Looking at the live video, I can see the escape slide and even a staircase on one side of the plane. Maybe some people got out. Rerports are that the plane cartwheeled and it looks like the top is burned through, so I am sure there were may lives lost. I hope I am wrong.

“True, we [lawyers] build no bridges. We raise no towers. We construct no engines. We paint no pictures - unless as amateurs for our own principal amusement. There is little of all that we do which the eye of man can see. But we smooth out difficulties; we relieve stress; we correct mistakes; we take up other men's burdens and by our efforts we make possible the peaceful life of men in a peaceful state.”

This is encouraging news:
Looks like they were able to get off before the fire.A passenger on the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 jet that crash-landed at San Francisco International Airport today said most of those aboard were unharmed.
In a brief phone interview with The Times, the passenger, who didn't want to give his name, said: "I just want their families to know. Most of the people seem OK and we're just letting the paramedics do their job."
The airport has been closed and it's unknown when it will reopen.

A miracle that only one person died.

Los Angeles Times | July 6, 2013 | 2:49 PM
South Korean Deputy Counsel General Hong Sung Wok said Asiana Airline officials told him one person was killed and 20 to 30 people were injured in a plane crash at San Francisco International Airport.
"We are very shocked," Sung Wok said, speaking with a Times reporter in the arrival area of the international terminal. "We have to take care of this sad situation. We will make all efforts to take care of these families. We also express our sorrows to the victims."
He said airline officials told him there were 299 people on the plane, possibly including crew members. He said he was told most people were safe.
