Tony Gwynn faced the Braves trio of Smoltz, Maddux and Glavine 270 times. He struck out a total of 3 times and hit .394. I went to a couple of Padres games recently. I was amazed that most of the hitters averages are between .190 and .240. Very few guys above .275. Run scoring, however does not seem to have suffered, but I base this solely on my observations and not any real statistics. Why are averages so low? Can it be attributed to the use of so many relief pitchers so the hitters rarely see the same pitcher more than twice in a game? Is it that the relievers all seem to throw in the mid-90's. If I stood in the box today and had someone throw a 90 mph pitch. I probably would not see the ball until the catcher threw it back to the pitcher.

There are a lot of factors. Better pitching, more aggressive use of bullpens (and much better arms in bullpens), the increased use of defensive shifts, and a change of approach at the plate (a greater emphasis on power and walks rather than high batting average). Also, the Padres offense has been really bad this year.

Wild Card tonight and tomorrow. I know I'm crazy, but, these are two of the best sporting events of the year. Just something about a winner takes all game (well, the next step anyway)......kinda like the feeling of game 7.

Astros don't play tonight. They pitched Verlander on short rest so that they could then throw Cole on normal rest tomorrow. They would have had either Verlander or Cole on full rest for game 5, so in this instance it made sense to go with Verlander in game 4. Going forward I would guess they go to a more traditional rotation. If they win, I would expect Verlander in games 2 and 6 and Cole in games 3 and 7.

I'm not sure the Yankees are beatable this year. Their lineup 1-9 is crazy good, and their pitching seems just good enough. Especially if Houston's two best starting pitchers aren't available till game 3

Oh, they're quite beatable by the Astros. Is I didn't care about the outcome, I'd bet on the Astros. TB, that's another story.

You gotta feel bad for any hometown fan that bought a World Series ticket this year. Hundreds of thousands of people paid hundreds or thousands of dollars each, hoping to witness their team win in person, and not one of them went home happy or even satisfied.
