This is always fun to talk about, and the image at the top of this subforum made me want to share my research about it. Feel free to post questions, comments, and construction updates.

The U is a fast growing university and the plans for its future are very ambitious. The 2008 campus master plan was designed by the prestigious architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) and it is available online in full, rigorous detail here: http://facilities.utah.edu/campus-planning/master-plan/2008-master-plan.php

Here is the map for the 2008 master plan from that link:

Here is the updated 2010 version (red = built, yellow = planned, striped = U/C in 2010):

Thanks. This is very interesting. I always thought that the biggest planning mistake that the U made was to fail to center the campus around President's circle. It is such an attractive part of campus, but it is now isolated in a small corner where no one goes unless they are a musician, physicist, or Sigma Chi.

I agree, I think it will be an asset to the university. I wonder if they'll allow tailgating or have gameday gatherings in the area when its complete.

I'm not sure about its status at this point. It was put on hold in 2009 because of the economy.

I hope they do. Limiting tailgating to a few lots is kind of a drag. If love to see tailgates set up all over campus under the trees and on the lawns. I know it would only work if people would be respectful of the campus and clean up after themselves, though. At the USC Utah game in 2011, it was great how people tailgated all over the campus and all around the stadium.

Those tennis courts... they burn!

I was working on the planning models for City Creek when the Universe Project was announced. Our bid department was excited and tried jumping on the project early. After it was "wait-listed" one of the guys at work told me along with the economy slumping at that point one worry was attracting vendors with City Creek competition so it would probably start up again after City Creek became established.

Exciting to see that the University is still planning it, I thought it was completely scrapped.

I think that is the parade ground at Fort Douglas. The golf course is being replace, in part, by the Medical Center's ambulatory care building. Construction is just getting started.

In undergrad I worked in the President's office with Art Smith. He once made that comment that during his tenure the golf course would always be there. I guess with new administration comes new objectives/goals.

This is a great thread. I haven't looked at it in awhile.

The campus is so different than it was when many of us were there. The biggest thing that happened while I was a student was the construction of the new rice Eccles - but it wasn't actually unveiled until after I graduated. The renovation of the library occurred a few years before that and it is still a beautiful library 16ish years later.

The Olympics and Village were the next huge changes and now these many projects are so exciting.

I'm glad that presidents circle is being left largely untouched and in its original setting. That will always be the best part of the academic campus to me.

The upgrade in the 90s when they went underneath the cement landing area in the back of the building and also towards the bookstore was a terrific upgrade. That's the upgrade I'm talking about.

Sorry to steal Hadrian's thunder in his own thread, but I wanted to post images of the new dorms that are designed to mimic Silicon Valley's ideals of "creating a space for innovation to flourish."

http://images.bwbx.io/cms/2014-07-15/0714_bschools_lassonde_b_970-630x420.jpg

Apparently it will be a mix of dorms/classroom space/3D printers/pool tables. It only houses 400 students, so my guess is that this is designed to attract top students interested in innovation.
