Welcome to the Maine event! Official Utah-Maine thread!

Maine starts the season at 322 in kenpom. All I want to see in this game is a full 40 minute effort. Beat them by more points than we beat CoI. Don't get hurt, maybe get Jayce some minutes, and be ready for that trip to Minnesota.

I've got my spreadsheet locked and loaded to start tracking all the league results and building resumes. I don't yet have a fix for how this new system will fundamentally change how the rankings are spit out, etc., but it sounds like the Quadrants are still the same.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Maine lost to Denver 63-50 last night. Their leading scorer had 10 points.

Per Jon Rothstein, Jayce Johnson is going to play tonight. It will be nice having him out there to get his feet wet a little (bad pun) before the big name against Minnesota.

Utes are unconscious from behind the arc 6 of 7 and 9 of 10 from the field

Timmy Buckets. Going to be a 4 year starter. Best freshman since "the gardner" donnie Tillman

    Well...that seemed pretty uninspiring.

I think I've been the most disappointed in Jones. When he signed I thought he'd be a vital cog on this team, but without being able to run the point, and with how small he is (smaller than I was expecting) I think he might have a tough time finding many minutes. Especially if Gach continues to step up.

Barefield led the team in minutes with 36. No surprise. Who was 2nd? Timmy Allen, with 35 minutes.

It's clear that Barefield, Topa, Johnson, Allen, and Tillman will all get significant minutes. I think Battin will continue to grab minutes off the bench at forward. The big question is still how the minutes shake out amongst the other guards: PVD, Hendrix, and Gach (I'm assuming Jones is on the outside looking in). I imagine only two of the three can get significant minutes. PVD got the most minutes last night, and he went 4-6 from the field (3-5 behind the line).

Other things from the box score:

Topa missed a double double by 1 point.

Allen with 6 assists. I guess that's something to keep an eye on.

Five TO's for Barefield. Ouch. But he had 8 assists as well.

    Five offensive rebounds for Jayce.

Tillman 6-8 from the field, 2-3 from 3 point range.

33% from outside as a team. That's about right.
I don't get Larry sometimes. We bring in our best recruiting class ever, and we can't trust the JUCO POY to get more than 5 minutes in relief of a guy who played 36 minutes against a sub-300 RPI team.

Did you watch Jones as he left the court for the substitution near the end of the 1st half. He was pouting like a 2 year old and failed to acknowledge his sub. The second half snub looked to me like a get your shit together and be part of this team or sit on the bench type of deal.

Timmy Allen is a baller. He's going to get a ton of minutes this year.

The race between Hendrix and Gach for who gets wing minutes will be fun to watch.

    Minutes last night:

    Sedrick 35
    PVD 20
    Both 18
    Vante 9
    CJ 5:

Even though PVD was 3-5 from 3, his D was terrible. He made #14 for Maine look like a Pac-12 level star--which he isn't; got beat backdoor 2 or 3 times & also could not stay in front of him.
IMO they take some of his minutes & give them to Vante & Both. Not sure how CJ finds minutes unless someone gets hurt.
And Naseem Gaskin who will probably never leave the bench would love even 5 minutes.

On the other hand--Timmy Allen 35 minutes --6 pts, 6 rebounds & 6 assists. he is a player.

It's just one game, but I feel like this team is going to be tougher than past squads...a lot of guys seem willing to go up and get the rebound, and I like that. Minnesota will be an interesting test.
