Utah was a 9 point favorite in this game, I really thought Utah would dominate on the inside.
Credit to Hawai'i, they used Purchase to be a three point threat and rendered Topalovic useless in this game.
Utah had to put the more mobile (it's a relative word) Johnson and Battin in over Topalovic and the Utah inside game went broke.

Utah had a season high 29 personal fouls, granted most of those were in the final 5 minutes but credit Hawai'i again, 89.3% from the line 25/28
On the flip side Utah was 20/29 at 69%. It's only 5 points but that would've been huge when they cut it to 7.
Hawai'i only had 8 turnovers 1 out of 8 possessions.
In both Utah losses they've allowed over 50% from the field. (51.8% Minnesota 52.8% Hawai'i)

Utah has to do a better job forcing turnovers. They have only had more steals vs their opponent against Maine +3

The turning point in this game was with 6:00 left in the first half. Tied at 23 Hawai'i went on a 20-8 run to finish the half which proved to be the difference in the ball game.
During that time this is what happened.

Utah allowed 9 points off of made three pointers and 4 points on two point buckets plus 3 free throws
    Utah had 3 turnovers
    Utah had 4 fouls
Utah went 6/8 from the foul line and had 1 basket and missed 3 shots
If it weren't for Hendrix 3/3 from the line it would've been a lot worse.

This is a young Utah team and they looked sloppy and lazy until they were in desperation mode. The run to end the game should've been Utah's intensity all game. They took a 23 point deficit to 7 but again, credit Hawai'i for hitting their free throws.

Below is an graph depicting the lead margin for Hawai'i

I couldn't watch this game so I'm going strictly off of numbers. Snow knocked out Dish

This game appeared to have been slowed down and a much better defensive output for the Utes.

14 turnovers was a season high for a Utah opponent.
19/44 from the field, both season lows.
    24 rebounds, season low
    2 steals allowed, season low,
    1 block tied season low.
    62 possessions, season low
2 turnovers every 9 possessions, season low

Interesting note, both Hawai'i and Grand Canyon went 9/24 from deep. The big difference was +6 turnovers and -9 made shots overall.
Utah held the Antelopes to 43.2% shooting. Season average allowed is 45%

For Utah they had a bunch of season lows as well, possessions, shots, rebounds but made a season high 86.4% from the line 19/22
That brings their season FT% up to 72% (weak)

Utah shot 50% from the field for only the second time this year. Under 49% and Utah is 0-2. Over 49% and they are 3-0

You can see below, Utah never trailed and it was only tied once at 0-0

Anybody know where Vante Hendrix is?

Northwestern made 10 three pointers and picked up 12 offensive rebounds.
Utah had no defense or hustle. Ball game.

The Wildcats also shot 47.6% from deep (Utah had been allowing 38% and 8 makes).
On the positive Northwestern had 12 assists and 15 turnovers.
Now onto Utah, Utah had 9 assists and 21 turnovers. 1/3 possessions was a turnover. 1/7 is the goal.
The assist to turnover was .43, counter that with 2.3 versus Miss Valley St (23 assists, 10 turnovers)

Worst game across the board for Utah. This team lacks leadership and it was evident today.
When Utah got down, nobody stood up. When Utah needed some fire, everybody looked at each other.

I miss Bibbins and Collette. Those guys had fire and energy, this team has none.

The one positive is Utah shot better from the line +16% (16/19 for Utah 15/22 for NW)

I found it interesting that despite the very slow start, the teams combined for the best shooting night of the season. 48.9% combine 45/92
This was the worst game of the year....until they go to Kentucky. Suddenly I'm not looking forward to that game.

You can see below, Utah gave up the lead with about 10 min in the first half and never recovered.
The second half was all Northwestern.

it appears K has found his 8-9 deep rotation.
This was the best defensive effort of the year.

32.2% from the field, 16.7% from deep and 39.9% effective shooting % for Tulsa, all season lows for Utah opponent
Tulsa was actually really efficient, they just couldn't shoot. 7 turnovers and 6 steals are both season bests for Utah opponent.

Tulsa attempted 69 shots, Utah opponents average 56.1 shots and 30 attempts from deep (season high), only making 5 (season low)
Tulsa only had 10 assists, season low for Utah opponent.

Utah on the other hand didn't play great but their shot defense won the game.
9 turnovers was a season low for Utah and 12 fouls was also a season low.
Utah struggled on the glass, even though JJ had a season high 12 rebounds, Utah only picked up 27.6% of offensive rebounding opportunities, need to be around 40%
They also only picked up 68.2% of the defensive boards, need to be above 80%. Meaning for every 10 opponents shots missed, Utah gets 8 rebounds.
Utah was out-rebounded by 7 rebounds, -9 offensive boards. They gave up way too many second chances.

Utah won this with defense and three point shooting. +20% from deep +5 makes. In a 5 point game, it's all the difference. Credit Both and Sed for going 7-15 combined from three.
It's really nice to see the game begin to slow down for Both, he's going to be a great player.

Charles Jones continues to be a disappointment, he is not Justin Bibbins.
In 1 game has CJJr been effective (Mississippi Valley). In the 7 games he's played he's had a negative efficiency in 4 games.
To his credit, he has 0 turnovers on the season, but only 3 assists...in 81 minutes

As you can see below, Utah never trailed. It's also obvious that the second have saw a lot more action than the first half.
Utah's biggest lead was 11 and the score was tied 2 times.
The turning point was a three point play by Timmy Allen with 5:38 to play. Tulsa was stuck on 47 points for 3 1/2 minutes where Utah took the lead to 11 and never looked back.

Utah seems to not have an identity.
They appear to be just going through the motions, running the plays as designed but not reacting to defensive adjustments.
They still lack a floor leader. They're young, they'll get there....maybe.

BYU played a great game, Utah couldn't stop Yoeli and he went for a 39 efficiency. 13/16 from the field. 4/5 from the line, 11 rebounds only 1 turnover.
BYU had a season high for a Utah opponent with 30 defensive rebounds, Utah just couldn't get a board. Utah had a season low 21.2% of offensive rebounding opportunities. That number needs to be high 30% or low 40s% to be winning games.
BYU only had 17 fouls which tied a season low for Utah opponent. They also shot 92.9% from the line 13/14, season high.

Utah on the other hand couldn't do anything right. 36.5% from the field was a season low, 19/52 shots. 11/17 from the line was a season low in makes and attempts.
The 7 offensive rebounds was a season low, average is just below 10.
I mentioned the 21.2% of offensive rebounding opportunities. That means out of the 33 shots Utah missed, they only got the rebound 7 times.
BYU on the other hand was at 33.3% of offensive rebound opportunities. 30 missed shots, 10 offensive rebounds.

Utah was behind in almost every category. They were better from deep +3 makes and +6 attempts and +4.2% better
Plus Utah was -3 on fouls so there is that.

This was the second straight Utah game with a season low for total points at 133 and the 3rd straight under 140. Utah is obviously slowing the game down.
4th straight game under 130 total possessions.
The 31 personal fouls was a season low combined for a Utah game.

This game changed at the start of the second half. BYU took a 4 point lead at half to 17 in just under 6 minutes. Utah didn't even score until the 14:07 mark in the 2nd half.
The 15 point difference at the end proved to be the difference.

    Utah vs BYU.JPG

It doesn't get easier. On the road to Rupp Arena next. UK is a 94% favorite to win. Probably UK -15 at tipoff.

    Good luck Utes!

I get that with a young team they need to focus on ball control so they slow it down, But they don’t have a Collette who they can throw it to at the end of the clock & he can create a shot. So they end up with a three, or Sedrick going 1 on everyone.
They do not see mismatches—several times Emery was guarding Timmy Allen, bu he did not get the ball.
Other than Gach when they run their motion/weave where the guards come all the way around & get the ball at the top of the key they do not increase in speed. Gach when he gets the ball accelerates and tries to turn the corner at the key & drive the lane. PVD & Sedrick are just killing time and nothing happens. East & west instead of north & south.

Battin & Gach are getting better. Allen & Tillman need to be more involved. Have them at the elbow on pick & roll, not Jayce or Novak or post them up. Those 4 plus Lahat are the future.

If Lahat recovers might be worth it for experience to play him this year.

Pretty much what we expected except for Both Gatch playing awesome and JJ actually holding his own.
Everybody else forgot to show up.

Kentucky had 9 season highs for a Utah opponent.

34 made shots - season average allowed is 26.1
12 three point makes - season average allowed is 8.2
6 turnovers - Utah typically forces 10.2 turnovers
6 steals - tied season high (BYU, Tulsa, MS Vall St) - third straight game
10 fouls - Utah usually forces 18.7 fouls
58.6% from the field - Utah usually holds teams to 46.3%
57.1% from deep - Utah usually keeps teams under 36% - first time all year over 50%
69% effective FG percentage - Typical game is 53.5%
1/9 turnovers per possession - Utah usually forces 1 in every 6 possessions.

Utah did hold Kentucky to some season lows
8/12 from the free throw line - the refs swallowed their whistles most of the game
16 defensive rebounds was a season low for Utah opponent and 23 rebounds
Utah only allowed 53.3% of defensive rebounding opportunities, that's actually an awesome number.

As for Utah they had season lows in the following:
6/8 from the free throw line - again the refs forgot their whistles
18 defensive rebounds, when Kentucky only missed 24 shots this number is bound to be low.
59 possessions. Utah averages 65.3 possessions

Utah didn't play terrible and had a pretty good game efficiently they just turned the ball over too much and couldn't stop UK from scoring.
Utah was +8 on rebounds and +8.3% from the free throw line but it didn't come into play.
This game saw a season low 25 fouls (average is 36.0 fouls)
And 14/20 combined from the free throw line
This was also the best shooting game of the season, combined 58/112 51.8% - first game over 50% combined
Only 121 possessions in this game, season average is 130.7
34 combined defensive rebounds was also a season low, that happens when you shoot over 50%

Utah just needs to play better. They were careless with the ball, made some bad decisions and the game got away from them.
One huge point was when the ball rotated and Sed drove right back into the defense and got a turnover and foul.
The announcers were quick to judge him for not swinging the ball, Sed should know better than that and that's why Utah is suffering. Too much iso ball.

Goch was a very pleasant surprise, the guy was on today. Even that buzzer beater on the shot clock from 26 feet was a good shot. He will be fun to watch over the next few years.

Thanks to the awful ESPN timing of games I just found out that Utah was up 10-2 early. When ESPN finally decided to show the game it was 19-30 for Kentucky

Nothing like a little competition with some Rattlesnakes to energize the team.

PVD was on fire. 6/8 from three, sadly that might be all he has in him all season.
Sedrick 4/4 from three?? This team is pretty good....versus the MEAC

1 downside, Florida A&M got 7 steals. New season high. Utah only had 11 turnovers but 7 were steals.
Utah opponents were averaging 2.3 steals per game before Tulsa. That number is now up to 4.8 due to 25 steals in 4 games (6.3 steals per game)
Tillman, Goch and Topalovic need to play more consistent basketball. They should've had bit numbers tonight.
    That's it for the bad.

Now the good. Florida A&M is a three point shooting team and Utah held them to 15 attempts (Utah opponents average 22 attempts)
3/4 from the free throw line - season lows
3 offensive rebounds / 14 defensive rebounds and 17 total rebounds, all season lows for Utah opponent.
Utah has been allowing over 10 offensive rebounds per game, they've only allowed 10 in the last two games. And that includes Kentucky who leads the nation
Utah has obviously focused on rebounding, Coach K loved to rebound. When/if Thioune gets back he will only make them stronger rebounders.
1 block was a season low for Utah opponent
59 efficiency tied the season low (Grand Canyon)
42.9% from the free throw line was a season low.

Utah was 22/29 from the free throw line, both season highs but still shy of the 85% season high (Grand Canyon 19/22)
12 fouls was a season low. Utah hasn't broken the 20 foul threshold since Grand Canyon (5 games) and 3 times under 15 fouls.
58.8% shooting was a season high 30/51 and effective FG% at 69.6% also a season high.
Utah was +21 on the boards and +8 on the offensive glass.
Utah actually attempted 4 less shots but made 3 more. +4/+10 from three. All keys to success.
Make more shots than your opponent and you should win. Crazy concept.

The 11 steals tied a season high combined. This was the 2nd straight game both teams combined to shoot over 50%. 57/106 for 53.8%
The 45% combined three point shooting was also a season high. 18/40

Utah has obviously improved the rebounding and slowed the game down. This was the 6th straight game under 130 possessions.
Utah games were averaging 137 possessions with a season high 145 vs MS Valley St....vs Florida A&M only 129 possessions.

Great rust remover tonight and another coming up vs Norther Arizona.

Utah never trailed and slowly pulled away as they should

Utah held Northern Arizona to the lowest efficiency output of the season for a Utah opponent 58
2nd straight game under 60. Yes they were both inferior opponents and Utah should've rolled them, but positive is positive.

I actually liked the tech from JJ early in the game, didn't know that guy had fire in him.
It gave Topalovic a chance to play more and this is where he's good. He played against NAZ often over the past 3 years.

Utah had a season low 7 turnovers and 1:9 turnover ratio per possession. Highest of the year so far.
Assist to turnover was also a season high, 2.57. Utah averages 1.19 asst/to so this is a very positive sign.
Only MsValley State did Utah reach the 2:1 asst:to mark.
Only 2 blocks in the entire game, unless you count that foul on JJ early in the game.

Other than that this was a pretty ho-hum game. Utah did what it needed to do, got some quality minutes from bench. Rested players.
Tough game next week vs Nevada. I hope Hunty is rocking.

The turning point was at the 17 min mark of the 2nd half. PVD made a three, followed by a Battin three and a Topalovic Dunk. That pushed the lead from 8 to 16 and Utah never looked back.

Caleb Martin looks like a solid NBA player and he proved it.
    6/16 from three. 11/23 overall.

Utah allowed 12 three point makes, highest since Kentucky.
Utah only forced 6 turnovers but allowed 7 steals. All three of those are a recipe for failure.

Utah actually rebounded well vs Nevada. 15 offensive rebounds but that also means they missed a lot of shots.
Only 1 steal for Utah and only 9 assists, tied a season low (Northwestern)

Utah made 7 less shots and took 8 less shots.
+11 on turnovers was the ball game.
Nevada shot 46% from three 3rd highest Utah has allowed all year

Both teams combined for 28 offensive rebounds which was a season high for a Utah game.
Not much else to talk about. Nevada just out played Utah.

You can see from the graph below, Utah was in it at halftime. The entire game the announcers kept saying "Nevada is a second half team", somebody should have told the Utes.

All I have to say is this is the team we've all been waiting for.
    Unselfish, aggressive, smart and fundamental.
Maybe these guys have finally figured out that none of them are Lebron James and this is a team game.

Tillman and Allen were both 1 shy of their season high efficiency
PVD and Barefield got their 3rd highest
Charles Jones got his 2nd highest efficiency.
Utah as a team got their 2nd highest efficiency score at 116 (Ms Valley 124, Florida AM 113)

Utah had a season high 22 free throws (tied FlaAM) and 7 steals (tied Maine)
the 53.3% shooting from three was by far a season high. Previous high 47.2% (MsValley)
76 possessions was a season high, average is 65.8.

No real negatives to take from this game. ASU made 11 three's which is a lot (8.5 avg allowed for Utah)
Utah did have +5 turnovers, mostly 1st half and -2 on blocks but that's about it. Utah only had 7 offensive rebounds but they only missed 28 shots.

The teams combined for 9 season highs for a Utah game
    59 shots made - avg 51.7
    27 three pointers made - avg 17.9
    58 three point attempts - avg 47.9
    13 steals - avg 8.5
    182 points - avg 149.2
    208 efficiency - avg 163.3
    46.6% from three - avg 37.4%
    87.3% defensive rebounding opportunitites - avg 77.3%
    151 possessions - avg 131.8

The bottom line is Utah won on the road in conference vs the team most people pick to win the league. Wow.

You can see below that at the 10 minute mark in the first half Utah was down 17 (9:40 to be exact)
The turning point was at 2 minutes in the first half with ASU up 11. ASU missed 5 shots, Utah countered with 2 layups and a three pointers to cut it to 4 at the half.
Then opened the 2nd half with a three. All the momentum swung to Utah and they held serve from then on.

Great win. Next up....Wildcats at noon.

I was just thinking this morning that Utah hadn't played an Overtime game yet this season. You're welcome.

First the bad. Utah missed 23 shots, Arizona got 22 defensive rebounds. 96% defensive rebounding opportunity. That's crazy.
Yes, Utah got 3 offensive rebounds in the books but they were mostly team rebounds.
Arizona also attempted 30 free throws, +12 off the average Utah allows.

Utah pulled down 26 rebounds, tying a season low (Northwestern). Everything else was a pretty average game for Utah.
74 total possessions marks the second game over 70, this game did go into overtime.
Utah was actually +4 on possessions over Arizona.

Arizona shot 50.9% for the game, only the 5th team to shoot over 50% vs Utah.
Utah as a team shot 56.6% for the game. Second game over 50% and 52.4% from three, also consecutive games
The Arizona trip Utah was 59/110 53.6% shooting. That's crazy.

Combined the teams shot 53.8%, tying a season high 57/106 (same as Florida A&M game)
The 10 offensive rebounds combined were a season low for Utah game.
Utah was 1:4 ratio of turnovers per possession. When Utah is 1:5 TOossessions or better they are 7-3. 0-4 when they don't

Utah lost their first game when getting 14 assists. 5-1 on the season.

You can see below Utah actually led for most of the game.

Washington is a solid, balanced team. 6/9 players had double figure efficiency and almost 7
They won't kill you with one guy, they hit you from all over the floor
Crisp went 5/13 from the floor 0/6 from inside the arc. 4 steals and 4 assists.

For the game they just outplayed Utah. 9 steals was a season high for a Utah opponent. Average is 5.3

Utah had 17 offensive rebounds (season high) but only shot 33% from the floor (season low)
20% from three 6/30 and 58% from the line 7/12. Effective shooting % for Utah was 38.3% (season low) average is 55%
Utah did get a season high 44 rebounds but mostly because they couldn't make a shot.
53 points was a season low for scoring for Utah (avg 74.1)

Utah was +8 on three point shots but -3 on makes, not a great recipe.
Overall Utah played a good game, ball just didn't go in the hoop.

The teams combined for 13 steals (tied season high at ASU) but shot a season low 37.6% 47/125 most of which was Utah. Washington shot 41.5% 27/65
The 20 made shots wasn't even a season low for Utah, 18 vs Northwestern and 19 vs BYU.

You can see below that Utah had the lead with just over 10 minutes in the first half, Tillman made a three to put Utah up 15-13 but it was all Washington after that.
Another slow start after halftime put Utah down 15 with 17:47 left 45-30 and that was it. Utah got it down to 5 points 47-42 with 13:00 left but ran out of gas.
They had their shots, and missed them

Next up...Washington State. Utah needs to win this game.

Washington State is really bad. When I had Utah going 1-17 in Pac12 play, this was the one win. Didn't fail.

I saw Washington St players pass balls off of their own feet, throw passes clear out of bounds and once they even talked a ref into taking out Timmy Allen.

Utah on the other hand played a great game. +35 points from the last game.

Washington State only made 5 shots from deep (season low for Utah opponent) and shot a season low 35.9%.
For the second game in a row Utah allowed 9 steals, that was the only negative for Utah.
Utah on the other hand had 11 steals +7 over their average and 5 blocks, double their average.
Utah was +13 on the defensive glass and 19% better from the field.
Washington State did have 75 possessions which tied the season high (ASU)
The 20 combined steals was double an average Utah game (9.6) but the 14 made three pointers combined tied a season low (NAZ, @Minn)

This was Both Gach second highest output (Kentucky 22 PER) and his 6th double digit PER. 14 pts was his third highest output.
Charles Jones also scored his second highest output (Miss Valley 13 PER) and as a good friend pointed out, Utah is now 2-0 when Charles Jones outscores Barefield.
Timmy Allen now has 10 double figure PER games (20 high FLAM)
Tillman played his worst game of the season 3/7 with 1 TO 0 assists 0 blocks 0 steals 4 rebounds, luckily they didn't need him.
Tillman still has the top two outputs of the season 27 PER vs Ms Valley St and 26 at ASU, more on that later.

You can see below Utah only trailed once, 2-0 :30 seconds into the game. Wazzu tied it at 11-11 with 12:04 in the first half and Utah took over from there.
The lead got as high as 30 at 62-32 with 13:19 left in the second half and Utah cruised to an 18 point win.

Great time to get some days off, another winnable home game before a winnable Bay Area trip.

    Go Utes!

    Current player rankings - Utah

    Attachment 2493

The image below is the current ranking for the top 9 players on the team and where they rank in each main category.
    Green = #1 Red = 8th or lower

i.e. Tillman is #1 on free throws made per game, defensive rebounds per game, rebounds per game and efficiency per game.

Interesting to note, Barefield has the most #1 spots with (9) but low in rebounds, turnovers, blocks, fouls and FG% making Tillman the better overall player by the numbers
Also interesting, as much flack as Jayce gets, he leads the team in 3 categories (offensive boards, blocks and shooting%)

Another interesting note, the top 9 players all rank #1 in at least 1 category.

You'll notice no Pac12 players until we get to 29 and 30th. Zion is just a man among boys.

    Pac12 Top 50.JPG

Interesting that Jayce jumps up to 21.3 PER when accounting for 40 minutes.
Josh Sharma appears to be deserved of more playing time.
Sharma is playing 16 minutes, shooting 64% 8 points 5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks
