. Get at least 32 rebounds as a team for Utah. Utah had 36 rebounds
3. Get 17 assists as a team for Utah. Utah had 18 assists
4. 12 turnovers. Stay under 12 and force more than 12. Washington 13 / Utah 10

Can't have a letdown versus Washington State. They just beat Colorado at in Pullman but the Buffs are terrible (1-6) on the road.
Washington St now has 2 home wins. Other game was 2-12 California.

Washington State is: RPI 174
206th in FG% - 70th in 3pt % - 273rd in scoring - 276th in Rebounding

First off, Utah went only 6 deep in this game. Barefield played 4 minutes. Caldwell had 6. Johnson was out. Seeley was a CD.
Bibbins played all 40 minutes

3 players have played all 26 games (Rawson, Bibbins and PVD).
The teams combined for 27 three point makes, season high for Utah game.
A lot of those came in desperation and give WAZZU credit, they hit them.
72 attempts from deep was also a season high, no other game had more than 60.
Only 1 block was registered and Utah scored 0 blocks for only the second time this year. (@BYU)
Utah was -11 on fouls, but -3 on steals. Washington St was +7 on offensive boards (this kept them in the game, second chance points)
Utah was +14% better from the field (this won the game).

This was a fast paced game. 151 possessions combined was +26 over the average Utah game. This was the first game Utah reached 80 possessions.
WAZZU shot 84.6% from the line 11/13 the third highest vs Utah this season.
Washington St scored a 3pt bucket on 21% of their possessions, Utah allows just under 12%. This also kept them in the game.

Utah has a great opportunity to take 2nd place in the Pac12 going into Vegas. Need some help from Colorado.
Utes need Colorado to sweep the LA schools or at least beat UCLA (UCLA has a win over Arizona) to help Utah
Utah has to go 3-0 to finish the season. A 7 game winning streak with wins over Washington on the road, USC and UCLA should help their tournament chances a lot.

UCLA 47 RPI
85th in shooting % - 64th in 3pt % - 45th in scoring - 30th in rebounds.

Collette and PVD turned in an excellent game.
Combined for 15/21 from the field 39 points, 10 rebounds, 46 PER
Don't forget about Bibbins. Turned in the 8th double double of the year. His 3rd of the year (Washington and Washington St)

Without Barefield and mostly without Johnson, Utah is now on a 5 game win streak.
For the second straight game Utah allowed 11 more shots, but made more than their opponent
+14% from the field vs Washington St and +10.3% vs UCLA
Utah was -10 on the offensive glass for the third time this year (Arizona, Utah St) mostly because they shot 52.7%
During the 5 game win streak Utah has shot over 50% in 4/5 games. Only 8 games all year they've shot over 50%. 2 in the first 2 games.
Utah had 10 turnovers, 2 under their average. Only 12.6% of their possessions were a turnover. Season avg is 19.7%
Utah scored a 1.6 of assists to turnover vs UCLA. Season average is 1.31. Utah is 13-2 when they score better than 1.3 on assist/turnover (both losses Arizona)

The 162 combined points was the 2nd highest of the year (Game 1 Arizona 176)
Utah games average 126 possessions, the last two have averaged 152 and the UCLA game at 153 tied the season high (Washington)
The 24/28 combined from the charity stripe was a season high 85.7%

Two games left. Utah can sneak into 2nd place for the tournament if everything falls into place.

Next up....USC...35 RPI
61st in FG% -- 42nd in 3pt% -- 54th in scoring -- 207th in rebounding

Simple enough....ball didn't go in the hoop

-10.1% from the field.
-8% from deep

USC shot 51% to Utah 41%
USC shot 32% from three to Utahs 24%
That was the difference. Add in Utah's +4 turnovers and you have a 16 point loss

USC is long and athletic. That type of team really gets in the passing lanes well and disrupts all the interior movement Utah loves.
Think Oregon a couple years ago. Teams like that frustrate Utah because they get wide and long and the ball movement just stalls.
Then Utah is forced to launch a last second three, Utah was 5/21 from deep
Add that all together plus USC had 1 extra day of rest and Utah coming off an emotional win. Recipe for a loss.

Utah fought hard, just didn't have enough in the tank. Being down Barefield and Johnson was big but USC was down guys too. Still have to play.
Everything else was even or close across the board. Just scoring, kinda the most important stat.

This was by far Bibbins worst game of the year. He's only scored under 10 PER 6 times all year. 3 on the road all losses (at BYU, Arizona and Colorado). 1 was game 1 vs Prairie View. The other was UNLV (27 pt loss)
This is very much Justin Bibbins team. With Rawson having a rough night shooting, Utah just didn't have it.

Utah can still finish in the top 4 and get a Vegas BYE. Need to beat Colorado and have USC beat UCLA.

Up next....game 29, final game...Colorado (senior night)

First off, hope David gets better. That hurt my leg just looking at it.

The good news is guys like Tillman and Seeley stepped up and filled in for David when he went down.
One of the announcers said "Utah didn't have this gameplan going into the game and wouldn't have switched to it but it's working."
Seeley and Tillman were athletic enforcers out there and it was to Utah's advantage.

Colorado took +15 more shots in the game and had +24 possessions.
Utah was +13/+15 from the free throw line as Colorado was +9 on fouls.

Utah was +23.3% from deep shooting 40% for the game 8/20 and Utah was +5 makes from deep.
Colorado killed Utah on the glass, +10 offensive boards and +11 total rebounds. That's where they got the extra possessions.I
Their hustle kept them in the game. Utah just simply shot the ball better.

+3.3% from the field
+23.3% from deep
+13.3% from the line = Win

It was a pretty average game across the board except for blocks. 11 blocks combined marks the 5th time this year a Utah game had 10+ blocks. Bufs 5 Utes 6.

Big tournament coming up.
I'd say right now Utah is not in the big dance.
A win over Oregon gives them 33% chance
A win over USC gives them a 70% chance
A loss over Arizona gives them a 70% chance
A win over Arizona gives them a 100% chance (auto bid)

First off, great effort from Collette. He said he wasn't going to miss the game due to the ankle. Guy is a badass.
Utah needs more guys like Collette and Alex Jensen. Guys who will get their hands dirty and play through some pain.
Toughness, Krystkowiak kind of guys. Guys like Mawien, Zamora, Daniels and Reyes who can't take the heat are fine to leave.
Before you jump all over me and say Mawien had a nice year at Kansas State, I am fully aware.
Reyes also had a good year at Pepperdine last year, I understand.

Guys like Bibbins, Rawson and Collette are Utah type players, Krystkowiak type players. Accepting that makes transfers much easier.

As for this game. Oregon owned the second chances and the glass. Ballgame.
+9 on rebounds. +10 on shot attempts. +18 on possessions. -3 on turnovers...and the efficiency score was still a tie.
It was there for Utah, they lost it.

In 11 losses Utah was -78 rebounds. 1-10 where they won the rebounding war.
In 19 wins Utah was +33 rebounds. 9-10 where they won the rebounding war.
Yes, Utah was only 10-20 in rebounding wins on the season.

Offensive rebounding was much of the same
In 11 losses Utah was -31 offensive rebounds. 5-5-1 where they won the rebounding war.
In 19 wins Utah was -54 offensive rebounds. 6-12-1 where they won the rebounding war.
Yes, Utah was only 11-19 in offensive rebounding wins on the season.

Granted, as a team Utah shot 45.6% on the season to their opponents 41.7% so they had more offensive rebounding opportunities (+105 more to be exact) but Utah has to get those as defensive boards to get to that next level.

Look at the top Offensive rebounding teams (North Carolina, Cincinnati, Duke) and total rebounds (Xavier, Duke, Gonzaga, Michigan St.). Rebounding wins games.

I'll do a full season recap soon. Maybe after the NIT game(s).
It's been a fun season, this team overachieved (7th preseason in P12) and played their hearts out. I'm very proud of what they did this year.

U-Ute

I wonder how that looks if you calculate the % of missed shots that we got an offensive rebound on. It should be pretty easy to calculate if you already have the shot totals.

The Thrill
03-17-2018, 09:06 AM
I already calculate all of that. Goal is +25% of misses shots to gain an offensive rebound.
On the flip side the goal is +75% of opponent missed shots to gain a defensive rebound.

I've been reporting those numbers most of the season, I'll do a full report at sometime on that because I find it very interesting.

Tillman didn't fill up the stat sheet but he was efficient across the board.
3/4 from the field. 5/7 from the line. 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 0 turnovers. Good enough for a 15 PER.
If 5 or 6 guys did this every night, Utah would be a powerhouse in NCAA.

Bibbins continues to be the leader of this team. 5/11 shooting but 6 rebounds and 2 assists and a steal.

Utah was -13 on personal fouls and +12/+15 from the line. Ball game.
Utah was the aggressor and they used their size to overpower UC Davis into foul trouble.

I think the NIT three (1'8" further) didn't help the Utes. 7/28 was the 4th worst shooting percentage of the season.
Utah was +2 on makes from three but +11 in attempts. UC Davis was +4.4% better
The 128 points was the 5th lowest of the year (Colorado 118 total)

Utah collected 26.9% of offensive rebounding opportunities and 80% of defensive rebounding opportunities.
On the defensive boards this was the 5th best of the year (94.1% at Colorado 32 rebounds on 34 opportunities)
On the offensive board Utah had 26 missed shots and picked up 7 offensive boards.

Utah had a high ast/shot percentage 34% of all shots gained an assist. Goal is 28%. Vs UC Davis was the 5th best performance there.
Utah had 77 possessions (avg 63.2) due to 5 steals and +6 on rebounds.

It wasn't a great game but Utah won and now they play LSU on Monday in the 2nd round.
LSU is 18-14 - Lead by 5'11" Tremont Waters. They have a 6'11" guy who can shoot. 18/42 from deep 43% for the year Duop Reath. He's a Sudanese by way of Australia big man who spreads the floor.
LSU runs deep, usually 9 guys see double digits in playing time but in their 2OT first round win only 8 guys saw the floor. Reath had 26 pts and 11 boards. He outweighs Collette by 20 pounds but we might see Jayce on him.
FYI Reath first saw snow about 4 months ago, Utah could be strange for him.

LSU ranks 36th in FG%, 62nd best for turnovers. Both teams rebound about the same (meaning bad), LSU averages almost 8 steals per game (30th in the nation) so Utah must not turn the ball over.
They're a lot like USC with their pace and length. USC shoots better from three and rebounds better but LSU is better at defense and getting to the line.

LSU has 7 wins over tournament teams (Michigan, Houston, TAMU x2, Arkansas x2 and Missouri)
Utah has 3 wins over tournament teams (UCLA, Missouri and Arizona State)

Utah owned the glass and walked away with a victory
+11 total
+9 defensive boards
+2 offensive boards

LSU stayed in the game on defense, +6 steals and +1 blocks to keep the score under 30
Utah passing game has been a major improvement.

The refs let them play. Only 28 total fouls called. This was the 5th all year where a Utah game had under 30 fouls called (average is 36.1)
Utah shot 57.9% from the field, easily the best shooting for the year (previous 54.9% vs California)
This was the first game all year where Utah shot over 50% from three 14/27 51.9%
This was the only game all year where the teams combined for 50% or better shooting (59/116 combined), most of that was Utah.

Utah had 20 assists. Utah is now 5-0 when they get 20+ assists (Avg 15.6)
Utah has 36 assists in the NIT on 104 shot attempts which is 34.6%. A great game is 30% or higher. Utah on the season is 28.6% assists to shot attempts.

Utah scored on 46.4% of their possessions, 22% of the possessions were a 2pt shot, avg 24.8% and 16.2% of possessions were three's, avg 16.2%

Utah picked up 90.9% of defensive rebounding opportunities and 29.2% of offensive boards.
Remember 75% and 25% are the goals. Utah is 6-1 when they reach those numbers (Only loss was USC at JMHC) That game was lost on turnovers.

The turning point in this game was early. Barefield hit a 3 with 3:58 left in the 1st quarter putting Utah up by 13 (22-9) and they never looked back. LSU only scored one more basket the rest of the quarter and Utah led 30-11.

Next up St. Mary's
Utah looks to be an early 5 point underdog.
St. Mary's is good. Jock Landale is legit 5. 21 points 10 boards, 64% shooting. I watched him single handed beat BYU, twice. He's put up seven 30+ scoring games and pulled down 18+ rebound twice.
Utah has to rebound against them or they will get destroyed. Hermanson, Ford and Krebs are great shooters. Their point is Emmett Naar. Typical Australian point guard. Gritty, smart, 4 year player. The Gaels go about 7 deep.
Landale isn't an NBA guy, he's slow and not a stretch 5 that the NBA is moving to. He's old school, back to the basket post up guy who can pass to open shooters. He's not a black hole when he gets the ball and that's what makes St Mary's tough because you almost have to double him. He outweighs everybody on Utah by at least 25 pounds. Jayce will probably get the assignment just because of his size but it's going to be tough.

Utes depth won this game. The Gaels only went 5 deep and their bench had a total of 16 minutes and 4 points
The Utes bench went 58 minutes. They only had 9 points but a game this close every little bit counts.
The extra minutes gave invaluable experience to Johnson, Tillman and VanDyke. Granted, some of that was due to Collette having a back issue.
Overall, a team win.

Utah slowed down Landale but he still got his. 2/7 from the line was huge. Utah free throw defense comes up clutch.
Utah got killed on the offensive glass. 16 boards which was 47.1% of their opportunities. Remember 25% or lower is the goal for a defense.
That kept St Marys in the game, otherwise Utah really owned this game.
Utah defense held St Marys to 40.4% shooting and 31.8% from three. On the season they're 52% from the floor and 41% from deep.

Utah forced 15 turnovers which was huge (4th most this season for Utah opponent) and the Gaels only average 10 per game.
On the flip side Utah only had 8 turnovers (4th least this season for Utah game) and only 11.8% of possessions resulted in a turnover, season average is 18.5%

Utah was -14 on rebounds but +7 on turnovers, wash. It was the little things and Barefield getting hot that sealed the victory for Utah.

The turning point was 4:05 into overtime when Naar missed a jumper and Bealer grabbed the rebound. It was 54-54 and Sed came down and made a three. 57-54.
The dagger was 2:11 into overtime when Barefield hit a three to put Utah up 60-57. Utah finished the game on a 10-1 run to win by 9.

Next up.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 27-10 - Best win over Purdue 77-73. Lost to Villanova by 8
They have some bad losses on their resume, at Ohio by 5 at UTSA by 11.
They're 12-3 at home but 7-5 on the road and 4-2 neutral
Top 40 RPI. 3-2 vs tournament teams. (3 games vs Marshall 2-1)

Really a deep team that goes 8 deep with 3 seniors, 1 junior and 4 freshman. Young team.
They aren't big and they don't shoot great from three but their mid range game is really good.
They were only 5/13 from three vs OK State, Hollingsworth is their only threat from deep, 6'2" freshman PG
Their best passer is Darius Thompson 6'4" shooting guard who gets open, draws the D and then finds the open guy, usually Justin Johnson
Johnson is a 6'7" senior forward who is a lot like Rawson and does everything.
52% from the field, 42% from three (only 3 attempts per game), 9 rebounds a block, assist and a steal per game.
Rawson is a better passer but Johnson is a better rebounder.

Utes match up well vs the Hilltoppers, with Collette, because they aren't very big. But they're athletic and they move so Utah needs to have that zone on point.

Western Kentucky is an early 1pt favorite.

Go Utes!
