If you don't have enough self control to go 24 hours without food, you're a pathetic human being. Choosing to do something against instinct is what sets us apart from animals. People who can't/won't fast and offer for the benefit of themselves and others are assholes. Fat people who don't fast at least once a month are especially despicable. Not only do fat people neglect an opportunity to better themselves by fasting, but they neglect an opportunity to give something they don't need to someone else who needs it.
Hunger is still a big issue worldwide. $20 a month offered to aid hunger could make the difference between life and death of a couple people per year. Within every community there are people who find themselves in need of assistance. Doesn't matter if it was or was not their fault, everyone has had moments in their life where they made bad decisions.
Fasting is a simple and important practice that far too many 'faithful members' puss out on doing. And the doubters, like SeattleUte...forget about it. I bet less than 1% of those people fast even though the benefits are clear as day. The most common excuse for not fasting is that their own health is too badly impacted by fasting. It's bullshit. Fasting has real tangible benefits. 99% of the time praying is a total waste of time. Same with temple work, God is not going to keep anyone out of heaven just because someone didn't do some ritual for them. Reading the same scriptures over and over is also for the most part a waste of time, no more beneficial than reading any other book of fiction. Fasting however has real tangible blessings. If you're not fasting once a month, you're an asshole, period.
