FBI and DOJ Announce Corruption Charges in College Basketball

I think this coming season will likely be Larry’s last. That’s 70% reality, 30% gut feeling, based on what I’ve seen and heard and read.

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
    --Antoine de Saint-Exupery

"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold."
    --Yeats

“True, we [lawyers] build no bridges. We raise no towers. We construct no engines. We paint no pictures - unless as amateurs for our own principal amusement. There is little of all that we do which the eye of man can see. But we smooth out difficulties; we relieve stress; we correct mistakes; we take up other men's burdens and by our efforts we make possible the peaceful life of men in a peaceful state.”

I think the hot recruiting will earn him another year unless the new kids look awful this season. And I think that would be the right thing to do. If he continues to recruit well, the team will become good. That's just how probability works. Some 4/5 stars will be duds, but if you get enough of them, you will get good players.

I agree, but the reality I am sadly saying we need to face is that the hot recruits don't stay. Another mass exodus will be his undoing.

I agree with your final sentence.

Larry needs Donny Daniels to be successful in two ways, among the other things he brings to the table. First, he needs to be the good cop to Larry's bad cop. He needs to hammer it home to kids that if you work hard, Larry will likely help you get the most out of your talent (Collette, Loveridge, Taylor, Tucker, Rawson, Barefield, Van Dyke, etc.). He also needs to help Larry understand how to do better himself at relating to modern players. I think that most of the transfers over time have been inevitable, but I wonder if an Isaiah Wright, Brekkott Chapman, or Jayce Johnson could have been retained if things were different.

As anyone who hasn't muted me knows, I generally feel like the problem for Larry has been not recruiting enough guys who can play at this level. That has really changed in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 classes, at least on paper.

Another mass exodus is inevitable, and is part of the business plan. You can't carry 7 freshmen for four years. You have to weed out half of them, more or less.

We've been crying "the sky is falling" over transfers for years, but we never lost anyone really important to the team's success. Then we lost two starters this offseason, and the sky really did fall.

Weeding out the lesser players is part of the mess that is modern college basketball. We only have a problem if we lose good players again.

I just don't think Larry is a bad cop, though. I don't think our transfers occurred because Larry yelled at players. They came mostly because people wanted playing time that wasn't warranted.

That's what makes the Jayce/Donnie transfers different and worrisome. Other than Daniels, who was unique case, those two are the first two to actually get a lot of PT and still transfer.

Yeah, I get that. I use that term more figuratively and im just hoping that DD can present another perspectvie that helps keep the kids here.

This depends on how you define "mass exodus". If you lose three of those guys after this year, but everyone else comes back, I dont know that I would call that a mass exodus.

Sure, but Jayce and Tillman weren’t weeded our.
