The Dodgers seem to be a team that is spending money just to spend money. It's crazy what to think about this ownership group and the moves they are making. Some seem so smart, and other just ridiculously dumb (like bidding 2 Billion when the next closest offer wasn't even at a billion yet, and then giving the parking revenue to the old owner, when parking revenue is just pure profit).

I'm not sure if they are the Steinbrenner's Yankee's or Isaiah's Knicks.

Yasiel Puig, this is a name to watch during spring for the boys in blue. I am extremely interested in his development. He is a huge talent with a huge bat. MPfunk will confirm, Andre Eithier can't hit lefties. He is what he is. Puig is the reason for all the trade talk of Andre during the off-season.

Either is certainly a valuable player, but he really is most valuable in a platoon. He crushes right handed pitching, but he can't hit lefties. If you get a guy to platoon with him that can hit lefties, that is a lights out combo.

I actually am kind of pulling for the Dodgers to be successful this year. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Give us San Jose you Giant bastards.

Puig is killing it this spring. It is going to be interesting to see how he is handled.

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/3901/yasiel-puig-continues-to-impress

Puig has been doing as much damage as any Dodger hitter this spring. He lined a three-run home run to left field off Cleveland Indians (http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/_/name/cle/cleveland-indians) pitcher Fernando Nieve (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/6485/fernando-nieve) in the Dodgers' 5-1 win Sunday. Puig is batting .421 with four extra-base hits, more than any Dodger hitter other than Luis Cruz (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/29250/luis-cruz).

This Grenke thing is starting to worry me a little bit. How many times do we need to see a butt load of money thrown at a pitcher during free agency, just to have them come into camp with arm troubles right after signing the mega-contract before the red flags start going up? I am glad there is to structural damage but consider me worried about him right now.

Question for IPU, if you're monitoring this thread: even though it was a 1-run game, do you think Greinke intentionally threw at Quentin - keep in mind that San Diego sent one at Kemp's head earlier in the game.

A Dodger fan is trying to tell me there's no way the Dodgers would intentionally throw at a guy, putting him on base with no outs in the 6th inning of a one-run game. I think protecting your batters goes beyond the score, and that they likely had enough confidence in their ability to get out of the inning without any damage even if they put Quentin on base.

Any other actual baseball players on the board have an opinion?

LA Ute
04-12-2013, 11:50 AM
I'm sure pitchers would love it.

Maybe pitchers should get a similar suspension for throwing at a batter. Lawyers would make money off the appeals process for both rules.

mpfunk
04-12-2013, 02:08 PM
I don't think Greinke's pitch was intentional. The circumstances are extremely suspect for an intentional hit. Carlos Quinton should get a very long suspension for his actions. This isn't hockey, fighting is not a part of the sport and it should be punished harshly.

mpfunk
04-12-2013, 02:19 PM
I have no idea whether or not it was intentional, but the circumstances mean nothing. In a 162 game season, these guys are willing to risk a run in an April game in order to make a macho point.

I agree that Quinton should get more than the 5 gave normal. Maybe 6-8 games.

The situation in the game give it context, especially it being a 3-2 count. Players know when to pick their spots and this is not a situation where a player would pick his spot.

Plus, Quinton gets hit a lot, it is part of his game to get hit by pitches. When you are purposefully trying to get hit, it seems pretty ridiculous to react like this.

Quentin was hit 17 times last year. He leans into pitches and never tries to get out of the way. He didn't lean into last nights pitch, he definitely didn't make an attempt to get out of the way. I hope Carlos gets a fastball to the face from Josh Beckett in the near future. It won't be next week. I have a hard time seeing Quentin playing at the Ravine during next weeks series.

I wasn't able to catch last nights game. Just saw the highlights. Looks like Big Mac was about to tear Matt Williams head off. I also don't like people throwing at Puig's and Greinke's head. Dirty Douche Backs!

All I know is that anything is better than League. League is just another horrible Ned Colletti signing.

Jansen has one heck of a fastball. The last two nights he has been overwhelming. I'm sorry I missed the fight but when I heard on the radio while driving home that Puig had been hit in the head I knew some fireworks were coming. Poor Greinke should wear body armor when he pitches.

Here's the video:

Puig looks pretty bent out of shape. Justifiably so. Even the pitch that hit Meinke was very close to his head.

It was way too shallow to tag. Would instant replay have reversed the tag call I wonder? In football, probably yes.

GarthUte
10-12-2013, 09:32 AM
Yes, the catcher needs to physically touch the runner with the glove and ball in order to get the out. Molina didn't get down low enough in order for the tag to be made. The ump blew that call. In his defense, it's a lot easier to see that the tag wasn't made in slow motion than in real time.

Agreed that it was a bad decision to send Ellis. You just don't risk an out in a close game on a shallow fly, particularly when the outfielder has a great arm.

Had there been replay review available, the call would have been reversed, IMO.

The Dodgers (http://www.utahby5.com/topic/sports/baseball/los-angeles-dodgers-ORSPT000015.topic)’ new network debuts next week, and I guess most of us will just have to take their word for it.

Unless you’re with Time Warner Cable, which will run the Dodgers’ new cable station, SportsNet LA. Currently, it doesn’t have a single deal with any other distributor.
The days of watching Dodgers’ games on free television are over. Last year’s games were still split between KCAL-TV Channel 9 and Prime Ticket. But beginning this year, it’s SportsNet LA or nothing.

If largely accurate historically, there’ is still no certainty everything will be resolved by Opening Day. Ask the Pac-12 Network or the Astros (http://www.utahby5.com/topic/sports/baseball/houston-astros-ORSPT000013.topic), whose network with the Rockets filed for bankruptcy protection (http://www.chron.com/default/article/Bankruptcy-ruling-keeps-CSN-Houston-afloat-amid-5205441.php)after 16 months because it could not reach agreement with DirecTV (http://www.utahby5.com/topic/economy-business-finance/media-industry/satellite-cable-service/directv-group-inc.-ORCRP015173.topic) and other major distributors.

Kershaw just tossed a No-Hitter. What an amazing game. He was straight filthy tonight. 15 k's. His curve ball couldn't be touched tonight.

Freaking Hanley Ramirez ruined his perfect game.

This won't be his last no-no. I'll bet he gets a perfect game too before he's done.

Well, we we learned one thing last night and were reminded of another. We learned that Alberto is less classy than we thought. We were reminded that Yasiel's baseball IQ still needs some work. Duh. That said, I'll predict: when both players' careers are over Puig will have better numbers than Pujols.

Albert Pujols tags up after Yasiel Puig's nonchalant catch, mocks him afterward (https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/albert-pujols-tags-up-on-yasiel-puig--mocks-him-afterward-065205979.html)

I'll take that bet. You have to remember Pujols was the undisputed best hitter in baseball for quite a while. He's nowhere near that player since he joined the Angels, but he amassed a pretty impressive base well before that.

I'll admit, it is an audacious bet. You're on. I hope I'm still living when Puig retires, however.

Re Pujols: When you are already destined for the Hall of Fame, cheap public mocking of another player is a bad idea. In my totally unbiased opinion, of course.

Puig is too much of a head case to bet on him long term. He is going to have to mature or could flame easily. BTW, i thought Pujols was very classy; Puig deserved it for disrespecting him. It also sounds like there was a bunch of other stuff between them. If you are Puig, you dont disrespect a hall of famer. he has a lot to learn.

It was one game, but it was some kinda game. It was the biggest shutout victory between the two teams in their long history.

This should have been a terrifying statistic: The Dodgers left 14 men on base. Not so bad when you’re scoring 17 runs and are 11-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

Nats out last LA in 14!

Checking in late in reaction to this game. I listened to almost the whole game and what fun it was. Got on the Amtrak in New Haven, CT in the second inning and just as I was getting off the train in Washington, it ended. Even a week and half later, still can't believe Clippard gave up that homer to Crawford and still can't believe LaRoche hit that homer off Jansen. Good thing I was not on the quiet car when all that happened, I would have been kicked off.

The Superbas better not wish for a match-up against the Nats this year. Hoo-boy!!

How about this. The Superbas had a pitcher get a homer. It is always fun to see a pitcher get a homer. Of course, Greinke is a good choice as a pitcher to get any kind of hit as he is one of the best hitting pitchers with his career .220 average and now 4 career homers and .607(!) career OPS.
