This is an homage to one of my favorite threads on CUF/CS. We have many music buffs on the board, and I'd love to find out what you guys are jamming to at any given moment.

The last two days I've been streaming both the new Atoms for Peace (Thom Yorke supergroup) album Amok and Shout Out Louds on NPR's All Songs Considered site. There are some good songs on the Shout Out Louds, but not as solids as album's past.

At the moment, I'm listening to this:

In my opinion, Amok suffers from the same masturbatory excess as TKOL. Tons of great ideas get introduced, but are never given room to breath and make an impact. For example, here is an album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB0O106JORE) (one of my top 10 of 2012) that explores one just facet of Amok that Thom Yorke buries in the tedious fragility that permeates the record. Admittedly while my language is strong, I'd probably give it a 5 or 6 out of 10. Almost certainly crushed under expectation.

I just listened to it, I dig it, but my expectations were low. I figured it would be on par with his debut solo album, and thus far it seems to be. I think what I liked about Eraser and this album is that it seems to be more for what they want to do than commercial viability or even necessarily general likability (if that last part even makes sense). A friend said of Eraser that it seemed like a collection of songs that Yorke would show up to the rest of Radiohead to start working with and they'd go from there. This seems to be the same ilk. Now, if the aftermath for Radiohead is another In Rainbows quality album (their best in my humble opinion) then I'm all for Thom Yorke doing these types of exercises to entertain me between albums.

On another note TKOL is probably one of my least favorites (with the exception being that I love Lotus Flower), but it still beats out the truly awful Pablo Honey.

I guess now that the album is officially out I will say a little about Youth Lagoon's Wonderous Bughouse (I'll still hold off on Flaming Lips until The Terror officially drops). If you liked Tame Impala's Lonerism last year or found AnCo's Centipede Hz lacking, then WB may be an album you need to pick up. I think the lyricism is weak (often to the point of being completely uninteresting), but have troubling resisting this kind of swirling psych-pop. There's enough sonic experimentation here that you should feel challenged, but the scope is broad-enough to keep the album inviting and digestible.

Philip Glass

The one enduring memory I have of my post-mission sojourn with my parents is sitting in an opulent, Portuguese-built opera house listening to a Philip Glass piece as a muggy, Amazonian rain fell on the building's fading glory. After the concert, as everyone huddled in the grand foyer waiting for a break in the rain, I thought to myself, "I have toiled for two years in this majestic, dying part of the world and nothing captured that experience better than what I just heard."

Good hell, you guys were a lot more sophisticated on your missions than I was. I would have assumed that "Philip Glass" was a window repair shop or something ("Whenever you hear the crash, think of Philip's Paint and Glass..."). What a great moment and a great image, though. Where did you serve, Applejack (I mean, I'm assuming somewhere in Brazil)?

Wherever there is perceived chicness and highbrow entertainment to be exploited as a means to personal relevance, there will be hipsters...Concerts, Comic expos, model train museums...ok, I'm not quite as sure about that last one. There are only 3 shows that I imagine will be madhouses; Flaming Lips, Kid Cudi, and MGMT. Belle and Sebastian will probably bring out looky-loos since it's the opener, but probably wont be huge. I think Erykah Badu and the National will pull in respectable groups based on the previously stated highbrow perception. EotS will win for most tragically hip audience. Grizzly Bear and Youth Lagoon should be the most manageable.
Also, enjoy your secondhand smoking.

The National, Grizzly Bear/Youth Lagoon and Belle and Sebastian (in that order) would be my shows of choice. You're telling me the crowds won't be suffocating for these ones? I don't think I've been to one of these since they moved from Gallivan, but my aging memory tells me they were so packed that it was very difficult to really enjoy the show. I wasn't really that disappointed by these facts, although No. 9 was truly dispiriting (I would also be willing to bet that Streisand's numbers are strongly boosted by a flood of compilation/greatest hits/live albums that her competition simply cannot match). Most of them deal with artists whose heyday came in the era of vinyl, which was largely accessible to only adults and far less transportable than today's forms of digital media. If you put The Monkees and Zeppelin against each other and could somehow combine today's technology with musical tastes from the 1960s, the former would crush the latter. I should add that I would never put The Monkees within a million galaxies of Zep from a musical and talent standpoint.

Care to explain? Looking online I can only find pretty much universal agreement that the audio pegging (related to the Loudness Wars) is the reason the track lacked any dynamism.

The audio is pegged. But their assertion that it was the record company that did it for some sales reason is garbage.

Metallica does what they want, as does Rick Rubin (who has a history if mastering albums like that). They've discussed the way they mastered it, it wasn't the label (if that were the case the label never would have let St Anger be released)

Neither 'author' is a journalist, one is a former obscure punk singer that's on twitter and the other interviews bands.

It's quite obvious reading that whole #4 they have issues with Metallica, which is fine, but it's obvious they picked the album because of their issues, not because the industry mastered it that way.

DanielLaRusso
05-14-2013, 01:55 PM
Actually their only assertion in relation to Death Magnetic is that it's hard to perceive the changes in songs caused by peak limiting (there's no explicit claim that the industry at large or label did it). Since that song had a more dynamic mix released on the same day (which allowed fans to (justifiably?) judge Rubin's mixing...that he claims he literally phoned in) it makes a great test case for people not realizing the putzing of their music for a long time.
Admittedly, Cracked does like mocking Metallica, but I think this story happened to be the best analog to fit the specific clarification they made in the overall discussion of the Loudness Wars.

But the assertion is it is expressly done intentionally to sell more albums, which leads to this being a poor example.

Frankly I think it was just a way for a site, and two obscure 'writers' to take a shot at Metallica, not some big music revelation (their Napster crack pretty much sealed their fate on that one)

It seems it's a matter of interpretation of whether the paragraph before they talk about Metallica concludes their indictment of the industry (as I suggest) or if it's a lead in (as you suggest).
Though I must say some of your criticism seems like fanboy whinging. You wouldn't happen to be a Metallica fan, would you?

I'm supportive of any shots taken at Metallica and Lars Ulrich in the past, present, and future. I frankly thought that the article was overly nice by not pointing out that the album sucked no matter how it was mixed.

You're right, it's sublime. We listen to that album at home all the time but to my surprise it's not on my iTunes. I will fix that!

It's powerful to listen to the Choir while reading the lyrics:

Pilgrim's Hymn by Stephen Paulus

Even before we call on thy name
To ask thee, O Lord,
When we seek for the words to glorify thee,
Thou hearest our prayer;
Unceasing love, O unceasing love,
Surpassing all we know.
Glory to the father,
and to the Son,
And to the Holy Spirit.

Even with darkness sealing us in,
We breathe thy name,
And through all the days that follow so fast,
We trust in thee;
Endless thy grace, O endless thy grace,
Beyond all mortal dream.
Both now and forever,
And unto ages and ages,
Amen

That's actually quite misleading. Many of the current artist have the advantage of having a global marketing system that didn't even exist in most people's minds back in the 60's and 70's. If you could take the same social situation we faced in those two decades and combine it with the current technology in marketing (internet, Itunes, etc...), I think Led Zepplin and the Beetles would have blown everyone else away with numbers that would astound us, even by today's standard.

Listening to Trouble Will Find Me by The National. This is my first listen, but it's a little underwhelming. It may just be that I have such high expectations as The National has been one of my very most favoritest bands for the better part of the last decade. My initial thought is that the album is fine but could really use a couple of tracks with a little more punch and tempo (see Bloodbuzz Ohio) to put it on par with their previous albums. I definitely need to give this some more listens before I can really formulate a coherent opinion.

I've heard a lot of people are underwhelmed with the album. I didn't pick up and advance copy or a leak, so I haven't given it a spin yet...but based on what I'm hearing it sounds like it wont get too many. At this point I'd be more excited to see a recording of the symphony they arranged with Sufjan Stevens.

I only got it yesterday and have still only listened the one time. One review I had read said that it was the most "The National" album they've done. So far I think that's right. If you truly like The National, you'll like the album just fine, because it's more of the same mellow, moody stuff. Nothing wrong with it, but it fails to explore any new ground. No "wow" moments on the album. Again, that's all just based on one spin so my opinion could change as I listen a couple more times. In any case, like I said before I love The National so I will probably still listen and enjoy plenty of times but not nearly as many as Alligator and The Boxer, which both blew me away.

Callling all people who still consume new music. We are half-way through 2013, so what are your albums of the year so far?

For me, in no particular order:
Savages- Silence Yourself
Iceage- You're Nothing
My Bloody Valentine- mbv
Youth Lagoon- Wonderous Bughouse
and my "I thought I was gonna hate this, but I love it" of 2013 (so far) Kurt Vile- Walkin on a Pretty Daze

Historically, very few of my mid-year picks make it to my end of the year roundup...so having these posts around is always fun for me to look back on.

Awolnation- Sail (i like this song)
No Doubt- Bathwater (not my thing, but glad they didn't go with a more played song)
Kings of Leon- Fans (ditto)

Every once in awhile I listen to this history podcast. The last one I listened to was a fascinating short story about John Wilkes Booth's older brother Edwin. Apparently Edwin Booth was the most famous actor in America prior to the Ford Theatre Incident (which is why no one questioned why John Wilkes Booth was hanging around the theatre that night). After Lincoln's demise, the older Booth Brother Edwin was ostracized and his acting career was ruined.

Several years later in Jersey City, NJ, Edwin Booth rescued a man from death or at the very least serious injury, when the man lost his footing next to a moving train. The man he saved turned out to be Robert Lincoln, President Lincoln's son.

This is from the same guy who did "Thrift Shop," right? I'm a little cynical of the instant transition from fame seeker to political conscience. Makes it a little harder to believe in this as something more than a cash/Grammy grab (how can a song on this topic not win a Grammy?).

A little background for those who aren't familiar with Macklemore

This song is on the same album as Thrift Shop, so it wasn't a follow up to success

The album was funded and produced entirely by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. They did not have a record deal

Macklemore is very close to his uncle, who is gay. He and his partner are referenced in "Same Love" and that's one of the biggest reasons he wrote the song. Wasn't an attention grab, it's something he's been very passionate about for a long time

Also, Mary Lambert, the female singer on the song, is openly gay and helped write the chorus based on her experiences, especially being raised in a Christian church while being gay.

Agree. Not just a great song, but an important one. It's been a while since we saw anything socially conscious from the music world.

Diehard Ute
12-11-2013, 10:45 AM
The music world is putting out socially conscious stuff all the time. It's clearly there in folk and rock. But even pop music has a few of these every year. Lady GaGa's "Born This Way" has a similar political message to the Macklemore song. Socially conscious stuff sells .... sells what? Downloads? Advertising? I'm not sure what is being sold anymore, but it sells.

I would say the biggest difference in "Same Love" is Macklemore calls out his genre, hip hop, for their use of homophobic slurs etc

You hear lots of socially conscious stuff, you rarely hear someone trying to "make it" call out those who are his desired peers

Diehard Ute
12-11-2013, 10:58 AM
I dunno, calling out the establishment is a time honored way to the top in pop music. Isn't that what drove Lorde's "Royals" this year?

Anyway, it's a fine song. I would say that so far, Macklemore is known for two songs, and neither became popular for the musicianship. We'll see what he has to offer next.

I think there's a far stretch between the two myself, especially on the issue being called out.

As for Macklemore, I've had the album for white some time. I'm impressed with what he does. Certainly more impressive than most of pop.

Diehard Ute

That article would have been a lot shorter had he just gotten to this point quicker

I’m tempted to say it won’t be significant at all, because deep down I don’t think award shows (least of all the Grammys) ultimately shape how the history of art forms are remembered.

The Grammy's are universally accepted as the most farcical of the major "awards." (yeah, even the HFP's little kingdom of the Golden Globes is relevant by comparison) Hand-wringing over who does or doesn't win a Grammy is a needless waste.

When I am running the LDS Church, both "We Shall Overcome" and "This Land is Your Land" will be added to the hymnbook.

You just won my sustaining vote.

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

One of the handful of pieces that I can play on the piano. It's a great one because it's not too hard, but people think you have real chops.

Well, now you've ruined the effect you could have had on us at the First Annual UB5 Convention coming up this fall.

Just finished watching the first episode of the Foo Fighters "Sonic Highways" documentary on HBO

Cool show. They recorded each song for their new album in a different city, spending time there while they recorded. They talk to all kinds of people from that city, going over the musical history and music in general.

In the end they play the entire song from that city. It's a pretty cool concept, and for big Foo fans even cooler.

This may be the greatest cover ever of one of the greatest rock songs ever written. A the Kennedy Center tribute in 2012. Notice Robert Plant in tears.

I had never seen that before, loved it. Thanks for posting that, it is very damn cool. I'm not a Heart fan at all and initially didn't think I would like it. I was wrong.

Wow, I'm so glad this thread is a thing again! I agree with each of the three previous posts, very excited about the upcoming Band Of Horses and Okkervil River albums.

Two things I've been digging lately:

1. Pete Yorn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pCklO0gb3Y

2. Boy & Bear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEUY7dXsxrk

Both albums are top notch.

I'm not an audiophile, but I just won some Beats headphones. On the Apple site, they sell for $300, which is just crazy. Anyway, they are amazing. I've been listening to little laptop speakers or my Kindle's speakers for years. It feels like I'm seeing in color for the first time or something. Even playing a dumb little game on my tablet is different. Anyway, don't call me - I won't hear the phone ring.

Was this in celebration of Bob winning the Nobel prize for literature?

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/13/world/nobel-prize-literature/index.html

(CNN)The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."The Swedish Academy's permanent secretary, Sara Danius, said Dylan, 75, "is a great poet in the English-speaking tradition." She drew parallels between his work and that of ancient Greek poets.

Going out with the Mrs to see the G.O.A.T tonight. Bob Dylan at the cozy, 2,000 seat mission ballroom. Easily the greatest American artist of all time. Not sure who is in 2nd place.

For the Mt Rushmore of American artists, we have Bob representing music. Who represents visual art and literature? Who gets the 4th spot? An actor or filmmaker? An architect? A 2nd musician, author, or visual artist?

I'm headed to an organ concert this Thursday. I used to do my HW on Sunday nights. There was a 1 hour Grateful Dead hour on the radio and then a 1 hour program called "Pipe Dreams" with organ music. It was pretty good HW music.
