“True, we [lawyers] build no bridges. We raise no towers. We construct no engines. We paint no pictures - unless as amateurs for our own principal amusement. There is little of all that we do which the eye of man can see. But we smooth out difficulties; we relieve stress; we correct mistakes; we take up other men's burdens and by our efforts we make possible the peaceful life of men in a peaceful state.”

Scalley signs long term deal. I know some don't like it/believe it, but Scalley is absolutely the coach-in-waiting at Utah.

Total agreement. Much like Whittingham under Meyer, the continuity of the team culture will be hugely important to keep us towards the top of the PAC 12 (most years). Scalley has proven himself great recruiter, a good x's and o's coach, and a leader. Making the jump to the head job is never easy, and success isn't guaranteed, but I have good confidence in Morgan.
“To me there is no dishonor in being wrong and learning. There is dishonor in willful ignorance and there is dishonor in disrespect.” James Hatch, former Navy Seal and current Yale student.
<Raises hand>
There are worse situations to be in than to have Morgan Scalley waiting in the wings. That I don't like CIW agreements and giving alumni their first big break doesn't mean I'm opposed to Morgan. I'd rather try something new as we're fortunate enough to flex some P5 muscle in hiring coaches, let Morgan get some HC experience elsewhere, and then hire him back to Utah if an experiment away from the current coaching tree doesn't work.
There is risk either way. If you go away from him, you lose continuity. It's easy to say you can just go back to him if the experiment fails, but failed experiments come with consequences. And consequences can bury you for a decade in college football.
It's always tempting to grab the hot G5 coach, though, and no one knows more than we do about those guys paying off. In the end, the continuity, familiarity, and loyalty we get with Scalley will trump everything else from a risk/reward perspective.
Hire an assistant - plenty of examples of that working out well, plenty of it not working out.
Hire a rising G5 star, same thing.
Hire a famous alum, same thing.
Hire a former NFL coach, same thing.
If there was a proven formula that everyone could do, everyone would do it.

I think there's a reward in going away from the Kyle tree and learning that we shouldn't. There's zero risk involved there. If we went 5-7 three years running, it would be frustrating, but it wouldn't be devastating long term. The risk in going away from the Kyle tree would be never being able to scale it again, but between Scalley and Hill -- and to a lesser degree, Gary, Kalani, even Brian Johnson -- there are plenty of guys out there who know the Utah recipe quite well, and would come back in a heartbeat.
Who the Utes hire should depend on what is happening with the Program when Whit decides to step down. Are we continuing to compete to play in the PAC 12 Championship? Have we had a couple of 6-6 or 5-7 seasons? If the former, it makes sense to promote someone like Morgan and maintain the consistency. If the latter, it might be best to look outside the Program. I know Morgan and I think he will become an excellent HC. I also like Jay Hill and think he has shown the ability to run a program at Weber.
