With the season right around the corner, but still too far away, I wanted to start this game to get some good discussion going and kill some time.

Here is how it works:

I begin by proposing two players. The two players can be anyone. Current player vs Current player. Current vs former, former v former, coach v coach, etc. etc. The more creative the better. The next person to reply quotes me and gives their choice. You can explain your reasoning if you wnat, but not required.

You then leave two players for the next person to choose between. On and on and on.

If you take exception to someones choice, feel free to discuss why!

I'll get us started so you can see how it works.

Jordan Wynn or Terrance Cain?

Seconded on Tucker. He was an all-conference caliber DB. Dunn as a WR was nowhere near Errol's equivalent.

Bateman could placekick off a tee, so my vote at kicker is for Sakoda. But Bateman punted for nearly a decade in the NFL, several with my Bills. So I'm splitting the vote there.

To hell with Helper. J.D. couldn't keep Jan from attending BYU. And Moa's games against AFA and Wyoming in 2003 were beyond epic. We haven't had a TE since Moa that was in his league, although Murphy could be that guy this year with a strong season.

As for the RBs, I'll take Marty pre-blown knee, Juan for consistency and reliability.

Gotta stick with blood. That Jan's dad allowed it is even more amazing.

Steve Fifita or Paul Soliai

People forget how big of a get Darnell was. I feel safe in saying his distinction of leading Utah to a win at BYU as a true freshman will never be equalled (although Jordan came close in 2009).

Fifi vs. Soli is as tough a comparison as I've seen in this thread. No one can deny Fifi's productivity, leadership and total bitch-slap of that BYU LB on his 5-yard touchdown run to cap the 2004 Holy War. But he had issues with leverage and if he got out of position for even a split second, could be dominated in the run game.

Soli totally flamed out at O-line, even though he was the biggest get, star-wise, of the Urban era, before he was rescued on the D-line and paired up with Kelly Talavou to form the Thing 1 and Thing 2 front four. Even then, Talavou had better production and Soli was booted from the team for his final game (the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl), for, as rumor has it, totally beating the shit out of Pauli Latu. But his production as a pro is undeniable, and his gift toward the new football facility is Exhibit A that there are certainly no hard feelings regarding how he left Utah.

Fifi was the better pass-rusher, but Soli might have eaten up and commanded more double-teams than any interior lineman ever at Utah. If I could have three years of the 2006 Soli, I think it's pretty clear. Since we didn't, it's not.

Putting Lance and Darnell together was kind of a joke on my part. I do recall how exciting Darnell was.

I'll now put up Lance and Golden Whetman. Which mistake was more bone-headed, Golden losing his helmet or Lance running out the clock against Air Force? I vote for the latter.

Darnell was a huge get. Very highly recruited. The only reason Utah even got him was because his head coach at St. Louis was the brother of Tommy Lee the current OC. Darnell turned down about half of the Pac 10 to come play at Utah. I really like Darnell. I feel bad for how it played out for him at Utah. Had he played 10 years later, IMO the kid would have been a star. Darnell was also a good enough basketball player and would have seen time on the court had Majerus let him come out for the team. He told him to focus on football and not waste his time on the hardwood.

Fifi was one of my favorites. I loved watching him play. He was so quick and hard to get a hold of. This gave O Lines fits trying to block the guy. He was like a little battering ram. Give the guy two more inches to his frame and he is still playing on Sunday. He was one of the quickest and most effective 5'10 315 pound men this world has ever seen.

I think I'm going to come up with a 10 Commandments of Utah Football. Ranking high among them should be this: Thou Shalt Not Make Comparisons of Any Former Utah Quarterbacking Great to Alex Smith. Smith finished fourth in unquestionably the deepest Heisman field ever (you may have read that defense of Alex in another publication). He's Utah's highest-finishing Heisman finalist and went No. 1 in the draft. I like Scott Mitchell, but the entirety of his career cannot touch Alex Smith's in any way shape or form.

How many games did Hays win that no other qb couldn't win. The only win I could think of that Hays was an integral factor was the bowl game. But how many other wins from that season could have been lost by subpar qb play. Pitt, WSU, Arizona come to mind. Rice would have lost 2 of those 3, for a 5-7 finish (and no bowl to win or lose)

I'll never confuse Lance Rice with the upper crust of Utah quarterbacking. But I'm either up in the night on his ability, or some are overstating his ineffectiveness. To me, there's a significant difference between Rice and Hays, or at least the 2001 version of Rice, who really cost us only one game (AFA), and it was a game in which we allowed a team missing 16 starters or reserves to score 38 points on us. If Cliff Russell doesn't fumble into the end zone vs. CSU, and we convert 3rd and 2 late against BYU, Rice is a QB of a 10-win conference championship team. If AFA happens differently at the end, we're a Top 10 team nationally, maybe even Top 5.

So going back to 2011, I think we split the Washington-ASU games. I think we show a lot better vs. Cal. We definitely beat Colorado. I'm saying 9 wins minimum with Hays, bowl included (we likely would've drawn a tougher opponent than Ga. Tech if we beat Colorado).
