    The Medical Research Breakthroughs Thread

I hope this will be an interesting and educational (often inspiring) thread. I hope our docs and medicine-related members will chime in frequently.

I'll start with this little story about a fascinating case in which physicians at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) injected an altered form of the HIV
virus into a girl dying from leukemia. The results are amazing.

We're kind of proud of this story because my firm represents CHOP. One of my partners in D.C. took this little girl and her parents to meet their senators and congressmen yesterday. He says she "is a delightful, active, strong girl and we had a blast. It’s a true miracle."

This might be grounds for hope that someday soon there won't be any more Millie Flamm cases. I'm sure her parents would love to see that day.

“True, we [lawyers] build no bridges. We raise no towers. We construct no engines. We paint no pictures - unless as amateurs for our own principal amusement. There is little of all that we do which the eye of man can see. But we smooth out difficulties; we relieve stress; we correct mistakes; we take up other men's burdens and by our efforts we make possible the peaceful life of men in a peaceful state.”
